Flames move
their camp
ATLANTA (UPI) - The
Atlanta Flames are planning to
move their preseason training
camp from Ottawa, Ont. to
Atlanta.
David Poile, Flames assistant
general manager, said the
National Hockey League team
is making the move to improve
preseason ticket promotion and
to cut expenses.
The Flames will have a
relatively small number of
players in camp next Septem
ber and club officials have
decided transporting them be
tween Ottawa and Atlanta
would be impractical.
“It’s just not worth it,” said
Poile. “Besides, it’s getting
harder and harder to arrange
exhibition games in some of
those small towns. More and
more teams want to play in
their own buildings.”

Braves open
home stand
ATLANTA (UPI) - The
Atlanta Braves, with a new
owner, a new coach and a $1.3
million pitcher, make their 1976
home debut tonight against the
defending world champion Cin
cinnati Reds.
A crowd of 35,000 was
expected to be on hand to see
what changes have been made
by new owner Ted Turner and
new manager Dave Bristol. As
far as Turner is concerned the
major change this season will
be in the win-loss column.
“'Die Braves are it. We are
going to be a winner. I know we
are,” said Turner, a broadcast
executive who bought the
Braves earlier this year.
While past performances by
the Atlanta baseball team may
tend to damper Turner’s
optimism, at least one person
has been inspired by the new
owner’s enthusiasm — Andy
Messersmith.
Messersmith, a former 20-
game winner with the Los
Angeles Dodgers, signed a
“lifetime” contract — reported
ly for $1.3 million — with the
Braves last weekend.
Messersmith, who had ob
tained free-agent status after an
historic legal battle with major
league owners, said he inked the
Brave pact because he trusted
Turner.
Messersmith joins Carl Mor
ton, who will open against the
Reds tonight, Phil Niekro, Dick
Ruthven and Roger Moret, on
what may be the strongest
Braves pitching staff in years.
