Shredded lettuce Gnitm, Ga.
Y* saves mayonnaise
By Polly Cramer V>4 1 V ■ ■
Inflation Fighter
DEAR POLLY — We make our own mayonnaise and
I was always vaguely troubled (waste not, want not)
about the mayonnaise clinging to the beaters and mixing
bowl after I had scraped all I could scrape into a jar.
While preparing lettuce for a salad it dawned on me that
I could shred some lettuce into the bowl where the
mayonnaise was made, give the beaters a few turns and
perhaps get to use every drop. It worked. When mayon
naise is made there is usually enough for a salad base or
to add to a tossed salad. —AGNES B.
DEAR POLLY — Since we are all trying to save in every
way we can I want to send my special thanks to the reader who
suggested giving clothes an extra spin before putting them in
the dryer. Even heavy bath towels are then thoroughly dried on
only the “no press” cycle.
To save fuel I have changed the way I do my laundry and for
the most part find the new methods are actually easier than
the old. Even in matched sets the dryers hold larger loads than
the washers do. Most of us can save by dividing three washer
loads into two dryer loads and save one complete drying cycle.
First launder the heaviest towels, etc. and start them dry
ing. Next wash the “in-between" (cotton underwear, no-iron
linens, etc.) Add about half of this washer load to the dryer.
When all are dried and the machine is empty start drying the
remainder of the “in-betweens.” Launder the “no press”
clothes and add to the dryer. Since I have never found away to
divide my laundry into less than three washer loads this is
really a saver. Os course, all the laundry is done in cold water.
While on the subject the only energy the next hint will save
is your own frustration. If you have tried practically
everything advertised plus anything else you can think of and
still have trouble with that “ring around the collar” and
dinginess, try an extra rinse between soak and wash cycles. If
you add bleach to the soak and borax to the wash you will be
amazed at the results.
Collars also need the extra wash. This worked on an old
towel that was so dingy that for a year or so I had been using it
as a bath mat. It came out so snowy white that my good
towels looked dingy by comparison-that is until they got the
same treatment. They were washed in cold water.

Dr. Lamb
Hyperventilation
I is her problem
By Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D.
DEAR DR. LAMB — Some
months ago my husband un
derwent surgery and I had a
severe shock when I was told
that he might not recover.
Since then he has progressed
very well but I haven’t. I
developed tingling in my
hands and feet and up my legs
with some weakness. I have
feelings of hot and cold with
perspiration and cold spots in
my scalp. I awaken from bad
dreams with a jarring start. I
have loss of appetite and some
loss of weight.
I visited three physicians
with no results. Extensive X
rays, cardiograms and all the
tests failed to show anything
and one doctor prescribed
Valium. I was referred to
another doctor who diagnosed
my trouble as hyperventila
tion and he sent me to a
neurologist. The neurologist
gave me extensive tests and
suggested I breathe into a
paper bag when I had these
spells. I did but this has
helped very little. Is there
anything you can suggest that
I can do that will relieve me
other than drugs? I am very
nervous from the tingling and
from the weakness in my legs.
DEAR READER — In view
of your story and the ex
aminations that you’ve had, I
would suspect that you do not
have any serious illness.
Hyperventilation means over
breathing. With it a person
blows off too much carbon
dioxide and it's fairly stan
dard to tell a patient to
breathe into a brown paper
bag (not a plastic bag).
Laboratory analysis has
shown that chemically this
may not always do too much
but it does seem to help some
people. Others as in your case,
get very little benefit from it.
Your hyperventilation is no
doubt related to an anxiety
reaction which you are ex
periencing. And that is also
the explanation of some of
your other symptoms. The
anxiety reaction was no doubt
triggered off by the shock that
you had from your husband’s
acute illness. Getting over it
is not always that easy.
I think you should ask your
doctor to refer you to a psy
chiatrist. Let’s face it, the
situational anxiety response
that you are having is basical
ly an emotional problem. You
need help for that just as
much as if you had a broken
leg. You would be surprised
how much good you can get
out of quality professional
counseling in such situations.
Some -of these situational
problems can be relieved
rather quickly. There are a
variety of medicines which
help, depending on which kind
of emotional response a per
son has experienced. The
medicines that are available
certainly extend beyond the
range of prescribing Valium
alone or any other just simple
tranquilizer.
You’ll get a lot more good
out of some professional
counseling than you will out of
breathing into a brown paper
bag in your particular in
stance. It may help improve
your life thereafter. Why take
tranquilizers or medicines to
dull your responses to
something when you have a
good opportunity with
professional counseling to
resolve the situation and free
yourself from medicines en
tirely?
