scores 50 points
By United Press International
David Thompson, who forsook
the National Basketball As
sociation for an estimated $3
million contract with the
Denver Nuggets, reeled off a
career high 50 points Friday
night in pacing his team to a
140-116 romp over the San
Antonio Spurs.
Denver, which has gradually
been turned into a first-rate
basketball town over the last
few years, has gone ecstatic
this season with the presence of
Thompson and perhaps the best
basketball team in the country.
The Nuggets, 44-15, own not
only a six-game lead in the
ABA but have the best won-loss
record in the pros. Even the
torrid NBA defending champion
Golden State Warriors, another
run-and-gun style team with a
43-16 record, might have
trouble staying with the streak
ing Nuggets.
Thompson made his first nine
shots and finished by hitting 17-
of-20 from the field and 16-of-19
free throws. He also had four

CINCINNATI (UPI) - Xavi
er University basketball coach
Tay Baker, who has revived the
Musketeers’ program, was re
warded Friday with a new
three-year contract.
It marked the first time in
Xavier history that a basketball
coach was given a multiyear
contract as a followup to an
initial pact.
“I’m tremendously pleased to
accept,” said Baker.
The 13-10 Musketeers have
three games remaining, and a
victory in any of the three
would guarantee Xavier’s first
winning season in 12 years.

He said there is apparently
just one minor' flaw that is
plaguing his swing, but he can’t
figure out what it is.
“If I don’t find it and correct

dearly,” he said.
Nicklaus had a long day,
getting up at 5:30 to play the
final two holes of the first round
that were suspended when
darkness halted play Thursday
night.
A birdie four and a routine
par moved him into a tie for the
first-round lead with Fred Marti
at 66 and then the “Golden
Bear” turned around and fired
an erratic 70.
“I hit too many bad shots—
four of them—and everyone of
them cost me a stroke," said
Nicklaus, looking for his first
win of the year. Marti shot a 74
Friday and was tied for 12th at
140.
Snead, like January, said he
was having trouble with his
driver. His problem was that his
drives weren’t going far
enough.
