Busbee being nice
to all candidates
ATLANTA (UPI) - Gov.
George Busbee has not decided
who he wants in the White
House next year, so he’s being
nice to all contenders —
including the Republican in
cumbent — so they’ll be nice to
Georgia.
And he is still undecided
about signing or vetoing the bill
allowing Sunday drink sales in
Atlanta restaurants, although
he is getting some heavy
pressure from both sides on the
bill.
At his weekly news conferen
ce, the governor said Thursday
he will get involved in the
presidential politicking some
time around the Georgia
primary date May 4. The
candidates will be coming to
town about then, and Busbee
said he will make sure
Georgians know which con
gressmen running for president
have “hurt” Georgia projects
with their votes in committee
or on the floors of Congress.
As an example of the benefits
of neutrality, Busbee said he
and Florida Gov. Reubin Askew
— another formally neutral
governor — sat down with
President Ford for two hours
recently and, despite White
House staff objections, got him
to release some clean-water
money for their states. He said
such persuasion would not be
possible, had he been a strident
critic of the already vulnerable
chief executive.
“We have many things going
on in Congress that we’re
actively involved in, and I don’t
want to do anything that would
hurt Georgia’s chances,” he

said. “I’m sure I’ll be involved
later on, when these candidates
come to Georgia. I’ll be
pointing out to the people
anything they may have done
that has hurt Georgia.”
Busbee said he has received
numerous calls from various
candidates and national news
media reporters wanting to
know what shape former Gov.
Jimmy Carter left him in when
Carter began his own presiden
tial campaigning last year.
Busbee said he politely avoids
criticizing Carter, refusing to
blame his predecessor for the
state’s recurrent financial prob
lems.
Busbee said he was mildly
surprised at how far Carter has
gone on the campaign trail. He
said New England governors
told him at the National
Governor’s Conference in Wash
ington early this week they
expected Carter to get about 31
per cent in New Hampshire —
just 2 per cent more than he
eventually got.
The governor said he will call
down a batch of bills today
which have already cleared the
General Assembly, but that he
does not know if the Sunday
drinking bill will be among
them. He said he is not yielding
to angry entreaties from church
groups who want the bill vetoed
— nor the pleas of hotel and
restaurant owners wanting it
signed to boost their tourist
trade.
He said he will keep his own
counsel and “do what I think is
best for Georgia” despite some
personal reservations about
drinking on Sundays.
Busbee said, however, he will
definitely sign or veto the bill—
not let it become law without
his signature 30 days after the
legislators adjourn next week.

Carter home historic?
ATLANTA (UPI) — The ancestral home of Former
Gov. Jimmy Carter has been turned over to' officials
representing local citizens in east Georgia, on the chance
he may get elected President this year.
Carter’s ancestors migrated from Virginia and the
Carolinas during the 1790 s and build the rock cabin on a
one-acre site in McDuffie County. The structure, which is
presently operated by the Georgia Department of Natural
Resources, was given to the Wrightsboro Quaker
Community Foundation.
Dean case postponed
ATLANTA (UPI) — A traffic court hearing for State
Senator Roscoe Dean has been continued until May 27.
Dean was originally slated to appear Thursday on
charges of driving under the influence, speeding and
running a red light Feb. 3.
However, Robert Harris, solicitor for the dty of
Atlanta, said the Jesup senator’s lawyer requested the
case be put off until after next month’s adjournment of the
General Assembly.
Harris said he inadvertently put May 27 down instead of
March 27, but he has decided to “to leave it” the way it is.
Barwick reports loss
CHAMBLEE, Ga. (UPI) — Sales of $34,783,663 tor E. T.
Barwick Industries Inc., a carpet manufacturer, brought
the firm an unaudited loss of more than $1.5 million
dollars for the third quarter ending this past January.
During the same month in 1975, there was a $5 million
loss on sales totaling more than $35.3 million.
Charles E. Selecman, who heads the Chamblee-based
organization, says the carpet industry’s domestic future
for 1976 appears good. He says most experts are
predicting a 10 to 15 per cent growth rate in carpet
demand.
Two pistols found
SPRINGFIELD, Ga. (UPI) — Effingham County police
have found two .22 caliber pistols buried in mud near the
place where 17-year-old Romie Fields was found shot to
death last week.
Sheriff Lloyd Fulcher said Thursday the pistols were
found buried under about five inches of mud. Authorities
said the pistols apparently were buried when the cars of
investigating officers ran over them.
The weapons are being examined by the State Crime
Lab in Savannah to determine whether they were used in
the killing, he said.
Ryland Beasley, 31, and his wife, Frieda, 37, of
Charleston, S.C., have been charged with murder in the
death of the Rincon youth. The couple told police they had
picked up Fields and another youth as hitchhikers last
Sunday while driving along Georgia 21 near Rincon.
Marijuana dropped
ELBERTON, Ga. (UPI) — About 1,000 pounds of
marijuana was discovered Thursday by Elbert County
authorities in a wooded area about 16 miles south of
Elberton.
Elbert County Sheriff Adger Moore found the the two
bales of pot knee-deep in some mud Thursday after
receiving a tip that “there was some activity in the area.”
He speculated it had been dropped from an airplane.
Moore said the cache was “the most marijuana I’ve
ever seen in one place.” He said the grass was packed “so
tight you could barely tear it apart with your hands.”
He discounted the possibility that someone was
attempting to airdrop the marijuana into the county for a
clandestine pickup.
