The Griffin High track team
finished second Saturday in the
Columbus Relays.
The relays were won by
Hardaway with 69 points.
Griffin had 63, Central 46,
Spencer 42 and Opelika was
fifth.
Griffin may have won if Keith
“Frunie” Mathis hadn’t pulled
up lame in his first 100 yard
preliminary.
The injury affected Griffin in
the 100 and 440 and 880 relays.
Coach Johnny Goodrum had
td make several last minute
changes. They hampered
Griffin’s overall effort.
Mathis had a five yard lead in
his 100 yard preliminary when
he pulled a muscle.

This is a crucial week for the
Griffin Bears, who have three
region games scheduled. All are
on the road.
Coach Bobby Gene Pierce’s
team plays at Newton today,
Newnan Wednesday and
Jonesboro Thursday.
Three wins would keep
Griffin’s title hopes alive. A
couple of losses would

The coach isn’t sure when
Mathis will be able to run again.
“There is a possibility he may
compete next Saturday in the
Westminster Relays. However,
if he isn’t fully recovered, we
won’t take a chance. We
definitely want him ready for
the region meet.”
Griffin won the two mile relay

this week
SAN DIEGO (UPI) - Andy
Messersmith, baseball’s newest
million-dollar pitcher, threw 15
minutes of batting practice for
the Atlanta Braves Sunday and
then reflected on what it was all
about.
The 30-year-old right-hander,
a 19-game winner for the Los
Angeles Dodgers last season
who had never been known as
an agitator, startled baseball
when he announced through his
agent he would test baseball’s
reserve clause by seeking free
agent status.
Last Dec. 23, he won it.
Charges began flying that
baseball was ruined — that
owners were now at the mercy.
of players would begin playing
out their options enmasse to
become free agents and negoti
ate with the club of their choice.
“I honestly feel that owners
have nothing to fear in this
regard,” said the curly-haired
Messersmith, who surrendered
his free agency Saturday by
signing a virtual “lifetime”
triple jump. Tony Hunt was
fifth.
Touchstone also scored a
third in the long jump. Ronnie
Bass placed fourth in the shot
and Chuck Hudson was sixth.
Russell Miller, Ralph Ray,
Tommy Joe Coleman and
Johnathan Nelms were fourth in
the sprint medley.
Griffin’s 440 relay was fifth.
The mile relay of Craig
Nelms, Johnathan Nelms,
Tyrone Jones and Mack
McCrary placed third and
Williams, Coleman, Kenny
Harps and Miller placed third in
the 880 relay.
Sixteen teams competed in
the Columbus Relays.
Griffin’s eighth grade track
men finished second in their
division. They were going
against ninth graders.
The Bears have won only two
games this season. Danny
Gilreath was the winning pit
cher in both of those. He pitched
a pair of shutouts, the latest a 3-
0 victory over R. E. Lee here
Friday.
contract with the Braves that
made him baseball’s second
highest paid pitcher.
“There will be some players
in the ‘superstar’ category who
may do so, but they are very
much in the minority. I took my
action to help those players who
would be regulars, but are held
back by the superstars such as
Johnny Bench and thus their
careers are hampered.”
Messersmith, who may get
his first start with the Braves
next Sunday when they meet the
Dodgers in Los Angeles, said
when the chips finally fell, it
was the people involved — and
not the money — that led him to
sign with Atlanta.
And in particular, it was a
comment by San Diego Padres’
owner Ray Kroc, the McDo
nald’s hamburger chain baron,
that convinced him.
“I wouldn’t take the guy now
at any price,” Kroc said after
Messersmith rejected the Pa
dres’ sl.l million offer — which
did not contain a no-cut
provision — early last week.
“He can work in a car wash ... it
was the most amazing display
of arrogance I’ve ever seen.”
“It would have been difficult
for me to play in San Diego after
the things Kroc said about me,”
Messersmith said. “Some
things were said about me in the
press that were not
complimentary and it upset me.

Ruthven pitches
Braves to victory
SAN DIEGO (UPI) — Dick
Ruthven is {roving he can hit as
well as pitch.
Ruthven, credited with his
first win of the season, had two
hits and three RBIs to lead the
Atlanta Braves to a 4-2 victory
over the San Diego Padres
Sunday.
Ruthven accounted for the
first two Atlanta runs in the
second inning when he singled
with the bases loaded and two
out to drive in Bill Lacy and Biff
Pocoroba.
He put Atlanta ahead 3-0 on
another single in the fourth.
But Ruthven, starting in his
first game of the season, visibly
tired and was relieved in the
sixth after giving up two walks.
“He didn’t want to come out,”
manager Dave Bistrol said.
“He didn’t even want to come in
(to the locker room) until after
the game.
“But he was tired.”
Bristol, whose club success
fully bid for the services of free
agent Andy Messersmith, said
he likes to relieve his pitchers

“I like to give my relievers
breathing room,” he said.
and decent man and he was the
first person to contact me when
I got my free agency.
“My agent and I have had
nothing but friendly and courte
ous chats during this period.
When Ted called to reopen
talks, it took me just 10 minutes
to make up my mind I was going
to sign with Atlanta.”
“He’ll never be traded,”
Turner said. “He’ll be a Brave
as long as I am... It’s for life or
until death or old age us do
part.”
Messersmith rejoins four of
his former Dodger teammates
—Jimmy Wynn, Tom Pacoriek,
Jerry Royster and Lee Lacy.
“We have four players that
are good friends of Andy’s and
they are all tickled to death,”
Turner said. “They said there’s
not a better player, and that’s
good enough for me.”
Only Jim “Catfish” Hunter of
the Yankees is paid more than
Messersmith. Hunter signed
with New York prior to the 1975
season for an estimated $3
million.

Word on Reds
‘awesome 9
By FRED DOWN
UPI Sports Writer
Awesome.
That’s the word Pete Rose
uses to describe the Cincinnati
Reds and it would be difficult to
think of a better one.
How else would you describe
a team that has won three
straight games, is averaging 11
runs per game and has two
players in its lineup batting .636
and .563, respectively?
The Reds made it three wins
in a row Sunday when they
whipped the Houston Astros, 9-
3, with Pete Rose going 4-for-6
and Joe Morgan 2-for-4. The
Reds scored a total of 33 runs in
the three games; Rose has a
.563 batting average, and
Morgan is hitting .636.
The Reds scored two runs in
the first inning on a single by
Rose, a walk to Ken Griffey, a
double by Morgan and Tony
Perez’ inxield out. They routed
Joe Niekro with a four-run burst
in the fourth inning when they
built their lead to 6-0.
The San Francisco Giants
defeated the Los Angeles
Dodgers, 6-4; the Atlanta
Braves beat the San Diego
Padres, 4-2; the Pittsburgh
Pirates topped the Philadelphia
Phillies, 8-3; the Chicago Cubs
downed the St. Louis Cardinals, *
8-5; and the Montreal Expos
nipped the New York Mets, 7-6.
Pearson wins
Rebel 500
DARLINGTON, S.C. (UPI) -
David Pearson spent much of
Sunday’s Rebel 500 stock car
race just trying to keep Buddy
Baker’s Ford in sight.
Baker’s Ford had grabbed the
lead with 255 miles gone in the
race and, except for pit stops,
had dominated the race. But
Benny Parsons spun out coming
out of the fourth turn late in the
race and the drivers had only 17
laps to go when racing resumed.
The caution allowed Pearson
to dose on Baker. Pearson
passed him with 16 miles to go
in the race and then kept his
Wood Brothers Mercury just far
enough ahead to win.
“I felt like I might could have
caught him without the caution,
but I don’t know that I would
