Government and relief offi
cials were unable to estimate
the number killed in Friday’s
‘quake, but at least 6,000
persons have died since a giant
temblor rocked Guatemala and
other parts of Central America
Wednesday.
The latest jolt shook the
capital for 20 to 25 seconds,
registering 5.6 on the open
ended Richter scale, according
to the national observatory.
Flimsy houses and buildings,
already near collapse from the
initial ‘quake, caved in on
street after street from the new
shocks.
The ‘quake dumped about 20
houses into a deep gorge at La
Trinidad barrio in the capital
and cracked open the walls in
the city jail. Inmates were
trucked under heavy guard to
prisons outside the city.
“Some people died under
more rubble,” said Dawn
Macnab, field representative
for the CARE relief organiza
tion. “We really don’t know
how many, but it looks like (the
death toll) is going to get
worse.”
Mrs. Mac Nab said the latest
overall figure they had was
8,000 and “it could go much
higher.”
Red Cross officials said they
had no estimate of new deaths,
but said they treated about 15
injured.

California
included
in snow
By United Press International
Snow blocked mountain high
ways in Southern California,
rain drenched roads in Las
Vegas and ice and snow hit the
East, causing numerous traffic
accidents that resulted in at
least five deaths.
Farmers and ranchers in
Southern Calfomia were de
lighted with the wet, crop
saving weather. Santa Barbara
recorded about an inch and a
half of rain Friday.
However, mountain highways
were blocked by snow and the
California Highway Patrol said
about 30 trucks jackknifed,
spun out or stalled in the snow
and ice.
Two cars crashed head-on
along winding, rain-slicked
California 74 near Lake El
sinore, killing three persons
and injuring five others. The
meandering rural highway was
closed for hours while
firemen cut the victims from
the mangled wreckage.
Lightning struck police head
quarters in the small communi
ty of Port Hueneme, up the
coast from Los Angeles.
“It sounded like an explo
sion,” one policeman said.
“You never know these days.”
Another storm dumped nearly
a foot of snow on northeastern
Pennsylvania, spread a sheath
of ice across southern New
Jersey and gave New York City
its second major storm of the
week.
Two persons were known
dead and 11 others injured after
a multi-vehicle pileup on
slippery U.S. 22 just east of
New Alexandria, Pa. A police
dispatcher said between seven
and 10 vehicles were involved
in the smashup. “It’s bad,” he
said. “The roads are pretty bad
up there.”
More than three inches of
snow fell in New York, causing
wet ankles for pedestrians and
dozens of minor accidents.
Rain in the Las Vegas Valley
triggered a rash of traffic
accidents and power outages.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan
Police and the Nevada Highway
Patrol handled between 40 and
50 minor traffic accidents. One
elderly couple suffered major
injuries in a two-car crash on
U.S. 95 north near Lathrop
Wells.

Commissioner, others
face hearing Tuesday
ATLANTA (UPI) - Fulton
County Commission Vice Chair
man J.O. Wyatt and six other
defendants will face a prelimi
nary hearing Tuesday in an
alleged scheme to obtain a
liquor license through hidden
money and false statements.
Wyatt was met at Hartsfield
International Airport Friday
and served with a copy of
documents charging him with
inducement of another to
commit false swearing, con
spiracy to defraud and misre
presentation to police. He was
immediately released on his
own recognizance.
“I haven’t had time to look
into it,” Wyatt said later in the
day, “but I’ll have a statement
when I do. It will be after I
consult with my attorney,
probably Monday.”

GA. STAIE INSPECTION STATION
Wyatt had returned from a
trip to San Antonio, Texas,
when the papers were served.
He had been out of town when
he and six persons were
charged in the case earlier this
week.
In an unrelated development,
the Citizens and Southern
National Bank Friday adver
tised its intention to sell the
homes of Wyatt and an
associate in his law firm, Lynn
R. Battle. The ad was the first
of four that will have to be
published before the sales can
be legally conducted.
The bank’s action came six
months after it filed a
foreclosure action against
Wyatt, Battle and Wyatt &
Associates, P.A., Wyatt’s law
firm.
