Paid bill
with pennies
LIVERMORE, Calif. (UPI) -
Richard Wagner, 39, irate
because his efforts to reduce
his heating costs proved futile,
paid his Pacific Gas & Electric
Co. bill with 52 pounds of
pennies.
“They’d be up to their bloody
necks in pennies if everyone
paid their bills this way,”
Wagner said.
He said that to cut down his
bill he installed a $4,000
skylight, put in SSOO worth of
insulation and bought a mi
crowave oven. And, he said, his
family turned off one heater at
night. They also used their
heaters only between 7 p.m.
and 9 p.m.
It was to no avail, he said.
His bill went up sls last month
to $76.65. That’s why he
plunked 7,665 pennies on the
counter at the PG&E office.
“It’s been a pleasure doing
business with you,” the manag
er politely told Wagner.
Man hurt

Timothy Waldrop, 18-year-old
son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin
Waldrop of Sunnybrook drive,
was admitted to Northside
Hospital in Atlanta yesterday
for treatment of a serious leg
wound he suffered when struck
by a car.
According to Griffin Police
Officer Larry Knight, who in
vestigated the incident,
Waldrop was standing next to a
parked car in the lot of Majik
Market on East College street
and was talking with his
brother, Keith, who was in the
vehicle.
An auto, driven by Donna
Susan Bozeman, 16, of 1542 West
Poplar street, backed into the
parked vehicle, crushing
Waldrop’s leg between the two
cars, Officer Knight said.
Waldrop was treated in the
Griffin-Spalding Hospital and
later transferred to Northside.
The accident happened
around 4 p.m.

Is your peace of mind worth five
cents a day? That’s about what it costs
to keep a 60-watt blub burning in your
house 24 hours, and it’s one effective
way to discourage burglars.
A burglary takes place in Georgia
every eight minutes. The surest means
of lowering this rate is for citizens to
plan their own protection.
Keep a light burning in front and back
of your property every night. Outside
lights should point toward the house, as
those pointing outward will blind neigh
bors or police who might see the
I burglar. When you’re away from home,
leave a light burning inside, both up
stairs and down.
Remember, a burglar hates to work
in the spotlight. Is your property
adequately lighted?

His, mother added, “They’ve
censured an innocent man, and I know
that. We raised Roscoe and he’s
innocent.”
Howard, his eyes bloodshot, said he
hopes young people and those who feel
“all politicians are crooks” will heed
the Senate vote.
“I feel we have seijt a message to the
people that we do not condone the kind
of irregularities that the evidence
against Sen. Dean disclosed,” said
Howard.
Sen. Lawrence “Bud” Stumbaugh, D-
Stone Mountain, who wanted to expell
Dean from the Senate but felt he could
not get the required two-thirds majority
— 38 votes — said he is glad the
controversy is over.
“I probably felt 100 times I wished I
wasn’t involved,” said Stumbaugh, a
member of the judiciary committee. “I
don’t like to hurt anybody, even when
they deserve it, but we had to show we
don’t believe in substandard ethics and
we don’t believe in corner-cutting.”
Alleged ‘Slasher’
LOS ANGELES (UPI) — Vaughn Orrin Greenwood, the
accused “Skid Row slasher," faces arraignment in Los
Angeles Monday on charges he killed 11 men.
The “slasher” terrorized Skid Row, cutting the throats
of nine men, mostly derelicts, in a two-month period that
ended last February.
The slayings ended after Greenwood was arrested on
other charges, stemming from a series of burglaries and
hatchet and knife assaults in Hollywood Hills, including
the burglary of actor Burt Reynolds’ home.
He was sentenced to 32 years to life on those charges. A
grand jury indicted him Jan. 23 on charges he killed the
nine “slasher” victims, and committed two similar
slayings 12 years ago.
