Chicago defenseman flames Dale Tallon scored with
just over 19 minutes remaining in the final period last
night to break a tie and give the Black Hawks a 2-1 victory
over the Atlanta Flames in Hockey action. The Flames
took their 1-0 lead just five minutes into the game when
left winger Curt Bennett deflected a shot into the net.
Chicago tied it up after Dennis Hall beat Flames goalie
Dan Bouchard at point blank range. The Flames are idle
this weekend and host the Toronto Maple Leafs
Wednesday.

Georgia
The Georgia Bulldogs are out for revenge tonight when
they host the Vanderbilt Commodores in Southeastern
Conference basketball. The Commodores downed the
Dogs 95-85 in overtime earlier in the season in a televised
game at Nashville. Georgia is 9-9 over all and 4-5 in the S-
E-C. Vandy is 11-7 on the season and 7-2 in league play.
Hawks
A stronger team defense is wnai the Atlanta Hawks will
need tonight if they hope to down the Washington Bullets
in basketball action at the Omni. The Hawks are coming
off a 111-108 loss to Detroit Thursday and the lack of
coordinated defense has blamed for the wipeout of the 106-
101 lead the Hawks were balancing. The Los Angeles
Lakers invade the Omni tomorrow night in another tough
battle for the Hawks..

upset him much.
Allin, who won four decora
tions in Vietnam as an artillery
officer, started Friday as the
leader by two shots in the
SIBO,OOO Bob Hope Desert
Classic. When the day was
over, Allin was still the leader
by one shot despite a 3-over-par
75 at Eldorado.
Rain fell all day and
everyone’s play was affected,
except for young Mike Shea,
who shot a 65 at Indian Wells.
Jack Nicklaus saved a 72 round
at La Quinta with an eagle and
birdie on his final two holes,
while Billy Casper took a 74
and Arnold Palmer a 76 at the
same layout. Defending cham
pion Johnny Miller had a 73
and said he was lucky.
“I hit some real bad shots,”
Allin sahi of his 75, which
included two out-of-bounds that
cost him five strokes. “The
course played real hard but all
things considered it wasn’t that
bad if you take away the two
out-of-bounds.”
Allin, who has won four
tournament titles since coming
home from Viet Nam in 1970,
has a 54-hole total of six under
par 210 and a shot lead on Dave
Newquist, Dwight Nevil, Casper
and Nicklaus, a two-shot edge
on Rik Massengale and a three
shot advantage on Miller,
Mason Rudolph and John
Mahaffey.
Arnold Palmer, who had a
course record-tieing 64 at
Eldorado on Thursday, played
eratically in the rain for 76 that
put him at 214 with Shea and
six others. Palmer, though, was
expected to withdraw and leave
for his home in Latrobe, Pa.,
where his father, Deacon, died
Friday afternoon, shortly after
Arnold finished his round.

By MIKE HUGHES

INNSBRUCK (UPI) - Leah
Poulos and Sheila Young,
unruffled by the row which has
affected the morale of the
younger members of the team,
won medals today in the
women’s 1,000-meter Olympic
speed skating event behind
world record holder Tatiana
Averina of the Soviet Union.
Poulos, of Northbrook, 111.,
finished second to finally win a
medal after previously being
unplaced here and at Sapporo
four years ago. The 25-year-old
Young, of Detroit, took the
bronze to become the first
American to win three medals
at a single Winter Games.
Palmer’s
father
dies
ORLANDO, Fla. (UPI) -
The 71-year-old father of golf
champion Arnold Palmer, Mil
fred J. Palmer of Latrobe, Pa.,
died of a heart attack while on
a golfing vacation near here
Friday afternoon.
A friend of the family found
Palmer’s body in his room at
the nearby Bay Hill Country
Club, which is owned by Arnold
Palmer. The friend said the
elder Palmer apparently died
soon after completing a round
of golf.
The body was being prepared
today for shipment to Latrobe
for services and burial to be
announced later.
In addition to Arnold, survi
vors include Palmer’s widow
Doris, another son, M. J.
“Jerry” Palmer Jr., and two
daughters, Mrs. Lois Jean
Tilley of Washington, D.C., and
Mrs. Sandra Sarady of Latrobe.
Milfred Palmer had been
associated with the Latrobe
Country Club since 1921 and
was still course superintendent,
a position to which he was
appointed in 1924. He also was
appointed golf professional at
the club in 1931 but retired
, from that position last fall.

The row between Women’s
1 Speedskating Coach Dianne
! Holum, who coaches the young
er members of the team, and
' Phillip Krumm, president of the
; United States Olympic Commit
-1 tee, surfaced Friday when
1 Holum accused Krumm of
manipulating team selection.
At the center of the storm
was 19-year-old Kim Kostron of
I Minneapolis, who lost her place
' in the 1,000-meters to Peggy
1 Crowe of St. Louis, who
! finished down the field of 27 in
t 1:34.48.
1 Holum, who retired from
competition after winning the
1,000 in Sapporo, accused
Krumm, former president of
the U.S. Skating Union, of
favoritism and interference in
• team selection.
Krum called Holum’s charges
“extremely ill timed” and said
“I think Dianne is all shook up
because one of her pupils didn’t
make the team.”
Kostron, who had consistently
beaten Crowe in competition,
‘ lost to her in the Olympic trials
, at West Allis, Wis. It was then
decided to have a skateoff here,
I but it never materialized even
though the board originally
, voted 6-5 for the procedure. The
I decision was overruled by a 7-4
count following a mail vote of
members not originally present
at the trials.
But for Young and Poulos,
both veterans of the team and
, above the petty politics which
have riddled nearly every
American Olympic squad, the
day was one of joy.
Poulos, skating in the pair
before Avema, clocked 1:28.57
| and appeared satisfied with her
performance. The Russian,
whose world mark stands at
1:23.46, now came through with
a 1:28.43 and then had to wait
for Young, who was to skate
three pairs later.
Young, who said she thought
the 1,000 might be her best
event until she broke the world
500 world record on the eve of
the Games, blasted off fast but
was unable to maintain the

Donna Cawthon made seven
for Indian Springs and Susan

Elizabeth Strickland scored

as the Beechwood girls stopped
Griffin by 12 points. Susan Hiley

pace and finished in 1:29.14.
Averina’s medal was Russia’s
fifth gold award of the Games
putting the Soviets are ahead in
the unofficial medal count with
a 4-1-5 score. East Germany,
with two luge titles today, is
next at 2-0-2, and the U.S. third
at 1-3-1.
Finland, a traditional Winter
Games powerhouse, got on the
gold standard when Helena
Takalo upset Russia’s Galina
Kulakova, who was seeking a
record fourth gold medal, in the
5-kilometer cross country event.
Kulakova finished third, losing
the silver medal to teammate
Raisa Smetanina.
Takalo clocked 15:48.69 for a
comfortable victory after an
easy run over the Seefeld ski
trail.
Martha Rockwell of New
Lebanon, N.H., was 29th among
the 42 finishers with a time of
