MORE WOMEN SUICIDES
LOWEST BODY OF WATER
Nobody denies that Confucius, who claimed the wife is the
property of the husband, was a male chauvinist pig ... What's
the average annual rainfall around your place? In Nevada, the
driest state, it's 8.8 inches... Why the suicide rate among
women has gone up 45 per cent in the last dozen years I can't
say.
What girls most frequently find wrong with their gentle
man friends has been reported here. Now comes research on
what men object to mostly about some girls. No. 1 on that
list of handicaps, they say, is unpleasant disposition. No. 2,
moral standards lower than the man's. No. 3, inability to have
children. No. 4, something other than good looks. No. 5,
a j-eligious faith not the same as the man's. Batches of fellows
queried also objected to girls who had been divorced, who had
experienced premarital sex, who had come from families the
men considered inferior, and who seemed less intelligent,
less educated and less well-to-do. Our Love and War man says
he fails to see how this list differs all that much from the
women's complaints.
LYING
It's a crime for a citizen to tell a lie to a federal official. But
it's not necessarily a crime for a federal official to tell a lie to a
citizen. Is that equitable? About 50 U.S. representatives don't
think so. There's a move afoot in Congress to pass a bill also to
outlaw lying by people who work for the government.
Client asks how much of the 69 cents that you spend
on a box of breakfast cereal goes to pay for the grain in
it. Just 3 cents. Figure 12 cents is put forth for advertising and
7 cents for cardboard. The rest is divvied up, though not neces
sarily evenly, among the people who get it to you.
QUERIES FROM CLIENTS
Q. ''Wasn't President Andrew Johnson illiterate?"
A. Until his wife taught him how to read and write, he was.
Q. "How tall was that heroic British soldier known as
Lawrence of Arabia?"
A. T. E. Lawrence stood 5-foot-5’A.
Q. "How did the 'Forty and Eight Society' of the American
Legion get it's name?"
A. American soldiers during World War I spotted a French
boxcar labeled "Hommes4o, Chevaux 8" meaning "40 men, 8
horses." Those temporary soldiers handled that military no
tion of a boxcar's capacity with some tough humor. The 40-
men-8-horses tag stuck around as a sort of private symbol to
certain men who remembered too well the conditions of live
stock and cannon fodder.
Q. "Where's the lowest body of water in the Western Hem
isphere?"
A. That would be Badwater Pool 280 feet below sea level in
California’s Death Valley.

Spare The Rod.,,
WAYCROSS JOURNAL-HERALD
The Supreme Court has put its
official sanction on the old adage
“Spare the rod and spoil the
child.”
Actually the High Court simply
affirmed without comment the
ruling of a lower federal court
which had held in a North Carolina
case that spanking was not a cons
titutionally prohibited “cruel and
unusual punishment.”
The decision which the Supreme
Court went along with said that a
student must be warned in ad
vance when certain behavior might
bring about a spanking with one

Keep pornography out
Recently the Clayton County Police
Department and the Clayton County
District Attorney’s Office ruled a movie
could not be shown in Clayton County. The
officers who were asked by a theater
owner to review the film determined the
film to be pornography. It will not be
shown in the county.
Once parents could send their children to
the theater and did not have to worry about
what was to be shown on the screen. Now,
55 Doesn’t Mean 75
John Dillin, an Atlanta-based
correspondent for the Christian Science
Monitor, reported that while traveling at
the legal speed limit of 55 miles an hour
on an interstate highway in Georgia in
one hour 55 cars and four trucks passed
him while he only passed two cars.
Almost any motorist could duplicate
Mr. Dillin’s experience.
Although drivers have slowed down,
on the average, from their former 70 to
■75 miles-an-hour speeds, it’s apparent
that they’re making a mockery of the

‘Our home life
has been a struggle’
DEAR DR. GRAHAM: My two teenage
sons both love the Lord very much, but
they are very concerned about how to
choose the right person to marry when the
time comes. I think they are especially
concerned because my husband is not a
Christian, and our home life has been a
struggle. — Mrs. T.R.
DEAR MRS. R.: I know you are thankful
for this concern. So many young people
make the same mistake you perhaps did,
in thinking that lasting happiness can be
found in a relationship that has no common
spiritual foundation in Christ.
First, I would encourage them to
commit this whole matter to the Lord now

Worries Relative
Vidalia Advance
If currently worried about business
problems, family problems, etc.,
remember that your worries are
relative. Ten years from now, as the
saying goes, you’ll have forgotten all
about your current worries, in nine of ten
cases.
That alone is not sufficient comfort to
allay one’s worries, but one should also
remember there are many who have
greater, more critical problems. Anyone
can look around and find many things for
which to be thankful.
The experts tell us ninety per cent of
the things we worry about never
materialize. They also say we are unable
to exercise any control over most of the
other things. Most worry is thus wasted
emotion.

The exception, according to the
court is for “those acts of miscon
duct which are so antisocial or
disruptive in nature as to shock the
conscience.”
The ruling also said, subject to
the aforementioned exception, that
spanking should not be employed
as a “first line” of punishment but
the teacher should try some other
means of discipline first.
Actually, most school systems in
the nation today are probably do
ing pretty much what the court
prescribed although it is the ob
servation of some people that they
have tended to get too far away
from corporal punishment.
parents are afraid for their children to
attend movies unless they have previously
been previewed by the parents.
We are glad to see the theater owners in
Clayton County are cooperating with the
police department and the district
attorney’s office. It shows the theater
owners have an interest in their customers
and the people of Clayton County. Also,
they know pornography will not be
tolerated.
billboards that “55 means 55.”
Nor does it appear that Gov. Busbee’s
much publicized “Energy Conservation
Month” in October had any substantial
effect on driving habits--this despite the
fact that surveys show that 88 per cent
of Americans see a need to save energy.
If motorists would practice what they
profess, we could save as much as
100,000 barrels of imported oil a day.
Very few of us, though, are willing to
make so simple a change in our driving
patterns.

and trust Him to provide them with the
mate of His choice. Believe it or not, God is
more concerned about the right person for
each of them than they are.
Second, they should search out what the
Bible says about marriage and the
characteristics of a godly wife. Chief
among these characteristics is that she
must be a committed Christian who will
help raise her children to love and obey our
Lord.
Finally, no two persons’ experience is
exactly the same. However, when the time
comes, I believe God will give direction if
they are trusting Him, both through cir
cumstances and through the inward
conviction of the Holy Spirit.
