Getting better
MORTON GROVE, Ill.—Mrs. Cheryl Shaf says it has been a long and tiring year, costing
more than 114,000 for baby care, but she has turned a corner in caring for her four surviving
quintuplets. “It’s getting easier,” she said of caring for the toddlers, who turn a year old.
They have used 12,000 diapers. She is serving cake to them in their home. From left are

Whole families
victims of fires
By United Press International
Killer fires in four states
destroyed whole families and
caused thousands of dollars in
damage Sunday.
At least 18 persons were
reported killed.
A predawn fire raced through
a two-story frame house in
Warren, Pa., killing a family of
seven. Fire officials said Mr.
and Mrs. Harold Brown, one of
their daughters and their four
sons died of smoke inhalation.
Five members of a young
Chicago family were killed
when fire swept their North
Side apartment building. A
police official said an investiga
tion showed no signs of arson
although 17 other fires have
been set in the area since Jan.
13.
The victims — John Damptz,
22, his wife, Vickie, 21, and
their children, a 1-year-old girl
and two boys, ages 2 and 4 —

In New York, a roof and a
large airconditioning unit col
lapsed during a restaurant
WASHINGTON (UPI) - One
day last month nine policemen
were called to the city
employment office in Los
Angeles to control a crowd that
began gathering at 4 a.m. to
apply for one job opening for
an elevator maintenance me
chanic.
The incident, described in a
regional hearing of Congress’
Joint Economic Committee, is
being used as an illustration by
those urging Congress to
provide jobs quickly for many
of the country’s nearly eight
million unemployed.
In recent days a procession of
witnesses representing the
AFLCIO, Americans for Demo
cratic Action, and city, county
and state governments, ap
peared before the House Budget
Committee. They all were
urging Congress do something
about unemployment.
They cite not only the
hardship on individuals but also
the cost to the nation:
— Most economists agree
each 1 per cent drop in
unemployment would reduce
the federal deficit sl6 billion by
cutting welfare and unemploy
ment compensation payments
and bringing in taxes that are
not now being paid.
blaze, killing three firemen who
i were battling the flames. The
■ deaths brought to five the
number of firefighters who
' killed in the Une of duty in New
■ York this year.
Six other firemen were
i injured when the roof and
I airconditioning unit caved in at
, the Jolly Giant FamUy Restau-
■ rant on Staten Island.
I “They didn’t have a chance,”
a department spokesman said
• of the victims. “It (the air
conditioning unit) must have
• caught them flush. They were
. pretty badly banged up. ”
Three other fire victims
Saturday night and Sunday
included Mary Hegg, 95, Susan
Finnegan, 82, and Mary Burke,
s 87, who died in Chicago of
i injuries suffered in a fire at the
: Wincrest Manor Nursing and
Rest Home Jan. 30. It raised
i the death toll in that blaze to
19, one of the city’s worst in 50
: years.
— If unemployment, recently
about 8 per cent, were reduced
to 4 per cent, which many
economists call “full em
ployment,” next year’s federal
budget would show a surplus
instead of a $43 billion deficit.
— At full employment the
economy would produce $220
billion more in goods and
services.
Several possible methods of
providing more jobs are being
proposed in Congress:
PUBLIC WORKS: Congress
has passed a $6.2 billion bill for
construction projects expected
to create 600,000 jobs and
budget aid to keep local
governments from having to
lay off an estimated 100,000
employes. President Ford has
announced he will veto it.
PUBLIC SERVICE: A bill
comes before the House Tues
day to increase the number of
federally financed public ser
vice jobs in state and local
governments from 300,000 to
600,000. Ford plans to phase
this program out during 1977,
so this bill could produce
another veto fight.
