sorority at the University of
Georgia in Athens.
JAMES HARRIS
James Harris of Griffin has
been named to the dean’s list at
Albany State College for the fall
quarter.
CHARLES MCKEMIE
Charles McKemie has been
named to the dean’s list for the
fall semester at the University
of Texas, Austin, Tex., for
achieveing a 4.0 average with a
full academic load of 16 hours.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eld
McKemie of Griffin.
JOYCE THOMPSON
Joyce Thompson of Griffin,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eld
ward Thompson, has been
elected vice-president of the
freshman class at Tift College,
Forsyth.
DAN A. GUSTAFSON
Dan A. Gustafson of Hampton
was named to the dean’s list fall
quarter of ’75 at Southern
Technical Institute.
TERESA M. ALONSO
Teresa M. Alonso, daughter of
Dr. and Mrs. Jorge P. Alonso of
Griffin, graduated cum laude at
the University of Dayton, Ohio
at its winter diploma exercises.
Miss Alonson received her
bachelor of arts degree,
majoring in Spanish.
LAURA GREGORY
Laura Gregory, a Georgia
Southern College senior, has
recently been assigned to 1976
winter quarter student teaching
activities by the Department of
Professional Laboratory Ex
periences of the School of
Education at Georgia Southern.
Miss Gregory, an elementary
education major, is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Gregory.
GLENN M. ELLIS
Glenn M. Ellis of Griffin has
been named to the dean’s list for
the fall quarter of 1975 at
Southern Technical Institute,
Chamblee.
NAN POWERS
Nan Powers, a senior
majoring in speech, drama and
English at Shorter College, was
presented in recital in the
Brookes Chapel at Shorter. A
native of Griffin, she presented
readings and dialogues from
“The Cocktail Party”,
‘ ‘Antigone” and “Crisis in
Woman’s Identity”. Miss
Powers is presently president of
the Shorter Players, a member
of Reader’s Theatre, the
student senate, Epsilon Sigma
sorority. She was named to
“Who’s Who Among Students in
American Universities and
Colleges” and won the Shorter
Player’s award last year. She is
also a dean’s list student. Her
parents are Mr. and Mrs. Henry
J. Powers of Griffin.

Connie L. Lipscomb has been
named to the dean’s list for the
fall quarter at Clayton Junior
College.
LYNDA HEGGIE
Lynda Heggie has been
named to the fall quarter dean’s
list at Albany State College.

The Rev. Ralph Estes, pastor
of DeVotie Baptist Church, was
minister of the day for the
Georgia General Assembly.
He attended the session at the
invitation of Sen. Virginia

Lee chairman
ATLANTA (UPI) - W.L. Lee
has been named chairman of
the board of the Atlanta Gas
Light Co. with Joe T. Laßoon
succeeding him as president of
the utility, it was announced
Tuesday.
Lee, 64, becomes the first
chairman of the company in
several years. He had been
president since 1961 and a
director since 1960.
Laßoon, 55, had been senior
vice president of operations for
the firm since 1974. He became
a director in 1970.
Girl, 7, injured
A seven-year-old girl was
injured yesterday afternoon
when she ran into the side of a
moving car on South 15th street,
near West College extension.
Griffin police said Victoria
Evans of 1252 HaUyburton
street was treated at the
Griffin-Spalding Hospital
emergency room. She was not
admitted to the hospital.
The car was driven by Mrs.
Mary Chambers of 1107 George
circle.

will be the speaker for the
Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner
in Atlanta Feb. 27. It will be held
at the Hilton Hotel. Some of the
state’s top Democratic office
holders are expected to attend
the 550^-plate affair.

Mr. H. Smith
Mr. Hugh Smith, 71, of
Doraville, formerly of Griffin,
died Tuesday at Crawford W.
Long Hospital where he had
been a patient for a week.
Mr. Smith was the son of the
late Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Smith of
Griffin.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Rebecca Wilkins Smith; a
son, David L. Smith of
Lawrenceville; two daughters,
Mrs. Mary E. Jellum of
Doraville and Mrs. Betty
Hughes of Griffin; 12 grand
children, one great-grandchild;
five brothers, J. T. Smith,
Henry A. Smith, Lewis Smith,
all of Griffin, Merrell Smith of
Newnan and Roy Smith of
Monroe; five sisters, Mrs.
Pauline Tatum, Mrs. Eva
McWhorter, Mrs. Lucille
Corley, Mrs. Evelyn Tarleton,
all of Griffin and Mrs. Lois
Payne of Hogansville.
The funeral will be conducted
Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock
in the R. T. Patterson’s Funeral
Home in Norcross. Burial will
be in Newnan. Friends may
visit the family at the Smith
home in Doraville.

projects were discussed for the
month of February.
