Alabama clinches
at least SEC tie
United Press International
Alabama clinched at least a
tie for the Southeastern Confer
ence basketball championship
Monday night while Vanderbilt
was knocked from contention
and Tennessee almost was
eliminated.
The seventh-ranked Tide ral
lied from seven points back to
beat Georgia 87-76 for its 14th
win in 16 SEC games. Alabama,
which has had to share the SEC
title the past two years, can
win its first clear-cut champion
ship in 20 years with a victory
over Kentucky Saturday.
“This is one of the biggest
wins ever,” said coach C.M.
Newton after the Monday night
victory. “This could give us a
chance to play for the national
championship. We’re going to
try to finish it ourselves and
not depend on anybody else.”
Mississippi gave the Tide
some help Monday night,
eliminating third-place Vander
bilt from the title race 81-72,
the Rebels’ first SEC win in 16
tries this season. Vandy now is
11-5 in the conference with two
games to play and its only hope
is a tie for second with
Tennessee.
The 13th-ranked Vols almost
joined Vandy on the also-ran
list Monday night, but Bernard
King sank a deflected pass with
three seconds to play to give
Tennessee a 78-76 victory over
Mississippi State. Tennessee,
13-4, ends its season against
Georgia Saturday and, barring
a collapse by Alabama, will get
an at-large bid to the NCAA
playoffs.
The Tide, which shared the
1975 crown with Kentucky and
the 1974 title with Vanderbilt,
gets the SEC berth in the
NCAA Mideast Regionals.
Kentucky, which has fallen on
hard times after losing to
UCLA in the NCAA finals last
year, downed Louisiana State
85-70 Monday night to move
into a fourth place tie with
Auburn at 9-7. Auburn and
Florida were idle Monday
night.
In the only independent
action in the Southeast Monday
night, Jacksonville beat

Georgia Southern 77-65 to give

season. No games are sche
duled in the Southeast tonight.
Leon Douglas and Anthony
Murray scored 20 points each
and Douglas also grabbed 20
rebounds in Alabama’s victory
over Georgia. Murray scored 10
of his points in the last six
minutes when the Tide rallied
from a 65-72 deficit to outscore
the Bulldogs 22-4. Jacky Dorsey
paced Georgia, now 7-10 in
sixth place, with 22 points and
Walter Daniels added 20.
Vandy fell behind Ole Miss in
the first half but took a nine
point lead in the second half
only to fall behind again at 58-
57 with 10 minutes left. The
Rebels stayed ahead the rest of
the way to snap a 15-game SEC
losing streak. Ronnie Davis and
John Billups had 20 points each
for Ole Miss while Jeff Fosnes
had 26 and Butch Feher 22 for
the Commodores.
King scored 33 points and
Ernie Grunfeld 26 for Tennes
see, which saw a 13-point lead
evaporate into a 76-76 tie with
1:26 to play. The Vols played
for the last shot but Grunfeld’s
pass to King was deflected onto
the backboard. However,
State’s Wally Peck fell down
making a stab for the pass and
King grabbed the ball and sank
the shot uncontested. Ray
White led State with 23 points.
Jack Givens had 33 points
and Mike Phillips 18 in
Kentucky’s win over LSU,
whose Kenny Higgs got 20
points. Marvin Lloyd scored 27
points and Kent Glover 20 to
lead Jacksonville past Georgia
Southern.
