, Drastic cleaning
I blackens gold
By Polly Cramer
Polly’s Pointers
—-1 have a ring set in gold, and when it
needed cleaning I first soaked it in ammonia and then in
dishwasher formula, and the gold turned black. Is there
some way I could restore the original gold color? -
REGINA.
DEAR REGINA — Perhaps your ring had only a gold
wash on it, and your drastic measures removed the
wash. Take it to a jeweler, tell him what you have used
and then if he has nothing to offer it will doubtless have
to be re-washed with gold. — POLLY.
DEAR POLLY My Pet Peeve is with magazine publishers
who put store redeemable coupons on one side of an in
teresting article that I would enjoy and often pass on to
someone else to read. If that magazine is a favorite. I would
purchase it any way without knowing about the coupon. It is
annoying, however, to see the coupon and then have to cut up
the things you want to read to use it. — LUCRETIA.
DEAR POLLY — A good cotton blanket was badly soiled
with grease, so I sprayed lighter fluid on the spots and then
washed it. Every spot came out so I now use lighter fluid on all
bad grease stains on garments. — MARY T.
DEAR POLLY — Like Mrs. A.M. I, too, had a number of
pretty ash trays I wished to display on the wall so the bottoms
showed. I had the idea of using double sided double-grip tape
on them. This tape is quite a bit thicker than conventional tape
and is designed for hanging or mounting things on the wall.
The weight of my ash trays has not caused the tape to pull
away and the ash trays enhance the wall to make it a conver
sation piece. There are so many decorative ways they can be
arranged so I hope Mrs. A M. has the same luck. — DEB.
(Polly's note—l would check any tape every few weeks to
see if it is holding tightly.)
DEAR POLLY — I have the perfect solution for those who
do not like to wear gloves when they garden. Dig your nails
deep into a bar of soap. When you finish gardening simply
wash your hands and your nails will be as clean as can be.
We love an open fire but they require a lot of tending. We
burn logs but to hold the heat longer some coal added is a help.
We fill medium size bags with coal and from time to time put
some of these on the fire. This makes a much hotter fire and
the bags can be filled ahead of time to be ready to pitch on the
fire when needed. — ANNE.

Dr. Lamb
No cholesterol
in plant foods
By Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D.
DEAR DR. LAMB - Would
you publish a list of foods
which tend to raise
cholesterol level? In other
words, which foods one should
avoid if the cholesterol level is
on the high side.
DEAR READER - There
is no cholesterol in foods of
plant origin. It is only in
animal products. The chief
sources of large amounts of
cholesterol in the diet are egg
yolks, butter fat in butter,
milk, cheese and some organ
meats, especially liver, brains
and sweetbreads.
Meat, fish and poultry all
have about 70 milligrams of
cholesterol in three and one
half ounces (100 grams) raw
weight. You should try to
limit your cholesterol intake
to 300 milligrams a day. By
using fortified skim milk,
buttermilk, uncreamed cot
tage cheese for dairy
products, avoiding the high
cholesterol foods and using
vegetable margarines, you
can still eat quite a bit of the
meat, fish and poultry group
without consuming too much
cholesterol.
Unfortunately there is much
more to keeping the
cholesterol down than just
eliminating the high
cholesterol foods. You need
also to eliminate or avoid
body obesity by diet and exer
cise and you need to limit your
total fat intake of any type and
particularly control saturated
fat intake.
For more information on
the principles of diet to pre
vent heart disease send 50
cents for The Health Letter,
Number 1-3, Diet, Preventing
Atherosclerosis Send a long,
stamped, self-addressed
envelope for mailing. Address
your letter to me in care of
this newspaper, P. O. Box
1551, Radio City Station, New
York, NY 10019.
DEAR DR. LAMB - My
buddies and 1 are having a dis
cussion concerning ulcers,
nerves and high blood
pressure. Which occurs first,
ulcers and then a nervous con
dition and high blood pressure
or a nervous condition and
then an ulcer and high blood
pressure?
DEAR READER - Have
fun. Doctors still argue about
these points, especially in
specific cases and the con
clusions are sometimes no
more enlightened than the
ones you may make.
The problem is that one
can't generalize. Certainly
one can have high blood
pressure and not have any
problems at all with nervous
tension High blood pressure
may be -related to being
overweight, to having kidney
disease or even to having cer
tain hormonal abnormalities
in the body.
Ulcers are often associated
with excessive nervous ten
sion but again we do see them
in people without any clear
evidence of abnormal stress
and we see a lot of people with
lots of stress who have neither
high blood pressure nor ul
cers.
We see people with an in
finite variety of stress reac
tions, nervous disorders and
even psychosis who have
neither medical problem.
We know that when people
are sick from any cause they
may then become nervous,
depressed or emotionally un
stable. Il is pretty depressing
to find out you have a serious
cancer or that you have a
serious heart disease or have
just had a stroke.
So you can’t separate the
physical, chemical and
emotional responses of the
body any more than you can
decide which comes first, the
chicken or the egg.
