ATLANTA (UPI) — The Vanderbilt Commodores
refuse to throw in the towel even though their loss at
Tennessee the other night pushed them two games behind
the Vols in the Southeastern Conference basketball race.
The way Vandy coach Roy Skinner sees it, the Vols have
to (day four of their remaining seven SEC games on the
road, including a trip to Alabama, and Alabama, in
second place, a game ahead of the Commodores, has to
play at Vanderbilt.
“Hie schedule is still in our favor,” said Skinner.
“We’re even with Tennessee and now play five of our
seven remaining games at home. Tennessee has to go to
Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi State and Florida and
didn’t run away from any one of those four while beating
them at home.”
From this vantage point, the seventh-ranked Vols have
the edge. But, if Alabama beats Tennessee when the two
meet again on Feb. 28, they might have to hold a playoff

(m or about March 10 to decide who represents the SEC in
the NCAA Mideast Regionals.
SEC rules require such a playoff if two teams split their
two regular-season conference games and wind up with
identical league records.
Actually, the runnerup team in the SEC might have a
better chance in the NCAA playoffs than the champion.
The top SEC team will be in the same regional with top
ranked Indiana, second-ranked Marquette and 10th
ranked Notre Dame. The runnerup probably will go to the
West Regional where the stiffest competition is expected
to come from sixth-ranked UCLA, eighth-ranked Nevada-
Las Vegas and likely llth-ranked Michigan as the Big Ten
runnerup.
Last year, Kentucky surprised a lot of folks by knocking
off Indiana in the Mideast finals and made it to the NCAA
finals before losing to champion UCLA. Meanwhile,
Alabama, which had the same SEC won-lost record as

Tennessee, currently 17-2, has a critical problem to
overcome during its stretch drive. The Vols are down to
just eight players after having four quit since pre-season
practice began because they weren’t getting to play as
much as they would have liked.
The Vols normally only use seven or eight players a
game, but there is always the danger of excessive fouls or
injuries.
Tennessee was forced to clear its bench last Saturday in
a win over Kentucky when Johnny Darden was thrown out
of the game for fighting, Bernard King fouled out, and
Doug Ashworth injured his shoulder.
“People are trying to create a worry that isn’t there,”
said Tennessee Coach Ray Mears. “We’ve played with six

“When something goes wrong, such as Darden getting
thrown out, those who are left go about the business of
winning. They respond to setbacks.”
Mears said Monday night’s win over Vanderbilt “may
have been the pivotal game of our season.
“It was for sure we couldn’t have afford to lose to them
again since they beat us on their court earlier in the
season.
“You still can’t count Vanderbilt out,” said Mears. “We
have some rugged road trips ahead of us while they’re
mainly at home. If we had lost to them Monday night, they
would really have been in the driver’s seat.”
You can forget about perennial champion Kentucky,
winner of the SEC in seven of the past eight years. The
Wildcats, in the midst of one of their rare off seasons, are
now five games behind with seven to play.
“We’d sure have been in a lot better shape if we could
have won at Tennessee,” said Skinner.
