bank promotion
James R. Powers, son of Mr.
and Mrs. L. A. Powers of
Griffin, has been promoted to
assistant vice-president of the
South Carolina National Bank,
Columbia, S.C.
Powers, who also served in
the investment department, is
head government securities
trader and underwriter. He
I joined the bank in 1972 as a
trainee. He is a graduate of
University of Georgia.

president of the Southeastern
Synod of the Lutheran Church in
America, will be the guest
minister at St. John’s Lutheran
Church in Griffin on Sunday.
The Rev. Troutman’s sermon is
entitled “Partners in Ministry”.
St. John’s Church hold service
every Sunday at 11 a.m. at
Griffin Academy, Hudson and
Wilson roads. Sunday School
begins at 10 a.m.
Student named
Family Leader
of Tomorrow
Janet E. Gaston has been
named Griffin High School 1976
Betty Crocker Family Leader of
tomorrow. She is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Gaston,
South Sixth street extension.
The Griffin High student won
the honor by scoring high in a
written knowledge and attitude
examination administered to
high school senior here and
throughout the country Dec. 2.
She will receive a certificate
from General Mills, sponsor of
the annual Betty Crocker
Searcy for Leadership in
Family Living and becomes
eligible for state and national
honors.
From the ranks of all school
winners in the state, a State
Family Leader of Tomorrow
is selected through judging
centered on test performance
and receives a $1,500 college
scholarship. The second
ranking student in the state will
receive a SSOO scholarship.
Encyclopaedia Britannica
Educational Corporation will
present “The Annals of
* America”, a 20 volume

Mr. Bryant
Mrs. Beatrice Helms Bryant,
86, of 1010 West Solomon street,
widow of Mr. John B. Bryant,
died Thursday evening at
Brightmoor Medical Care
Home where she had made her
home for almost eight years.
A native of Fayette County,
Mrs. Bryant was bom Dec. 22,
1889, daughter of the late J. T.
Helms and the late Elizabeth
Ison Helms. She made her home
for most of her life in Experi
ment and was a member of the
DeVotie Baptist Church.
She is survived by a daughter
and son-in-law, Mrs. Thelma
Bryant Butler and J. D. Butler
of Griffin; a brother, Dewey
Helms of Griffin; stepgrand
daughter, Mrs. Ronald McCrea
of Jonesboro; five step great
grandchildren, several nieces
and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted
Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock
from the DeVotie Baptist
Church. The Rev. Ralph Estes
and the Rev. Homer G. Fowler
will officiate and burial will be
in Oak Hill cemetery. The body
will remain at Haisten Funeral
Home until carried to the
church 30 minutes prior to the
funeral hour.

GHS senior
is delegate
to ‘congress’
Cliff Miller, Griffin High
School senior, has been chosen
to serve as a delegate to the
Governor’s Bicentennial Youth
Congress to be held in Savannah
on Feb. 19-21.
This event is sponsored by the
Savannah Jaycees and the
Georgia Commission for the
National Bicentennial
Celebration. Seniors from each
public and private high school
in Georgia will assemble for
three days to hear speakers and
panel discussions on the future,
participate in committee
meetings and write a “declara
tion of the future”.
Approximately 200 students
will participate. Speakers will
include Savannah Mayor John
Rousakis, Senator Herman
Talmadge, Senator Sam Nunn,
Congressman Ronald “Bo”
Ginn and other state and
national leaders.
