Money also put a clamp on
Atlanta guard Tom Henderson,
shutting him out of the middle
and holding him to 12 points.
“I was just trying to contain
Henderson rather than steal the
ball,” said Money, who turned
21 today. “I knew his game was
penetration, so I tried to
counteract it”
Meanwhile, Eberhard was
winning a battle with his old
University of Missouri team
mate, John Brown. He hit 9 of
13 shots from the floor and 7 of
8 from the foul line, his biggest
output in more than two
months, while Brown got 11
points.
The Pistons jumped into a 30-
21 lead at the end of the first
period but the Hawks rallied to
trail only 58-56 at the half.
Atlanta grabbed the lead at 94-
93 on Tom Van Arsdale’s
jumper with nine minutes left
and held it until Eberhard put
Detroit back in front with 1:46
left.
John Drew tried to save it for
the Hawks with a shot from the
foul circle but 6-11 Bob Lanier
made his force the shot and it
missed. Atlanta then had to
press to get the ball back,
setting the stage for Money’s
foul shots.

All you got to do is ask
KO by any name
is still a KO
By Murray Olderman
Q. I think George Chuvalo and Jerry Quarry fought only
once, back around 1968 or '69. I would like to know if Quarry
was knocked out or if it was ruled a TKO. — Michael Lampros,
London, Ohio.
On Dec. 12, 1969, in their sole meeting in the ring, Jerry
Quarry was counted, out while down on one knee after being
put on the canvas by George Chuvalo in the seventh round.
Quarry claimed he was given a wrong count. “What kind of
shape was he in,” countered Chuvalo, “when he couldn’t tell
the difference between 8 and 9?” So it’s in the books as a
straight knockout. As a matter of fact, technically, there is no
longer any such thing as a TKO. Any bout that’s stopped
because one man is in bad shape is considered a knockout.
Q. What has winning the most valuable player award meant
to Joe Morgan? Has it helped him monetarily? — G.S.,
Covington, Ky.
You can hear it straight from Joe: “Far as I’m concerned,
the most significant thing is the fact a guy won who’s a jack of
all trades. And that’s the way baseball should be — the sport
got away from it with the designated hitter. Now this puts
more emphasis on the small guy who can do a lot of things. As
far as money (via endorsements, etc.), it has meant nothing.
I’m still black, if you want to be realistic about it. That’s no
gripe; it’s just the way it is. I look at the MVP as a great
honor; any money I derive from it will be in my contract.”
Q. Did Jim Brown ever have any serious injuries in his
career? — Bill Colley, Cuba, N.Y.
No. That was one of the phenomenal aspects of Brown’s nine
year career with the Cleveland Browns. He never missed a
game because of injury. He missed time in only one game
because of injury — when he was knocked cold in the first half
of a Browns-Giants game. He returned in the second half to
finish the game but didn’t remember much of it. Brown
started the pattern of ball carriers pettine up slowly after
each play so the other team would never be able to tell if he
was hurt or not.
Q. Maybe you can settle a friendly argument. I say
Pittsburgh’s Franco Harris went to college at Penn State. And
he said he went to another school. Who’s right? — Jerry
Bernstein, Santa Paula, Calif.
France went to school at Penn State. In fact, he was in the
same backfield as Lydell Mitchell of the Baltimore Colts, who
got more All-America attention as a collegian, although
Franco was drafted first, by the Steelers.
Q. Which college presently has the most players in pro foot
ball? — Chuck McElwain, Sterling, Colo.
The honor goes to the University of Southern California. Its
34 representatives (I didn’t say graduates) are almost enough
to stock John McKay’s new Tampa franchise. The second best
“farm” school is Ohio State.

Palmer fires
sizzling 64
PALM SPRINGS, Calif.
(UPI) — That infectious grin
was wide on Arnold Palmer’s
face and Billy Casper probably
was just as happy, although
you couldn’t tell it from looking
at him.
Palmer, who hasn’t won an
American title since 1973, shot
an Eldorado course record
tying 64 Thursday in the second
round of the Bob Hope Desert
Classic, an event he has won
five times, while Casper, who
has won 51 tournaments but
only one in the last two years,
had a 65.
That left Casper at 137, two
shots behind pace-setter Brian
Allin with Palmer another shot
back at 138 along with Dwight
Nevil and Bob Murphy. Jack
Nicklaus is at 139 with George
Cadle while defending cham
pion Johnny Miller is at 140
with Jim Colbert, David Gra
ham, Bill Rogers and John
Mahaffey.
“I can’t remember the last
time I putted as well as I did in
this round,” said Palmer. “I’m
wondering what my score
might have been had I made
every putt I had a shot at.”
(Palmer missed four from
under eight feet.).
As it was, Palmer had nine
birdies and one bogey on a card
of 32-32. Casper shot 36-29,
coming back from an eagle and
five birdies. In many ways, it
was like old times watching
Palmer and Casper make all
those birdies.
Casper seemed headed for an
even-par round after he made
the turn in 36 while also playing
at Eldorado. Then he suddenly
caught fire as putt after putt
found the cup.
He holed a nine iron from 140
feet on the 10th for an eagle
two, dropped a 43-footer for a
birdie on 11, a six-footer for
another birdie on 12 and
wedged to within a foot for still
another birdie on 13. That was
