1,000 pounds of marijuana into
the county last weekend.
Sheriff Bob Benson said
Tuesday U.S. Customs Bureau
agents want to fly the

county airport but he is against
it

County,” Benson said.
No arrests have been made
since police found about 125
pounds of marijuana near the
plane Saturday morning.
The craft is registered to
Rebel Aviation, Inc. of Atlanta,
police said, and was reported
stolen Monday by the com
pany’s attorney. Benson said
the firm was a “Georgia
corporation in the process of
being set up,” and is merely
seeking to retrieve the plane.
Sgt. Charles Durham said the
plane made a pre-dawn landing
Saturday. Police later discov
ered five bales of pot, weighing
about 125 pounds, lying along a
road near the airport, he said.
The plane was empty except
for scattered shreds of marijua
na.
“We’re guessing at least 1,000
pounds were inside,” Durham
said. He speculated the five
bales had fallen off or from
inside a truck that met the
plane and its crew.
Benson identified the plane’s
owner as Dewey Nabors of
Atlanta. Federal Aviation Ad-
ministration officials said
George Powell applied to have
the plane registered in the
name of Rebel Aviation Inc. on
Feb. 16.
He wanted new bus to test
CLEVELAND (UPI) - A
Cleveland man who stole a
Greyhound bus Tuesday and a
got help from a suburban police
officer when it broke down
finally was caught when he
went back to try to steal another
bus, police said.
Police said Beachwood Police
A Georgia Bureau of Investi
gation spokesman said agents
found several fingerprints in
the plane which “have not been
fully identified.”
Lt. William Gers called a tow
trade for the suspect, 22, when
the bus stalled in nearby
Beachwood. Gers said the
suspect rode back to the
Greyhound garage and then left
saying he was going to see the
supervisor about getting anoth
er bus for his “shuttle run.”

Fires blister state
MACON, Ga. (UH) - The
Georgia Forestry Commission,
reacting to more than a
thousand wildfires across the
state since Sunday, has called
for a moratorium on outdoor
burning until a general rainfall
relieves the fire danger.
Commission Director Ray
Shirley Tuesday said 238
wildfires had burned through
757 forest and open acres
during the day, adding to the
total of 1,117 wildfires which
have swept more than 5,000
acres this week.
Trash and field burnings
were responsible for most of
the fires, which have been
concentrated along the coast
and in the mountain regions of
the state, he said.
The hazardous conditions
resulted from the extreme
dryness of February, which had
only about one-fourth the
normal four-inch rainfall for
the month, he said, and there
