New immigration
The New Immigration,
which historians usually
date from 1885 to 1914, was
distinguished from earlier
and later periods of im
migration by the relatively
larger number of im
migrants and by the coun
tries of their origin. Before
the 1880 s most immigrants
had come from Great Bri
tain, Ireland and Northern
Europe. From the 1880 s to
1914, a majority of the im-

Women have been virtually
excluded from top decision
making jobs on the staffs of the
1976 presidential candidates,
according to a survey by the
Capitol Hill Women’s Political
Caucus.
Hie survey, which the caucus
promised to detail today, found
that 69 of more than 400 paid
campaign jobs existing in
March were positions of power.

schools, libraries and other
institutions.

volunteer — wield any signifi
cant influence in these cam
paigns.

women hold a greater share of
the middle-level and support
positions in the presidential
campaigns.
“The doors to the inner
councils of political decision
making are closed to women on
