Polly’s Pointers
Salt and roast nuts
in one-step process
By Polly Cramer
Polly’s Problem
DEAR POLLY — Perhaps some other husbands are
like mine, and like to sleep on over-size pillows. Many of
my pillowcases are on the small side, so I always had a
time getting them on the pillows. One day I took each
side of a case and worked it in my hands like I do when
putting on pantyhose. This worked like magic and I have
no more trouble.
I do hope someone can tell me how to roast or poach
peanuts in the shell and salt them at the same time. —
MRS. D.L.N.
DEAR MRS. D.L.N. — A nut processing company ad
vised me that you might soak the peanuts (in their
shells) in strong salt water for a couple of days, dry out
thoroughly and then roast them. — POLLY.
DEAR POLLY — My main Pet Peeve is that being an avid
coupon user I think the customer should be protected in some
way from those coupons that appear on boxes and become out
dated while still on the shelf. Also, I do hope the manufac
turers are listening as fitted top sheets are every bit as
desirable as the fitted bottom ones. As far as I know a mail
order company is the only supplier of these and then only for
regular size beds. Why not king size beds too?
When I hard boil eggs and have more than I use at one time,
I crack the shells, let stand for a bit in cold water, but do not
remove the shells until I am ready to use the eggs. — MRS.
J.A.G.
DEAR POLLY — I accidentally made a fantastic discovery
that should solve Ruth’s problem with cleaning her fish tank.
While cleaning one of ours, I decided to stop standing at the
sink scrubbing with a brush trying to clean the castle, etc. that
are kept in the tank. Neglect had caused them to turn green. I
put some water in an enamel pan, poured in a generous
amount of bleach and popped the castle, ceramic turtle and all
parts of the filter into the water and left them for about an
hour. Everything was clean as new. TTiere is one warning:
everything must be well soaked and rinsed in clear water
before being put back in the water with the fish. — MRS. S.F.
DEAR POLLY — Lighter fluid put on a cotton ball will
remove that sticky glue that labels leave on any surface as the
stove, dishes, etc. — JOYCE.

making idea, Pet Peeve, Polly’s Problem or solution to a
problem. Write Polly in care of this newspaper.

Dr. Lamb
I What is
carotid stenosis?
By Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D.
DEAR DR. LAMB - I
would appreciate knowing the
cause of carotid stenosis.
What causes this buildup and
what is it made of?
DEAR READER - The
obstruction is caused by the
buildup of fatty-cholesterol
deposits in the wall of the
carotid artery.
There are two carotid
arteries, a right and a left
carotid. These are located on
each side of your trachea.
Each one divides into two
main branches, an external
and internal carotid. The ex
ternal carotid supplies the
outside region of the head and
the internal carotid artery
enters the skull and is a major
part of the circulation to the
brain.
The fatty-cholesterol
deposits that obstruct the
carotid are exactly the same
thing that obstructs the cor
onary arteries to the heart to
cause heart attacks or
obstruct arteries inside the
brain causing strokes. The
disease is a disease of
arteries, not a disease of the
heart or the brain and it can
affect any artery in the body.
The cause of these deposits
is not absolutely clear but we
know the likelihood of having
them is increased with high
blood cholesterol levels and
high blood pressure.
Obstruction of the carotid
arteries particularly with
buildup of fatty-cholesterol
deposits in other arteries in
the brain can lead to a stroke
or undesirable symptoms
associated with inadequate
blood flow to the brain.

strokes and circulation to the

DEAR DR. LAMB - One
time you told what to do for
leg or muscle spasms. I have
had them for several years
and the only thing the doctors
give me is quinine and I have
to take so much that it upsets
my stomach. Would you tell
me your remedy again?
DEAR READER - Leg
cramps are caused by many
things and people subject to
them should have a mediical
examination. You can’t cure
any disorders, such as poor
circulation, with the method I
suggested but the method can
give some people relief.
The trick is to keep the feet
and legs warm. Wear warm,
long socks to bed. The feet and
legs will cool first if you are
cold. The circulation is literal
ly diminished to the limbs to
conserve heat in the vital
center of the body. Also the
arteries carrying blood to the
legs will transfer heat to cold
blood in the veins returning to
the center of the body.
This heat transfer
mechanism conserves heat
for the vital center of the body
but allows the temperature in
the limbs to drop. You
counteract this by keeping the
whole body warm and by
keeping the legs warm.
Some people also benefit
from increasing the calcium
intake. But again, I'd like to
emphasize that all people with
these problems need a
medical examination to be
certain they do not have a
medical problem that needs
correction.
