UCLA Bruins
on the move
By United Press International
Marques Johnson said the
UCLA Bruins changed their
attitude after Oregon disman
tled them, 65-45, last week and
Friday night the new Bruins
were awesome.
They clobbered California,
113-03, to run their Pacific-8
Conference record to 10-2 and
give them a one-game lead over
Oregon State and Washington,
who must face each other in a
crucial battle today at
Corvallis, Ore.
Johnson was the key as he hit
all 11 of his shots to set a
Harmon Gym record. The old
mark of Mor-9 was set by Cal’s
Earl Shultz in the Bears’ glory
days of 1960.
“Losing that game was a big
blow to our ego,” Johnson said.
“You could see the change of
attitude in practice this week.
There was no horsing around. It
was very businesslike.’’
Cal Coach Dick Edwards said
of the seventh-ranked Bruins
that “without a doubt, this was

UCLA hit 66 per cent of its
shots in rolling to a 61-38
halftime lead and coasted home
from there. The Bruins wound
up with a 57 per cent shooting
mark.
UCLA Coach Gene Bartow
said “if we keep playing this
well, we’ll be hard to beat. But it
is always easy to look good
when you shoot well."
Johnson, who wound up with a
game high 27 points, helped the
Bruins jump to a 15-5 lead and
had 17 points in the first half. He
got a lot of help from Richard
Washington, who hit 11-of-19
shots and 22 points.

Re: a recent claim by shortstop Chris Speier that
he was turned down flat when he offered to help
promote the San Francisco Giants, publicity director
Art Santo Domingo rebuts: “It has always been ex
tremely difficult to get Chris to attend group func
tions, even in view of the foct that we pay him to go.
Last fall when I prepared a questionnaire for players
about my proposed winter program of appearances,
Chris didn’t even have the courtesy to fill one out and
return it to me.”
Q. I have recently read two magazine articles about two
women who claim to have knocked out men in bouts. Is there
any truth to these stories? is it possible for a woman to KO a
man in the ring? I am 22, athletic and very strong. I would like
to try my hand at boxing but do not know how to go about it.
Where can I contact the groups to find out more about it? —
Terry Anne Taylor, Springfield, Mo.
/
lU<9
We don’t read the same magazines, Terry. Can a woman KO
a man? Happens all the time, but not usually sanctioned. If
you’re really interested in pursuing this, contact your state
boxing commission. In Missouri, which doesn’t sanction
women’s boxing, it’s in Jefferson City. I contacted Eddie
Dames (fitting, huh) of the Commission in St. Louis, and he’s
going to look into it.
Q. In the recent election of Robin Roberts and Bob Lemon to
the Hall of Fame, it was stated they were the 122nd and 123rd
members. My records show them to be the 152nd and 153rd.
Please explain the difference. — Barney Bernard, Sacramen
to, Calif.
They are Nos. 122 and 123 selected from the player ranks.
There are also 28 more men in the Hall of Fame, “selected for
meritorious service” — such as Kenesaw Mountain Landis,
Casey Stengel and Satchel Paige.
Q. Can you tell me how they determine who would pick first
in the football draft between Oakland and Los Angeles since
both were knocked out in their conference championship
games? — Danny Nicholas, Pleasant Hill, Calif.
Position in the draft (whenever they get around to the next
one) is determined by regular season record. The Rams were
12-2; the Raiders were 11-3. The Raiders get to pick ahead of
the Rams.
