Boys’ Club
goes hiking
The Boys’ Club of Griffin
enjoyed a hike to Lake
Emerald, accompanied by their
leaders, Ricky Lowry and
Grover Sowell.
Ten boys made the hike. A
hike is planned for early
February over the new Carlton
Colquitt Trail near Thomaston.
Boys in the East Griffin area
interested in hiking and cam
ping are urged to register for
this activity at the Boys’ Club in
East Griffin. Grover Sowell is
chairman of the program
committee.
February jurors announced
Jurors for the February term
of Spalding Superior Court have
been drawn. These include
grand jurors as well as civil and
criminal jurors.
The grand jurors and the civil
week jurors will report for duty
on the first Monday in
February. The criminal session
jurors will report on the second
Monday.

for Boys ’ Club banquet
Josh Powell, former Georgia
Tech basketball great and
current director of the Josh
Powell Club for Boys in Atlanta,
will be the featured speaker at
the Griffin-Spalding County
Boys’ Club’s annual awards
banquet, Thursday, Jan. 29.
Powell was an outstanding
athlete at Georgia Tech and
captained the 1962 basketball
team. He toured Southeast Asia
in 1962 with a Christian
basketball team, Venture for
Victory, playing ball and giving
inspirational talks at half time.
Powell started the Josh
Powell Club for Boys in 1964 and
currently operates this club and
the All Seasons Camp near

Bar Association, Powell
presently serves as a deacon at
the North Avenue Presbyterian
Church in Atlanta. He is
married to the former Ann
Morris of Clarksdale, Miss., and
they have one daughter.
The awards banquet will be
held in the fellowship hall of the
First United Methodist Church.
Cost of the buffet will be $6 per
person and the public is invited.
