Polly’s Pointers
Water conditioner
cleans crystal
By Polly Cramer
Inflation Fighter
DEAR POLLY - I cannot remove an opaque film
from the inside of my three crystal decanters. I have
tried bleach, ammonia, dishwasher detergent, vinegar
and a baking soda solution with popcorn kernels hoping
the friction would dislodge the film. None of these work
ed so please tell me what I can do to make them clear
and clean. - KATHERINE.
DEAR KATHERINE — This film certainly resisted a
lot of old standbys for such removal so I am wondering
if anything will help. Try filling each of them with hot
detergent suds plus two or three tablespoons of water
conditioner, let stand overnight and then rinse well. Or,
try shaking tea leaves and vinegar in each bottle until
the deposit is loosened and then use a bottle brush to
help remove it. Good luck to you. — POLLY.
DEAR POLLY — While working on my recipe file I needed
some new index cards so I cut up plastic bottles with fairly
straight sides — bleach bottles work fine. I made these
“cards” the same size as the recipe cards, with one-half inch
extensions at the top for the names of the categories. The
names such as “Cakes”, “Candy”, etc. were put on with em
bossing but a marking pen could be used. — DORIS.
DEAR POLLY — One of my Pet Peeves is with advertisers
who send brochures and long letters that we do not have time
to read. What I am most interested in is “What is the deal?”
and “How much?” The price is usually almost invisible, so I
just toss them in the basket, even if I might be interested in
the product.
Another Pet Peeve is with those doctors who answer a
patient in medical terms no ordinary person can understand.
Then the doctor is annoyed when the patient asks for an ex
planation. I think they are obligated to explain any treatment
or medication so it can be understood. — MILDRED.
DEAR POLLY — Annie could use some of her many table
napkins as guest towels arranged in different ways in her
bathroom. They could hang from towel racks or some might
be stacked on a small tray put on the sink, counter or
anywhere they are easily accessible for guests. Some of these
napkin-guest towels could also be put in the guest room. —

Dr. Lamb
He awakens
with quick beat
By Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D.
DEAR DR. LAMB - My
husband wakes from a sound
sleep with his heart beating
rapid and hard, and
sometimes with shortness of
breath. His hands break out in
a cold sweat and sometimes
his leg muscles jerk. These
spells last from five to 10
minutes. There is slight dis
comfort in the upper ab
domen.
He doesn't drink coffee,
alcoholic beverages or smoke.
He is 50 and not overweight.
His blood pressure has always
been a little on the low side
and his occupation involves
plenty of physical exercise.
Sixteen years ago he had
similar symptoms and was
found to have a duodenal ul
cer. With antacids and diet he
was pronounced cured. When
these spells started this time
the doctor said it was nerves
and gave him Valium. It
helped. This year a different
doctor also prescribed
Valium. My husband says he
feels relaxed when he goes to
bed and it seems hard to
believe that nerves could be
the cause of these symptoms
while he is sleeping. Do you
agree?
Could these be symptoms of
a ruptured esophagus, since
they occur only at night while
he is lying down? The next
day, he feels fine and does a
day’s work. We would like
your opinion.
DEAR READER — Distur
bance of sleep is sometimes a
symptom of various
emotional problems, in
cluding anxiety and depres
sion. However, the absence of
symptoms at all other times
does make one wonder.
The rapid forceful heartbeat
sounds like one of the parox
ysmal rapid heart actions that
occur in attacks. They are
sometimes related to anxiety
or nervousness but may not
be. Such attacks can be
precipitated by digestive dis
turbances.
Your husband does not have
a ruptured esophagus but he
may well have a hiatal hernia,
which may be what you mean.
This is a hernia (rupture) of
part of the stomach through
an enlarged hole in the
diaphragm. It is often
associated with leakage of the
acid contents of the stomach
into the lower esophagus when
one is lying down. This can
cause some “burning in the
pit of the stomach.”
The irritation of the lower
esophagus can then trigger an
attack of rapid heart action or
even extra beats (skipped
beats) of the heart. Antacids
are part of the treatment of
such a condition. For more in
formation on hiatal hernia

Hernia, Esophageal Reflux.

in care of this newspaper, P.

tion, New York, NY 10019.
Breaking out in a cold sweat
could be a reaction to an at
tack of rapid heart action but
it can also be a manifestation
of nervousness as can the
muscle jerks. There is
naturally some anxiety though
in anyone who wakes up with
reason to think something is
not right with the way the
heart is functioning. When
your heart is beating rapidly
and forcefully, it does get
your attention regardless of
the cause.
Your doctor might need to
take X rays of the stomach for
the particular purpose of look
ing for a hiatal hernia.
