Avondale eliminates
Griffin, 51-40
The Griffin girls were
eliminated from the Georgia
Triple-A Tournament last night
but not before putting up a
gallant battle against Avondale,
the 7-AAA champions.
The final score was Avondale
51 and Griffin 40.
The game was closer than the
final score shows.
Griffin was ahead 11-10 after
one period and 21-19 at the half.
Avondale broke the game
open with a strong third period.
Griffin made three turnovers
early in the quarter and
Avondale converted the
mistakes into six points.

Tascar Williams, principal of
Griffin High, and Coach Max
Dowis, athletic director, today
recommended that Bobby York,
a former Milner High player, be
named Boys’ basketball coach,
effective July 1.
Coach York currently is
basketball coach at Douglas
County High and has compiled
an impressive record there.
When Coach York took over at
Douglas County, the Tigers had
not had a winning season in five
years.
Under Coach York, the team
was 6-19 the first year, 25-3 the
second and 16-8 this season.
He won the 5-AAA champion-

Griffin 214.
The 7-AAA championship
were protecting a four point
lead deep into the fourth. Griffin
had a chance to slice the lead to
two points.
The local girls missed the
opportunity and Avondale
opened up a comfortable lead
when Griffin attempted to apply
pressure.
Coach Harvey Oglesby said
his team missed five layups in
the first half, which if made,
would have given Griffin a
substantial lead.
Retha Daniels scored 17

points in the first half. Sheila

below her average.
The game was the last one for

LOS ANGELES—The Los Angeles Dodgers traded outfielder Willie Crawford (r, in ’74
photo) to St. Louis yesterday for the Cardinals’ second baseman Ted Sizemore (1 in ’75
photo). Crawford, a 12-year veteran, came to the Dodgers out of high school and has a
lifetime batting average of .268. Sizemore was rookie of the year in 1969 with the Dodgers
before they traded him to the Cards. No cash was involved in the trade. (UPI)

in SAC tourney
SAVANNAH, Ga. (UPI) -
League champion Armstrong
State College is favored to win
the South Atlantic Conference
basketball tournament this
week in Savannah, but West
Georgia coach Roger Kaiser
says his Braves can knock the
Pirates off.
“We feel like we beat them
before, we can beat them
again,” said Kaiser whose
squad finished second to the
Savannah school in regular
season conference play.
Armstrong and West Georgia
split their two game series and
the home team lost both times.
The Pirates defeated West
Georgia at Carrollton Jan. 10,
but then lost to the Braves at
home in Savannah 101-97 Feb.
9.
Both schools got off to slow
starts when the season opened.
Armstrong won only two of its
first nine games and the
Braves dropped eight of their
first 12 contests.
But they got hot in the last
half of the season. The Pirates,
13-11 on the year, won 11 of
their last 15 games, while West
McWhorter criticizes
NCAA coaching rule
ATLANTA (UPI) - South
eastern Conference Commis
sioner Boyd McWhorter says an
outside organization like the
NCAA has no business deter
mining institutional budget
matters for universities.
McWhorter criticized an
NCAA rule limiting football
coaching staffs to eight fulltime
assistants and four part-time
aides.
“I consider it not only an
institutional prerogative but an
institutional responsibility to
live within its budget,” he said
Tuesday, adding it was not up
to an outside organization to
make decisions on institutional
budget matters.
McWhorter spoke during the
opening day of a semi-annual
SEC meeting.
He said the SEC would sign a
three-year pact today to send
its football champion to the
Sugar Bowl.
The agreement, said
McWhorter, calls for the SEC
entry to get $750,000 per year,
far above recent Sugar Bowl
payoffs. It will be divided
among the league schools.

league championship, the win

Marshall feuding
with Mich. State
EAST LANSING, Mich.
(UPI) — Los Angeles Dodgers
pitcher Mike Marshall says he
will conduct his spring training
in a Michigan State University
sports facility — no matter how
many times he is arrested.
The outspoken former Cy
Young Award-winner already
faces a March 10 arraignment
on charges stemming from two
recent arrests at the building
and he has been banned from
the premises.
Marshall says he will be back
anyway.
“If you allow even trivial
injustice to continue, then the
injustice will grow until it
;a;.
Traded
Georgia knocked off 12 of their
last 13 foes to end the season
with a 16-9 slate.
But Armstrong coach Bill
Alexander says regular season
records don’t count at the SAC
tournament “when everybody
wants their chance to go to the
nationals.”
“I don’t think people through
out the state realize just how
competitive this conference is. I
don’t think you can rule
anybody out.,” he said.
Armstrong won the tourna
ment last year beating West
Georgia 74-72 in overtime and
Alexander says his squad can
do it again. “We know we are a
capable team,” he said. “I
think the key is to get ourselves
ready mentally.”
West Georgia took the tour
ney in 1974 when it was played
at their home court in
Carrollton. This is the second
year it will be held in
Savannah’s Civic Center.
Armstrong and West Georgia
will get first-round byes when
the tourney openson Thursday
with Valdosta State playing
Southern Tech and Columbus
between the two will get the
New Orleans bid. If the two
teams did not play in the
regular season, the team which
played in the bowl most
recently would lose the bid.
And if neither team has been
to the bowl, the Sugar Bowl
Committee would make the
choice.
“There will be no vote in the
SEC on who will go,” said
McWhorter. “If they are going
to be mad, I want them mad at
the someone else not within the
league.”
In other action Tuesday,
McWhorter announced a one
game playoff will be held
March 10 in Baton Rouge, La.,
if Alabama and Tennessee
should tie for the league
basketball title. Alabama would
have to lose its remaining
games at Kentucky and Van
derbilt and the Vols would have
to win their finale with Georgia
to bring that about.
New Auburn Coach Doug
Barfield joined McWhorter in
critizing the cutback in the size
of coaching staffs. He said it
had caused real headaches,
especially for a new coach
trying to put together a staff.
“We wanted to hire a few
new people and we had some
contaminates the entire sys
tem," said Marshall, a gradu
ate assistant in Michigan
State's Physical Education De
partment.
“I will be in there tomorrow
at the regular time to use the
facility. And they may arrest
me again if they like. I will
continue to use the facility and
get arrested until they agree to
have an appropriate hearing on
this.”
Marshall has been feuding for
the past four years with
Intramural Director Harris F.
Beeman over whether he must
reserve the turf arena, which
also is used for tennis and
basketball.
College going against Augusta
College.
Semi-final action will be held
Friday with Armstrong taking
on the winner of the Augusta-
Columbus game and West
Georgia meeting the victor of
the Valdosta-Southern Tech
contest. The consolation and
championship games will be
held Saturday night.
Final league standings for the
regular season were Armstrong
State, 8-2 in conference play,
13-11 overall; West Georgia, 7-3,
16-9; Valdosta State 5-5, 11-12;
Augusta College, 5-5, 19-9;
Columbus College, 4-6, 14-10,
and Southern Tech, 1-9,4-17.
The top offensive team was
West Georgia, averaging 81.4
points per contest for the year.
Armstrong State was the top
defensive team, holding oppo
nents to 69.1 points a game.
The league’s leading scorer
was Armstrong’s Sam Berry,
who averaged 23.0 points a
game on the year. Armstrong
also had the leading rebounder
in Wayne “Crow” Armstrong,
who pulled down an average
11.0 rebounds per contest.
