Reagan moves ahead
of Ford, poll shows
By CLAY F. RICHARDS
A new Gallup poll shows
Ronald Reagan has moved
ahead of President Ford as the
choice of Republican and
independent voters for the GOP
presidential nomination.
The poll showed Reagan was
favored by 40 per cent of
Republicans questioned in late
November, Ford by 32 per cent.
That was a sharp reversal from
the Gallup figures in mid-
October, which showed Ford

Bar to hear Cox
ATLANTA (UPI) — Former
Watergate special prosecutor
Archibald Cox addresses the
Atlanta Bar Associaion today at
their quarterly luncheon.
Cox, now professor of law at
Harvard University, was ap

Among independents, 27 per
cent favored Reagan and 25 per
cent favored Ford in late
November, compared with mid-
October when Ford led 26-20.
The poll coincided with the
formal opening of the presiden

Harrison has received 20 job

began appearing on the fami

Wednesday wanting to help out.
Now the family wants to help
others in similar circimstances.
“I wish people that wanted to

Homeless immigrant
to have nice holiday
CHICAGO (UPI) - Joe
Masny, a Polish immigrant who
has lived under Chicago’s
viaducts for nine years, is
going to have a “nice, warm
Christmas” this year because
of a guy named Perez.
Abel Perez, 33, picked up Joe,.
46, from under a viaduct
Wednesday and offered him
free room and board.
“I saw in the newspaper
about this man being stranded
by the viaduct,” Perez said. “I
said to my wife, ‘l’m going to
pick up this man, hon. I took
my daughter to school and then
some immediately wanted off.
A committee supporting Sen.
Frank Church, D-Idaho, for the
Democratic presidential nomi
nation, was registering today
with the Federal Election
Committee. The filing is a legal
step permitting the Church
group to raise funds pror to his
formal announcement, which
may come before the end of the
year.
The shift in support between
Ford and Reagan was the
biggest and most sudden
recorded by Gallup since 1963,
when Nelson Rockefeller’s re
marriage plunged him below
Barry Goldwater in the race for
the 1964 GOP nomination. But
the White House discounted the
latest results.
“In any campaign, there are
ups and downs in the polls,”
Deputy Press Secretary Wil
liam Greener said Thursday.
The latest survey was taken
Nov. 21-24, shortly after Reagan
formally announced his can
didacy and after Ford’s cabinet
shake-up, including the firing of
Defense Secretary James R.
Schlesinger.
