Crime roundup
Burglary charges pile up
Three Atlanta burglar
suspects arrested two weeks
ago tor breaking into homes in
Pike, Lamar and Upson
Counties also have been
charged with burglarizing three
Spalding County residences.
About SI,OOO worth of mer
chandise taken in the Spalding
burglaries has been recovered.
Spalding Sheriff Dwayne
Gilbert said the three suspects,
Frankie J. Gieger, 24; Gwen
dolyn Margaret Cole, 23; and
. Patricia Diane Perkins, 23, all
of 348 Atlanta avenue, Atlanta,
were accused of the March 23
burglaries at the Spalding
County residences of Billy R.
McElroy on Route Four, Mike
Clark of Route Four, and
Theodore Kuzma, Dutchman
road.
The stolen items included
television sets, guns, clocks,
radios, a camera, meats and
other articles. Some were
recovered.

in a raid of a house in DeKalb
County and from persons who
had bought the stolen goods.
Lawmen said the suspects
would break into a home after
knocking on the door to make
sure no one was inside.
The three presently are being
held in Pike and Lamar County
jails in connection with
numerous break-ins there.
They were arrested two
weeks ago at Taylor and 15th
streets after Spalding Deputy
David Taylor had spotted their
auto which had been described
in a police lookout.
Sheriff Gilbert said his
department received a report of
another house burglary yester
day.
Tim Thomas of Yamacraw
road complained someone pried
open the rear door of his
residence and stole an AM-FM
eight track stereo, two portable
televisions and a CB radio.
Their total value was around
$1,000) he said.
City police were investigating
a burglary at the home of Eddie
Holmes, 123 Brawner street. A
tape player, 20 tapes, two
speakers and a pair of shoes
were among the items taken.
Mrs. Ruth Gary, 669 Brook
circle, reported the theft of her
mink stole from the Elks Club
Saturday night. The fur was
worth about S6OO and was taken
between 8 p.m. and 1:30 a.m.,
police said.
A set of golf clubs was stolen
from Earl J. Bobier’s car while
it was parked at the Oxford
Shop of Beatty Auto Parts.
Bobier’s address if 1722 Ridge
street.
Ollie Mae Lockett, 711 Anne
street, told police a man took
S2O from her purse and fled. She
said the incident happened at
her apartment.
Police were looking for a thief
who fled the scene after
wrecking a car he had stolen
earlier.
The auto was reported stolen
Sunday morning by Nellie Ruth
Willis, 629 Hallyburtofl street.
The 1968 Chevrolet later was
found after being involved in a
traffic accident. The driver had
fled the scene, police said.
Someone stole 50 five-dollar
bills from the cash register at
Top Dollar Store. Police said
the $250 was taken Friday.
Mrs. Betty Hortman reported
her purse was stolen while she
was at the Tendrick Sporting
Goods Co., 1447 North Ex
pressway. It contained about
five dollars and credit cards.
Student
delegates
announced
Lee Duffey, Jackson High
School, and Donna Eason,
McDonough Christian
Academy, have been chosen as
delegates to the Rural
Electrification Youth Tour of
Washington, D. C. The tour will
be conducted in June.
These students were winners
of a public speaking contest
sponsored by The Central
Georgia EMC. The contest was
held at the EMC’s annual
“Youth Night” banquet in
Jackson.
Contestants from five schools
in the co-op area were in
competition for the tour. They
were Juliet Rumble, Mary
Person High School, Forsyth,
who spoke on “Electricity And
The Future”; Donna Cook,
Indian Springs Academy,
Jackson, runner-up, whose
subject was “REA: Into The
Light”; Mary Stephens, Griffin
High School, who presented “A
Bright Future For Electricity”;
and the winners, Lee Duffey
and Donna Eason, whose
subjects were “REA: Pride Os
The Past — Hope For The
Future,” and “The Answer +
Nuclear Power.”
Serving as judges for the
contest were Ivan Winsett,
Executive Director, Georgia
Electrification Council, Athens;
Mrs. Charlotte Crawley, head of
the English Department at
Piedmont Academy, Mon
ticello; and Mrs. Cecelia
Parrott, English teacher at
Piedmont.
Also appearing on the
program was Ricky Long of
Jackson who was a winner last
year. He gave an interesting
slide presentation of the 1975
Youth Tour. Mrs. Martha Lam
and Dr. Paul Davis spoke
briefly about the EMC essay
program at McDonough
Christian Academy.
Benson Ham, Co-op Attorney,
presided over the meeting with
T. F. Freeman, Co-op President
giving the Welcome. Mrs.
Elizabeth Watkins, Member
Services Director, introduced
the special guests who were
EMC essay contest winners,
their parents and teachers.

Mr. Tinley
Mr. Ashley Clay Tinley, 82, of
107 Third avenue, Akin Sub
division, suffered a sudden
attack Saturday afternoon and
was pronounced dead on arrival
at the Griffin-Spalding Hospital.
He was a retired employe of
the Real Driveraway Co. Mr.
Tinley was a native of
Watkinsville, Oconee County,
Ga. He had made his home in
Spalding County for 46 years
and was a member of DeVotie
Baptist Church.
Mr. Tinely was a member of
the Woodmen of the World.
Mr. and Mrs. Tinley observed
their 60th wedding anniversary
in February.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Tannie Bell Jones Tinley;
four sons, J. C. Tinley, Jack
Tinley, William C. Tinley, all of
Griffin; Wilson Tinley of
Hampton; nine grandchildren,
six great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
this morning at 11 o’clock in
Haisten’s Chapel. The Rev.
Bennie Rhodes officiated.
Burial was in Oak Hill
cemetery.
Mrs. Person
Mrs. Viola Person of
Jonesboro, formerly of Griffin,
died this morning at the
Westbury Nursing home in
McDonough.
She was the mother of Mrs.
Opel King.

A bill by Lona Triplett and
Anne Cook is an act to reform
the state’s parole system.
Patti Farr and Sallie Jordan’s
bill is to establish a maximum
amount of time a train may
block a railroad crossing.
Melinda Hattaway and Susan
Kent submitted a bill to protect
medical doctors, nurses and
paramedics.
Mark Hardcastle and Dee
Hunter drew up a bill to provide
teacher pay raises.
The Youth assembly is
sponsored by the State TMCA.
The press representative is
Chris Fletcher.
The assembly will be held
Thursday, Friday and Satur

Bobby Riggs’
son is dead
MANOR HAVEN, N.Y.,
(UPI) — The unemployed son of
Bobby Riggs, the flamboyant
tennis hustler, has been found
dead in a Long Island rooming
house, authorities reported.
Nassau County police said
James Riggs, 22, was found
dead in his bed at a Long Island
address by his roommate
Saturday evening.
Police said a “narcotic
implement” was found nearby
the body. But they would not say
if Riggs’ death was caused by
drug use. Homicide detectives
said there was no indication
Riggs was slain.
The spokesman for the county
medical examiner’s office said
the body was identified Sunday
by James’ brother, John. An
autopsy had been completed,
the spokesman said, but the
cause of death was “pending
until toxicological and micro
scopic examinations could be
made.”
Mr. Shivers
Mr. W. M. Shivers, Jr., af
fectioately known as Junior, 55,
died at the Veterans Hospital in
East Orange, New Jersey
Sunday night after an illness of
several weeks.
He was a retired employe of
Atlanta General Depot. Mr.
Shivers was a member of the
Church of Christ.
Survivors include two
daughters, Mrs. Barbara
Kallinderis of Astoria, New
York and Mrs. Gloria Wilson of
Annandale, Va.
The body will arrive in Griffin
tonight. Funeral services will
be announced by Haisten
Funeral Home of Griffin.

Hammock Chambers of 11
Spalding street died early this
morning at her home.
She was born in Rockdale
County and had lived in Griffin
38 years.
She was a member of
Plainview Baptist Church and
was a retired employe of Griffin
Garment.
Survivors include her
daughter, Miss Jackie Ann
Chambers of Griffin; four sons,
Jerry Lee Chambers, James
William Chambers, Joe Thomas
Chambers, Johnny Ralph
Chambers, all of Griffin; three
sisters, Mrs. Gladys Bass and
Miss Jewell Hammock, both of
Griffin, Mrs. Joann Taylor of
Lilburn, Ga.; three grand
children, several nieces and
nephews.

Mrs. Melvinia Green of 118
Quincy street died this morning
at her home after an illness of a
few weeks. She was a lifelong
resident of Griffin and a
member of the Archia Baptist
Church.
Survivors include a cousin,
Mrs. Pauline Lusier of Griffin.

star in play
at Gordon
Two Griffinites have been
cast as leading characters in
Gordon Junior College’s spring
production of the Broadway
musical “Oklahoma.”
David Norris, the son of Mr.
and Mrs. A1 Norris, will portray
the dancing and singing Will
Parker and Vicki Perdue,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom
Perdue, will play his sweetheart
Ado Annie.
“Oklahoma” will be per
formed on May 13-16 at 8:15
p.m. in Alumni Memorial Hall
