high on April 18. About one-third of Minot’s population, as
many as 15,000 persons, are moving out of the lower areas,
taking as much of their belongings as they can. (UPI)
Authorities say water could
flow six to 14 feet deep through
the downtown area if any of the
city’s dikes should crumble
under the surging water.
Volunteers and guardsmen
worked to shore up dikes.
A big flow of melting snow
from the Saskatchewan hills
has glutted the Souris, or
“ifieandering Mouse.” The
river is expected to crest
Saturday at seven to eight feet
above flood stage.
“You will see a horrendous
flood fight,” City Manager John
Arnold said, “and unless we’re
lucky you’ll see one ....
horrendous flood.”
“It will be an all-time
record,” an Army engineer
said.
The Minot City Council
declared evacuation mandatory
and said everyone in the flood
zones would have to leave for at
least one and possibly two
weeks.
While residents moved to
higher ground, some 450 pieces
of heavy equipment roared up
and down normally quiet streets
in a race with the rising river,
working to shore up dikes up to
15 feet high.
Engineers hope the fast-rising
earthen dikes will contain the
water.
James Ruyak, chief of
construction for the Army
Corps of engineers, said the
main dike system is about 70
per cent completed and that
work has started on secondary
dikes.
In 1969, the river rampaged
through at a record 6,200 cubic
feet per second. Arnold said this
year’s flow will be almost twice
that — 10,000 to 11,000 cubic
feet.

He told the Police Foundation’s conference on
upgrading the police that it has been difficult for officers
to recognize that with new methods they can reduce the
need to be “tough.”

$400,000 suit
filed against
Georgia doctor
VALDOSTA, Ga. (UPI) - A
U.S. District Court jury is
hearing a >400,000 damage suit
brought by a Florida woman
against a doctor and the Irwin
County Hospital on grounds she
was made sterile by two
surgical sponges left in her
abdomen.
The suit was brought by
Triscillian Terry of Belle
Glade, Fla., against Dr. Wil
liam C. Sams of Ocilla and the
hospital.
Mrs. Terry said the sponges
were left during an operation in
1968. She said they were
removed five years later by
Florida physicians but she was
now unable to bear children.
Attorneys for Sams and the
hospital conceded at least one
sponge was not removed but
they said Monday they would
prove Dr. Sams and the
hospital used accepted medical
techniques in the operation for
removal of one of the woman’s
ovaries.
They said the mistake was
due to the failure of an
accepted practice over which
the surgeon had no control.
The plaintiff’s attorneys
claimed residue from the
sponges caused “an involuntary
hysterectomy” and left Mrs.
Terry unable to bear children.

Hospital in Mineola.
A spokeswoman at the
hospital said the actor with the *
distinctive rough-cut voice died
at 8:30 p.m., some 5% hours
after being admitted in “very 4
grave condition” from the
United Presbyterian Home in
Syosset.
The spokeswoman said Ford
died of “apparently natural
causes.” The Nassau County
medical examiner’s office will •
conduct an autopsy, police said.
He starred in “A Thurber
Carnival” in 1962, following two (
years later with the lead in the
comedy “Never Too Late.”
Ford played Colonel Purdy *
for 2% years in “The Teahouse
of the August Moon” and had
five years in the role on the Phil
Silvers “Bilko” show. «
Another leading Ford role
was Mayor Shinn in “The Music
Man.” ’
The actor was once described
as sporting the “mournful mien,
complete with dangling 1
dewlaps, of a basset (hound)”
with a voice that “sounds
appropriately forlorn.”
The Baltimore-born Ford
attended Dartmouth for one
year. He began his career in .
show business by helping to put
on shows for the WPA Federal
Theatre and performed on radio
before starring in the theater *
