He listed pitchers Norm

Chosen to the third team
were Tennessee’s Ernie Grun

The first team clearly was a
consensus choice, its five
members far outdistancing the
rest of the field in the balloting
of sports writers and sport
scasters from across the nation.
May and Dantley tied for
most points in the balloting
with 298 each. Voters were

May and Benson led the top
ranked Hoosiers to their second
straight undefeated regular
season, without nearly as
impressive a supporting cast as
the previous year, putting more
of a burden on the two big men.
May, a 6-7 senior from
Sandusky, Ohio, has averaged
23 points a game for the
Hoosiers this .season and has
been the player to whom they
turn in tough situations.
Benson, a 6-foot-11, 245-pound
center from New Castle, Ind.,
has averaged 17 points a game.
The combined rebounding of
May and Benson has enabled to
Hoosiers to maintain their
devastating fast break.
Lucas broke Tom McMillen’s
career scoring record at
Maryland and averaged 20
points a game this season.
Lucas, a 6-3 guard from
Durham, N.C., also is one of
the better collegiate tennis
players in the country and won
the Atlantic Coast Conference
singles title as a sophomore.
Washington has led the
Bruins in scoring this season
points for the Bullets and
Freddie Colbert made four.
Todd Thacker and Bobby
Crawley scored four points for
the Braves.

with a 20-point average. Wa
shington, a native of Portland,

All-America last season and
was voted the most valuable
player in the NCAA champion
ship.
Dantley, who has been in the
national limelight since his
freshman year at Notre Dame,
averaged 29 points and 10
rebounds a game this season.
The muscular 6-5 forward from
Hyattsville, Md., probably will
become UPl’s ninth three-time
All-America next season if he
elects to return for his senior
year.

Baseball makes

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.

both Marvin Miller, executive
director of the Players’ As
sociation, and Lee MacPhail,
president of the American
League, issue fairly optimistic
statements on the same day.
“I would say it was a
constructive meeting,” said
Miller after the two sides met
for almost five hours.”
“We made some technical
progress,” said MacPhail. “I
hope we’re closer to a
settlement, but it doesn’t mean
it’s going to happen in the next
few days.”
The major stumbling block in
the dispute remains the reserve
system. The owners have
suggested that veterans of eight
years be granted free agent

J. C. Snead had
to admire Nicklaus
LAUDERHILL, Fla. (UPI) — J. C. Snead had to admire
the way Jack Niddaus was playing, even if it did coat him
more than 125,000.
Don’t pianists admire Artur Rubenstein? Don’t
violinists admire Jasha Heiftz?
Niddaus, the finest craftsman in the game of golf,
especially among the modern day golfers, played the final
round of the Tournament Players Championship with all
the precision of a fine musician giving a concert in
Carnegie Hall.
Even Niddaus, his own harshest critic, was pleased
with the 7-under-par 65 Monday that enabled him to win
the TPC and its 160,000 top prize by a three-stroke margin
over runnerup Snead.
“I felt I played extremely well,” Niddaus understated.
“I only hit two shots that didn’t please me.”
Those two shots came after he had victory in the bag.
Niddaus jumped into a commanding four-stroke lead with
a 4Moot eagle putt at the par five 15th and was actually
just playing it safe the rest of the way in.
“All I was trying to do was stay out of trouble,” he
explained. “I knew he (Snead) couldn’t catch me unless I
goofed up.”
Niddaus beat around the bush all week when pressed
for how much he wanted to win the |300,000 TPC. He kept
refusing to classify it as a “major” championship, to put it
in the class with the Masters, the U.S. and British opens,
and the PGA.
But his wife, Barbara, was never fooled for a moment.
“I’ve never seen Jack any more charged up,” she said
earlier in the tournament.
Niddaus says people should wait “at least 10 more
years” before calling the TPC a “major” championship.
But, in the meanwhile, he isn’t taking any chances.
Niddaus holds the record for the most “major”
championships. He has won five Masters, four PGAs,
three UJS. Opens, two British Opens and two U.S.
Amateurs. That adds up to 16, three more than the
previous record held by the late Bobby Jones.
He’s also won two of the three TPCs that have been
played and would like very much to have those count
toward his “majors” total one of these days.
Jack Nicklaus has won 59 U.S. tour events and more
than |2.6 million. That doesn’t count his many foreign
victories nor the money he has earned in non-tour outings.
But he insists that his main goal these days is to win so
many “majors” that no other golfer can come along and
take his record away from him. That’s why he skips the
tournaments that precede the “majors,” using that week
to prepare his game for the particular course where the
next “major” is being held.
He says he doesn’t feel that strongly about the TPC. But
he says the TPC has the format, and the field, to achieve
“major” status with time.
“It’s just a question of time.”
It was recognition that the TPC probably will become a
“major” in time that brought out the best in Jade
NicHaus. And, as he has proven so many times, when he
is a this best, he is just about unbeatable.
