ATLANTA (UPI) - Soft
spoken Roy Skinner of Vander
bilt warned his colleagues not
to underrate his Vanderbilt
Commodores.
“We’re a better team now
than we were at the end of last
season,” Skinner said before
the 1975-76 campaign got
underway. “I don’t know if
we’re enough improved to be a
contender. But, we’re aiming
for that.”
Skinner was a better prophet
than many believed.
For turning up with a title
contender after his Com
modores were expected to wind
up in the middle of the pack,
Skinner today was named
Southeastern Conference bas
ketball coach of the year by
United Press International.
The Commodores, fifth last
season in the SEC and with a
relatively poor recruiting year,
go into the closing two weeks of
this season with a good shot for
at least a share of the league
championship.
That showing gave Skinner a
solid margin over Ray Mears of
Tennessee in balloting by
sportswriters and sportscasters
in the seven-state region.
Alabama’s C. M. Newton, last
year’s winner, took a distant
third in this year’s balloting
even though his Crimson Tide
is leading the SEC cage race.

Donnie Freeman and Neal

Wednesday night to pace top
seeded North Georgia to an 88-

the opening round of the
Georgia Intercollegiate Athlet
ics Conference tournament.
Leonard Scott, the GIAC
freshman of the year, matched
Freeman’s output of 29 points
in leading Georgia College past
LaGrange 74-67 while Shorter

Southwestern downed Piedmont

the “F Troop” composed of
seniors Jeff Fosnes, Butch
Feher and Joe Ford, are only
15-8 overall but 11-3 in SEC
play, a game behind Alabama,
with visits to LSU and Ole Miss
and home games with Missis
sippi State and Alabama
remaining.
“I’m really pleased the way
our players have played in the
SEC this year,” said Skinner.
“It’s always satisfying to win
the close games. We’ve won
more than our share this year.”
Vanderbilt’s conference losses
this season have been to
Alabama, Kentucky, and Ten
nessee, all on the road, and the
Commodores beat Tennessee
and Kentucky at home.
Skinner, now in his 16th
season at the Commodore helm,
has had two SEC cage
championships and six 20-win
seasons. Two years ago, Van
derbilt won the title by beating
Alabama twice and wound up
23-5.
This is the fourth time
Skinner has been named SEC
basketball coach of the year
and the dean of SEC coaching
has a 16-year record of 277-172.
The outlook is not bright for
Skinner and Vanderbilt for next
season, however. The Comm
dores have been using only
seven players most of this
season and four of those, the
“F Troop” and Mike Moore are
seniors. The most productive
underclassman has been 6-foot-
threatened by Oglethorpe and
ran up a 51-30 halftime
advantage.
Wayne McCants scored 14
points and grabbed 16 rebounds
to aid Scott, who pulled down 12
rebounds. Johnny Lebans and
Garry Patterson scored 19
points each for LaGrange.
Shorter was led by Jeff
Jones’ 20 points while team
mates James Hayes and Gus
Horton added 19 each. Tyrone
Monroe had 21 points for Berry.
Georgia Southwestern and
Piedmont fought a defensive
duel with Southwestern’s scor
ing ace, Calvin Hunter, limited
to 16 points and Piedmont’s
Roger Stokes getting the same
number.

9 sophomore John Sneed, who
is averaging about eight points
and seven rebounds per game.
Skinner credited the im
proved play of Sneed and
sophomore playmaking guard
Dickie Keffer with helping turn
the Commodores around after a
slow start.
“The seniors provided leader
ship and have played very
unselfishly,” he added. “We
have had good team play.

be a rebuilding year, Skinner

Truckers
ONTARIO, Calif. (UPI) —
Professional truckers — and
their rigs—will get a chance to
“show their stuff” Sunday in
the first annual drag race for
truckers at Ontario Motor
Speedway.
Truckers from all over the
couontry will be competing on
Ontario’s oval in side-by-side
racing and electronic timing.
“Times and speeds will seem
a little ridiculous if you
compare them to Don Garlits’
250 miles an hour here at
Ontario,” said promoter Rodger
Ward, two-time Indianapolis 500
winner. “But speed is relative
and these truck drivers are just
as serious about their perfor
mances as a Garlits is over his
fuel dragster.”

“We have a lot of people who

some may think.”

Training
SANTIAGO, CHILE (UPI) -
Chile’s Davis Cup tennis team
began training Wednesday for
the South American Zone
playoffs against Argentina. The
matches will be held in
Santiago March 5-7.
Veterans Patricio Cornejo,
Patricio Rodriguez and Belus

along with Chile’s ace, Jaime
Fillol, who will join the team
next week.
Flames,
Penguins
tie, 3-3
PITTSBURGH (UPI) -
Right wing Jean Pronovost
summed it up well for the
Pittsburgh Penguins.
“We were very lucky,”
Pronovost said after the Pen
guins almost dropped an NHL
game against the Atlanta
Flames Wednesday night.
Despite a 3-0 first-period lead,
the Pittsburgh team managed
to nearly bungle the whole
thing and was lucky to wind up
3-3.
“We played bad and we still
got a point,” Pronovost said.
“So we’ll take that and think
about the next one on Satur
day.”
Penguins Coach Ken Schinkel
wasn’t very happy with his
team either.
“We let them off the hook,”
Schinkel said of the Flames.
“We weren’t skating through
the whole game. I don’t know
what it was. And this was such
an important game, too. It
could have put us ahead of
Atlanta. We should have won
and all we do is tie and we had
to fight like ....to keep ahold of.”
Ken Houston and Barry Dibbs
were instrumental in snatching
away the point from the
Penguins. Each scored a goal
early in the third period.
The Flames rallied with
strong checking and two goals
set up by center Tom Lysiak.
The Penguins came out
strong in the first period,
outshooting the Flames 20-10
and getting goals from Bob
Kelly, Pronovost and Simon
Nolet.
It was Kelly’s 20th goal of the
season.
Schinkel, unsatisfied with his
performance, benched Kelly for
long stretches of the final
period.
Kelly objected to being
singled out. But Schinkel said
after the game, “It wasn’t just
Kelly. There were a whole lot
of guys who weren’t going like
they should, but I couldn’t
bench all of them.”
