Activists push
for King probe
WASHINGTON (UPI) -
Three prominent civil rights
activists say two men now in
jail can testify Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. was assassinat
ed in a conspiracy and not
single-handedly by James Earl
Ray.
The Rev. Ralph Abernathy,
Dick Gregory and Georgia state
legislator Hosea Williams led a
small demonstration at the
White House Thursday to back
their telegraphed plea to
President Ford to reopen the
investigation of King’s 1968
death.
Attorney General Edward
Levi said Wednesday he had
ordered a review of the FBI
investigation of King’s assassi
nation to determine whether it
should be reopened.
Ford himself has suggested
an investigation of “new
developments” in the assassina
tion of President John Kennedy
as well an inquiry into the FBI
harassment of King.
The civil rights leaders, in
their telegram to Ford, said
any investigation should include
evidence from Robert Byron
Watson, who allegedly over
heard a plot to assassinate
King.
They also said a C.H.
Andrews, also known as R.L.
Warren, would be willing to
testify as to his alleged part in
the plot against King if he were
granted immunity from prose
cution.
They said Watson is in a
federal prison at Ashland, Ky.,
and Andrews is in the Mimico
Correctional Institute in
Gtoronto, Ont.
They gave no details of the
testimony either Andrews or
Watson could offer.
Turkey
blamed
in shooting
FORT WORTH, Tex. (UPI)
— Police said a man shot and
killed a friend because the
friend’s cat was eating his
Thanksgiving turkey.
Authorities said the unidenti
fied suspect, 39, would be
charged today with homocide.
Emory Pippin was shot at
least six times by a man who
apparently was invited to eat
Thanksgiving dinner with Pip
pin.
Investigators said the suspect
arrived at Pippin’s home while
Pippin was at a neighbor’s
residence for a few minutes.
When he found Pippin’s cat
eating the turkey, which had
been left unguarded on a
kitchen table, he went to the
neighbor’s home and shot
Pippin, police said. The man
returned to Pippin’s home and
was drinking a beer at-the
kitchen table when police
arrived.

Taiwan government
has younger faces
By EDWARD NEILAN
Copley News Service
TAIPEI - Without fanfare,
Premier Chiang Ching-kuo is
bringing some young faces
into the Taiwan government
apparatus, which had some
times been diagnosed as suf
fering from tired blood.
It is too early to character
ize the change as a wide
ranging “youth movement.”
But it is significant that more
and more persons who are
known more for their future
aspirations on Taiwan than
for their past performance on
the Chinese mainland are be
ing brought into the govern
ment structure.
The developing youth syn
drome is one more indication
that Chiang is putting his own
imprint on the administration
here that was run for so long
according to the style of his
late father, Chiang Kai-shek.
Many of the young names
are advanced degree holders
who completed at least part
of their studies in the United
States. It is not at all surpris-

probe
ATLANTA (UPI) - Rep.
Andrew Young, D-Ga., says a
Justice Department review of
the investigation of the assassi
nation of Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. could “put to rest”
unanswered questions in the
case.
Reached in Nairobi, Kenya,
Wednesday by WSB radio, King
said Attorney General Edward
Levi “made a good move” in
ordering a review of the case.
Young, who worked closely
with King during the civil
rights movement, is touring
Africa on a State Department
sponsored trip. He is being
accompanied by Mrs. Coretta
Scott King, the late civil rights
leader’s widow, and the King
children.
Levi Wednesday announced
he had assigned two top level
Justice Department officials to
review the investigation of
King’s death after the Senate
Select Committee on Intelli
gence revealed that the black
leader had been the target of
harassment by the FBI.

China’s dynamic society,
since the alternative — the
People’s Republic of China —
is really no option at all.
Among the many faces that
comprise the “new young

whom I renewed ac

first time during a recent
week on Taiwan:
— Dr. Frederick Chien,
vice minister of Foreign Af
fairs, is 40ish and immensely
poised as he operates at a
very high level in a foreign
service that has traditionally
honored age. I had known
Chien from the time he be
came chief of the Govern
ment Information Office
more than two years ago.
Some Kuomintang old-timers
around this town openly criti
cized the appointment of a
man so youthful as Chien to
the sensitive GIO post. But
the appointment —a personal
choice of Premier Chiang —
proved to be a good one for a
particularly difficult period
in the ROC’s history.
Chien said that a conversa
tion he had recently during a
golf round with visiting Mel
vin Laird — one of President
Gerald Ford’s close but unof
ficial political advisers — re
assured him that the future
for Washington-Taipei rela
tions may not be as bleak as
some have forecast.
— Dr. Wang Chi-wu, who
heads the international pro
grams division of the Nation
al Science Council, is a Co
lumbia University graduate
who is a study in perpetual
motion and extremely witty
vocabulary. When a group of
American sociologists asked
Wang if he thought Peking
would accept a study group
investigating behavioral
modification (brainwashing)
Wang said, “I told them they
must be out of their cotton
picking minds.”

the group’s proposal but
Wang welcomed the group to
Taiwan to study behavioral
modification attitudes con
nected with the important
area of family planning.
Wang, a boyish-appearing
executive who describes his
office as the “Department of
New Tricks,” has succeeded
in coaxing 1,000 Chinese
Ph.D.s to Taiwan from the
United States and elsewhere.
Many of them comprised a
part of the scientific “brain
drain” which is now being re
versed.
Wang is stressing contin
ued high-standard Taiwan
participation in major inter
national scientific activities
where the ROC performance
level far outstrips the uneven
scientific capabilities demon
strated so far by the People’s
Republic of (Communist)
China.
— Dr. Wei Yung, another
under-40 whiz kid personally
tapped by Premier Chiang,
holds the key deputy director
post at the Institute of Inter
national Relations, a Rand
type think tank located on a
mist-shrouded hillside in the
outskirts of Taipei.
He is revamping the insti
tute’s “Issues and Studies”
journal to stress high-level
academic articles that ex
plore options and discuss
ideas rather than running so
many articles that merely
endorse ROC policies.
He also plans to expand the
institute’s annual Sino-Amer
ican conference and hopes to
coax more academicians to
Taiwan to present papers;
some have been timid in the
past, fearful that attending
such a conference in Taiwan
might prejudice chances of
getting a visa to Peking.
Wei showed me the insti
tute’s surprisingly impres
sive Russian affairs collec
tion of periodicals and books
and said one of his goals is to
bring in some young Chinese
who are Soviet affairs
scholars to replace retiring
“old Russia hands.”

Guinness editor
shot to death
LONDON (UPI) - Police
today launched a hunt for an
assassination squad believed
responsible for murdering Ross
McWhirter, coeditor of the
Guinness Book of Records, in a
hail of bullets.
McWhirter’s death came a
month after he offered a cash
reward for the capture of
persons responsible for a recent
Irish Republican Army bomb
ing campaign in the London
area.
Rosemary McWhirter said
gunmen shot her husband
Thursday evening on the
doorstep of their North London
home when he went out to
investigate two men who
earlier had stepped from the
shrubbery and threatened her
with pistols.
Scotland Yard said an IRA
assassination squad probably
murdered the 50-year-old edi
tor, but the Yard declined, as is
its custom, to officially blame
the IRA.
McWhirter, who started the
Book of Records 20 years ago
with his twin brother, Norris,
suffered head and stomach
wounds in the shooting. He was
pronounced dead on arrival at
a hospital.
Scotland Yard said the
gunmen fled in Mrs. McWhir

McWhirter last month offered
