Golf shoes flight
prompted dismissals
FT. MCPHERSON, Ga.
(UPI) — Gen. Bernard W.
Rogers says he relieved two
members of his staff of their
duties and plans to reassign
them as a result of a military
flight which carried his golf
shoes from Ft. McPherson to
Ft. Leavenworth, Kan.
Rogers, commanding general
of the U.S. Army Forces
Command, said he paid the U.
S. Treasurer $931.60 out of his
own pocket for the flight.
The delivery of the golf shoes
was disclosed recently by Sen.

CANCER NOTE
HOUSTON (UPI) - The
American Cancer Society says
93,000 people will be stricken
with lung cancer in 1976 and
84,000 will die from the disease.
The Cancer Society said by
the end of 1975, 100,000
Americans had lung cancer and
only about 10 per cent of them
can be saved because it usually
is detected too late.

criticizing the military for
misuse of taxpayers’ money.
Rogers said that even though
he was not aware of the Feb. 17
flight, he had personally
reimbursed the government.
“Although I knew nothing of
and do not condone this misuse
of resources, I bear responsibil
ity for the actions of my
immediate staff and realize this
action was taken on my
behalf,” the general said.
A spokesman for the Forces
Command said the incident
occurred when several personal
items of Rogers, including the
golf shoes, were left behind
when the general flew to
Kansas for a conference.
The two officers, one a
lieutenant colonel and the other
a major, sent them out by a
twin-engine Army plane. No
other supplies were aboard.
The spokesman said when the
incident came to light, the two
officers offered to pay the cost,
which included fuel and mainte
nance of the plane, but Rogers
refused.
Social Security insurance—not savings plan

Q. I was 65 in November,
1975, and was covered by
Medicare that same month.
During November and De-
cember, I had doctor bills
amounting to $45. Is there any
way I can get reimbursed
even though I didn’t meet the
S6O annual deductible that
Medicare requires? —
S. O. P.
A. The medical expenses
you had in November and De
cember can be carried over
and applied toward your S6O
deductible for 1976. The law
allows the patient, in comput
ing the deductible in any
calendar year, to include the
amount of any expenses he
incurred in the last 3 months
of the preceding year which
were applied to the de-
Page 15
ductible for that year. This
special carry-over provision
avoids requiring persons with
substantial costs at the end of
one year to meet the de
ductible perhaps early in the
next year as though they had
no prior bills.
Q. I am 67 years old and do
not have Medicare coverage.
I am not eligible for hospital
insurance and I neglected to
sign up for medical insurance
when I was 65.
Now I am considering sign
ing up for full Medicare cov
erage, that is, if it’s not too
late. - Mrs. R. M. B.
— Griffin Daily News Thursday, February 26, 1976
A. The first three months of
each year are open enroll
ment periods for both parts of
Medicare — Part “A” (Hos
pital Insurance) and Part
“B” (Medical Insurance).
People who sign up during the
open enrollment period are
covered beginning with July
of the year of enrollment.
The basic premium for hos
pital insurance is S4O per
month and for medical insur
ance it is $6.70 per month. A
penalty for late filing is
tacked on to the basic
premiums for those who had
not signed up when first
eligible.
Ford says
congress
bugged out
WASHINGTON (UPI) -
President Ford says Congress
“bugged out” of meeting a
Russian challenge in Angola.
“Congress just bugged out,”
Ford told members of the
Inland Press Association at a
White House meeting last
Wednesday.
Asked about the Soviet-Cuban
action in the African nation, the
President said, “We challenged
them in Angola but we were
precluded from doing what was
necessary” by Congress.
