Polly’s Pointers
From rick rack riot
to blue jean dream
By Polly Cramer
Polly’s Problem
DEAR POLLY - I have so many small pieces of rick
rack and bias tape in all colors that are from one and a
half to ten inches long Do you know of any way I could
use them? — MRS. E M
DEAR MRS. E.M. — Such pieces could be used to
make decorations for denim jackets and blue jeans by
shaping the pieces to form flowers, letters, animals,
leaves, etc. and then have a bit of embroidery added to
make them more realistic. I am sure you can come up
with gay effects that teen-agers like on such clothes.
The same type decorations could be made to use on
dresses and suits for the wee ones, too. — POLLY.
DEAR POLLY — My Pet Peeve is with the TV commercials
using very small children since we cannot understand a word
they say. What they hope to accomplish by using these small
children is beyond me. — L.S.
DEAR L.S. — I am sure it will be good news to ad agencies
who do this to know that you are at least trying to hear their
messages. — POLLY.
DEAR POLLY — The reader who wants to recycle bread
twist ties could use them to tie small plants to stakes But the
use I like best is to twist two of them of the same color
together and slip through a Christmas tree ball to hang it on
the tree Fasten one end to the ball that usually has an eye or
loop at the top and bend the other end so it will hang on the
tree branch Just a crook at the end will hold a small
lightweight ball, but the heavier ones should have the end of
the tie wrapped around the branch two or three times. -
DEAR POLLY — I save all those foam plates that come
with meat on them I find them handy for putting in the bottom
of my garbage bags, especially the heavy paper ones. This
keeps the bottom of the bag from getting wet and also helps
hold it up firmly They are also great to use to catch the peels
when peeling potatoes, and so on and for use when going on
picnics. Always wash them well before storing - MRS P Z
DEAR POLLY — To keep my glass shower doors free from
a cloudy soap scum, I clean them and then rub on a bit of oil
with a soft cloth Vegetable, baby oil and petroleum jelly oil
will all work. — MRS.P R.

Benefits of
various fats
By Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D.
DEAR DR. LAMB - I think
two of your statements in a re
cent column are contradic
tory. You said that decreasing
saturated fat and increasing
polyunsaturated fat in the diet
is beneficial, but then you said
too much of either will raise
your cholesterol level. Isn’t it
true that as long as you have a
favorable ratio of unsaturated
fats to saturated fats the more
fat you consume the better it
is for the cholesterol reading?
I’m leaving aside, for the mo
ment, the problem of in
creased calorie intake with
the fat intake
DEAR READER - No, if you
read my comments correctly
they are not contradictory. I
said that with regard to
decreasing saturated fats and
increasing polyunsaturated
fats, safflower oil is the
superior to corn oil. May I
point out that not all in
vestigators believe that you
get lots of benefit from poly
unsaturated fat.
Then I went on to say that
too much of either fat could
increase the cholesterol.
The point is this, you should
limit your total fat intake to
no more than 35 per cent of
your total calorie intake That
means all fat, saturated,
monounsaturated, and polyun
saturated fat. Some new
products on the market which
advertise that they are high in
polyunsaturated fat and low in
saturated fat are not all that
good, because they are high
fat foods and must be used in
moderation. The second
limitation is on saturated fat
which should be limited to no
more than 10 per cent of your
calories.
Clearly, if half of one’s
calories are from unsaturated
fat that is too much. These are
the recommendations of The
Inter-Society Commission on
Heart Disease to prevent
heart and vascular disease I
do not recommend a binge of
consuming polyunsaturated
fat to help lower your
cholesterol.
Your intake of polyun
saturated fat should equal
your intake of saturated fat
The rest of the fat can come
from the monounsaturated
fats.
For a more complete dis
cussion on fats you can send in

Radio City Station, New York,
NY 10019. That issue will
clarify terms of saturated fat,
monounsaturated fat, polyun
saturated fat, triglycerides,
lipoproteins, and cholesterol
commonly used in discussion
of fatty-cholesterol deposits
that cause heart attacks,
strokes, and other vascular
disease.
The need to limit calorie in
take to avoid obesity demands
that most people limit their
fat intake Remember, there
are nine calories in one gram
of fat compared to four
calories in one gram of either
carbohydrate or protein.
Most high-fat foods contain
little bulk and are not diluted
with water. A pound of fat is
all calories. By contrast, a
pound of vegetables or fruit
which is mostly carbohydrate
is greatly diluted with water
and bulk. Only a fraction of
their weight is really useable
carbohydrate. Lean meat is a
small amount of protein ex
panded with a lot of water.
Concentrated foods, such as
fats, oils, lard, margarine, or
butter, as well as concen
trated sweets such as sugar,
honey, and syrups must all be
limited in the diet if you really
want to limit the calorie in
take.
