rescued
•• from ocean
CAPE HATTERAS, N.C.
(UPI) — Twenty-one Mexican
*• sailors, tired and hungry after
bouncing around in the Atlantic
for 72 hours without food,
received a hot meal today and
bedded down at Coast Guard
stations.
“They were the happiest
■» bunch of people you ever saw,”
said a Coast Guard spokesman
as the men, three each from
seven 48-foot trawlers, arrived
’in the quieter waters of
Pamlico Sound.
“They weren’t sick. They just
~ couldn’t prepare anything.”
The seven boats, owned by
the Mexican government, set
sail from a Norfolk, Va.,
| '» shipyard Tuesday but became
scattered and confused after
the radio on the lead boat
failed.
Winds rose to 35 knots and
the boats were tossed about in
Diamond Shoals by crisscross
» ing swells of up to 11 feet.
Three lost power.
Thursday morning, lost and
confused, they radioed for help
1 * and shot off a flare when they
I spotted Diamond Shoals light
station.
, They were rounded up by two
44-foot motor lifeboats, a cutter,
a helicopter and a plane about
35 miles southeast of the Cape.
• They were then towed and
escorted to Coast Guard sta
tions through Ocracoke and
Hatteras inlets to await repairs.
* “You really learn about your
crew out there and how they
react to danger and being lost,”
, said the skipper of one of the
boats, Eduardo De Los Santos,
32, of Mexico City.
“Some act with serenity.
• Some act with despair. My boat
runs perfect. I trusted my
boat,” said Santos, one of the
( few who could speak English.
“If this would have happened
in Mexico, we wouldn’t have
gotten the same help,” he said
• of the Coast Guard response to
their pleas.
. Teenagers
terrorize
passengers
. NEW YORK (UPI) — Eleven
teenagers terrorized 15 passen
gers on a subway train in
Brooklyn Thursday night,
• threatening them with convinc
ing looking toy pistols and
knocking some of them to the
, floor.
Transit police said the youths
evidently meant to rob the
riders of the train, but all they
• took was $5, a wrist watch and
a portable radio.
A police spokesman said the
youths, aged 14 to 18 years old,
trooped into a car on the
Manhattan-bound train at the
Ditmas Avenue station.
. Two of them pulled toy
pistols and a third an unloaded
“pen gun” capable of firing .22-
caliber bullets, the spokesman
* said, and that the toy guns
“looked good. They could fool
anybody.”
, 'hie youths punched several
riders, knocking them to the
floor, police said, and one took
the loot from the fear-stricken
• passengers. No one was seri
ously injured in the incident.
A few riders escaped the car
at the Church Avenue station,
* where they told Transit Poli
cent what happened. Fifteen
officers were waiting when the
, train arrrived at the next stop.
, Ex-wife
stands-in
. PORTLAND, Ore. (UPI) -
Thomas L.R. Moore’s intended
bride was sick in bed so
Moore’s ex-wife stood in for her
’ at the wedding ceremony.
The Rev. William Gardner of
the Good News Tabernacle
, performed the marriage and
said the groom, 57, and his ex
mate were “obviously still good
friends.”
» “I know all about things like
this,” the former Mrs. Moore
said. “We were married for 15
years.”
Moore, a retired rodent
control specialist, and his proxy
wife have been divorced for
■ more than a year.
But Moore had some explain
ing to do when he got home to
I his ill bride, the former Margie
• O’Neal. "His wife didn’t know I
was going to stand in for her,”
said the former Mrs. Moore.
