MOST SHAPELY BODY
VD EVERY 60 SECONDS
BARTENDERS LISTEN
Name the 10 citizens in this country whose bodies are in
the best physical shape. Pollsters asked 3,000 editors to do
that . Possibly, most of the editors queried were at least 40
years old, because eight out of their top 10 candidates indeed
were 40 or older. Mary Tyler Moore, who recently turned 40,
got more votes than anybody else. Next came Katharine
Hepburn, 66. Fred Astaire, 76, pulled in third. And down the
line in order were Arthur Ashe, 32; Johnny Carson, 50; Lena
Horne, 58; John Lindsay, 54; Margot Fonteyn, 56; Henry
Fonda, 71; and Diana Ross, 30.
VENEREAL DISEASE
Q. "How frequently in this country does some kid between
13 and 19 years old catch a venereal disease?"
A. A new case crops up during those ages every 60 seconds.
It's a statistical fact that most murderers are either drink
ing, drunk or hungover at the time of the crime.
Dante didn't call his great work the Divine Comedy. He just
labeled it the Comedy. Other people in later years gave it the
Divine tag.
Homeowners in Columbia, Md., have agreed to stain their
dog houses exactly to match their own houses. Further,
they've agreed to roof their dog houses with exactly the same
sort of roofing materials they've used on their own houses.
LOVE AND WAR
When people get into matrimonial trouble, where do they
go for advice? Our Love and War man has learned that not
many turn to marriage counselors. The bartender is still the
first choice of most unhappy husbands who want some conver
sation. The druggist is the first choice of most worried wives in
a similar fix. Both the bartender and the druggist, please note,
get paid for the effort, though indirectly.
If you ask for booze in England, you'll get beer or ale, not
hard liquor.
If you were born in 1928, you arrived in this world during
the same year that Buddy, a German shepherd, became the
first seeing-eye dog for the blind.
How can you call yourself an oldtime seasoned editor
when you don't remember when Nelson Eddy wrote news
paper obituaries for a living before he turned to singing? What,
you don't even remember him singing? Tut tut.

It disgraces him
The Georgia Senate’s censure of its
fellow member Roscoe Dean of Jesup is an
expression of disapproval, a reprimand,
nothing more and nothing less. It carries
no fine, no suspension, no reduction of his
privileges or authority as a state senator.
It does tell him emphatically that he has
done wrong. Perhaps more important, it
warns others not to do the same. It
disgraces him.
Here in Griffin the matter had ex
ceptional local interest because our State
Senator Virginia Shapard introduced the
censure resolution. Her action triggered a
catapault of publicity which threw her into
statewide prominence and almost
universal approval and appreciation
which showed how hungry the public is for

From time to time we are asked the

Most of them welcome letters from the

defeating. Having been on the receiving
end, we suggest that the writer come
straight to the point, present reasons for
conclusions reached, and be as brief as
possible.

What about
smoking pot?
DEAR DR. GRAHAM: Do you believe
that it is right for a Christian to smoke
marijuana? —B.B.
DEAR B.B.: I believe Scripture gives us
some definite principles about matters like
this. Based on these, I am convinced that it
would be wrong for a Christian to use this
or any similar drug.
In the first place, marijuana is illegal in
most areas of the country. The Christian,
of all people, is called upon to obey the law.
If for no other reason, a Christian would
therefore be wrong in smoking marijuana.
In the second place, smoking marijuana
is yielding your mind to the influence of a
drug. The Bible specifically condemns this
type of thing (Ephesians 5:18). The Bible
tells us that we are to do nothing that
would block the influence of God’s Holy
Spirit in our lives.
Fairness to all
even a morsel of honesty and decency in
government and for punishment of those
who do wrong.
It also led to inevitable Capitol rumors
that she planned it all to gain personal
fame and to run for Congress. She has
insisted that this is not so, that she plans to
seek reelection to the Senate. Those of us
here at home who know here and sent her
to the Capitol take her at her word. She
expressed her own and her constituents’
views ably and well and probably was
surprised at all the publicity and side
effects of what she did.
None of the matter was pleasant to
anyone concerned, including Senator
Shapard, and it is a relief that it is over and
the Georgia Senate can move on now to
other things of importance.
arm of the United States postal inspectors.
But that was in the days when criminals
were considered offenders instead of
victims of society and were treated as
such.
Here are the addresses of Spalding’s
elected lawmakers:
U. S. Senator Herman Talmadge or U. S.
Senator Sam Nunn, RusseU Senate Office
Building, Washington, D. C. 20510;
Congressman John J. Flynt, Jr.,
Longworth House Office Building,
Washington, D.C. 20515; State Senator
Virginia Shapard, State Capitol, Atlanta,
Ga. 30334; Representative John Carlisle,
State Capitol, Atlanta, Ga., 30334, and
Representative John Mostiler, State
Capitol, Atlanta, Georgia 30334.
I believe also that the motive most
people have for using drugs like marijuana
is improper for a Christian. Often such
drugs are simply away of escaping from
the problems we face. The Bible, however,
tells us we are not to escape from our
problems, but to bring them to God. “Do
not be anxious about anything, but in
everything, by prayer and petition, with
thanksgiving, present your request to God.
And the peace of God, which transcends all
understanding, will guard your hearts and
minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6, 7,
New International Version). The Christian
who is truly trusting Christ has no need for
such temporary substitutes.
Perhaps the best advice is “Whether
therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever
ye do, do all to the glory of God” (I Cor.
10:31).

'Deliverance
will come
from the Lord'
BY BERTHA M. COMBS
To be deUvered is to be set free from a situation, a
condemnation, an accusation regardless of the source.
But it needs be known that “DeUverance WiU Come” from
the Lord if the individual wiU have the faith that the Lord
can and wiU bring him comfort out of chaos. When trials
come the individual may become frustrated, weary, worn
and impatient. If the beUever wiU ask for Divine wisdom,
he wiU find it; if the beUever wiU seek heavenly
knowledge, it wiU be given him; if the beUever will knock
at the door of understanding, God wiU open the Scriptures
unto him.
Through prayer, real prayer the true beUever can
conquer aU his foes. The great deUverance is the freeing
of the soul from sin through the salvation of Jesus Christ.
Prayer is power, real power that wiU lead one beyond the
realms of his imagination and his possibiUties. The
beUever is then led by the Holy Spirit into fields of
endeavor not even dreamed of by the speaker.
If an individual wiU take out time to ask himself a few
questions he can then examine his own life in the light of
righteousness. To pray is to steal away to some quiet
place even a personal praying ground where the seeker is
alone with God and the seeker can hear the sUence and
feel the presence of God.
Exodus 14:13, 22, 27 tells us: “Fear ye not, stand stUl
and see the salvation of the Lord... And the duldren of
. Israel went into the midst of the sea upon dry ground: and
the waters were a waU unto them on their right hand and
on their left. ..And the Lord overthrew the Egyptians in the
midst of the sea." Just as God deUvered the duldren of
Israel at the Red Sea, so wiU the Almighty Father deUver
aU who wiU caU upon His name in faith.
In man’s most distressing moments even during the
economic crisis and loss of hope and faith in a better day
for the world if man wiU have faith and pray God wiU
deUver on time. The Lord wiU deUver from sin and give
strength for trials and tribulations, and power to conquer
if the beUever wiU take time to pray sincerely and wait
with faith.
Some people may spend a life time brooding over past
mistakes of life, looking backward and reaUy Uving in the
past. Since one cannot reUve the past it is wise for him to
look forward whUe learning from the past and to press
forward to better things of life.
Although disappointments come, and they usuaUy come
when an individual is at his weakest point, yet through
faith “DeUverance WiU Come,” deUverance by the Lord.
The pathway of life may sometimes seem dreary, God has
promised power for everyone who wiU beUeve, grace
sufficient to accomplish the unusual thing. God’s power
and God’s grace come through faith and prayer.
It takes patience, tolerance, and spiritual strength for
one to hold out in faith and yield not to temptation and sin.
To Uve humbly before God and man, to forgive and not to
take revenge nor grudge nor a pay back attitude toward
those who would speak evU against one, to seek the
abundant life even the material needs of life for the
present and a life of righteousness of love of Überty and
happiness and to continue in prayer these are the
substances of life that help the beUever to endure. If the
seeker wiU reach out and touch Him in prayer through
faith, “DeUverance WiU Come.’”
