HOW TO GROW
PRIZE
WINNING
TOMATOES
Nothing gives more fun in
growing or rewards in good
eating than your own
tomatoes. Start by choosing
a spot that receives at least 6
hours of sun daily. Spade or
till your soil • to 10 inches
deep and plan to space your
plants 3 ft. apart with rows 3
ft. apart: At each planting
spot work 3 tablespoons of
garden lime into the soil.
Choose stocky plants and
after removing the lowest set
of leaves set your plant at a
depth just above that level.
This will stimulate additional
roots along the whole stem.
Water well enough to settle
the soil around the plant but
don't fertilize yet. Give the
plant 2 weeks to become
established then come back
and work in a teaspoon of 5-
10-15 or 0-1-0 fertilizer
applied as a ring 4 inches*
out from the stem.
When you fertilize you can
also drive a 5 ft. stake 4
inches from each plant. As
the plant grows remove the
"suckers" (small sprouts
that develop between the
main stem and major side
leaf stems) and train the
plant to the stake by tying
with strips of soft cloth.
Another "staking" method
is to place a wire cage
around each plant. Keep
suckers pinched out and let
the plant grow through sides
and top of the cage. Some
varieties such as Marion,
Margloble and Rutgers are
suitable for growing without
staking But be sure to mulch
with hay or pine straw to
keep the developing fruit off
the ground and for weed
control.
Get some sevin dust or
wettable powder to keep on
hand and apply by directions
at the first sign of any holes
in the leaves or appearance
of worms or catepillars.
Continue to fertilize lightly
at 3 week intervals.
Expect about ISO pounds
tomatoes from 4 Greenlife
reccommended varieties
when you follow these
directions or up to 250 pounds
if you use the Japanese

announcement Tuesday of a
system of temporary licenses
came after “a number of
complaints” were received
about First Lady Betty Ford
obtaining a Citizens Band radio
license without any delay.
“Our phones have been
lighting up here,” Michael
McCormack, president of
American Citizen Band Radio
said Tuesday. “CB owners
resent the fact that the First
Lady can get a temporary
license and they can’t. She
should wait just as long as
everybody else.”
An FCC spokesman said the
recent temporary CB license
awarded to Mrs. Ford had
come after a request for a
waiver of the normal process
ing period, a request the FCC
grants about 100 tunes a month.
According to the commission,
new applications are coming in
at the rate of 500,000 a month,
and citizens were waiting about
seven weeks before they could
use their newly-purchased CB
sets.
Tech may help solve waste problem |
ATLANTA (UPI) - Georgia Tech,
whose engineers have designed
projects that convert solid waste into
usable energy, probably will be asked
to help plan several similar plants
proposed for California.
California state Sen. Al Alquist,
chairman of a legislative committee
considering a proposal for the waste
conversion plants, said the Georgia
school probably would be asked for
assistance because of its initial
exploration in the area.
Alquist, D-San Jose, and two other
California state senators, Bill Greene,
D-Los Angeles, and Nate Holden, D-Los
Angeles, visited the waste-conversion
project on the Georgia Tech campus
Tuesday. They were observing the
project in connection with a bill Greene
is sponsoring in the California
legislature.
The measure would appropriate
some SBOO million to construct six waste
Libya turns down hijackers
BENGHAZI, Libya (UPI) -
Libya today turned down a
desperate plea for asylum by
three Filipino gunmen holding
12 hostages at gunpoint aboard
a commandeered airliner and
ordered them to leave.
There was no immediate
word on the hijackers’ response
but they had steadfastly ig
nored earlier Libyan demands
that they leave and tried to get
officials to change their minds.
The Philippine Air Lines DCB
arrived Tuesday in Benghazi,
the fifth stop on the longest
airline hijacking odyssey in
history.

Airport said today’s decision
not to grant the Moslem
separatists refuge was final.
“We’re at a very critical
stage,” he said. “The Libyans
refused to let the hijackers
disembark. We don’twant
them. The Libyan authorities
don’t want anybody off the
plane.”
There was no word as to
where the plane might go if it
did take off.
A Philippine diplomat in

to secure the release of the

of the reasons he is sponsoring the bill is
to create more jobs.
“The benefits as it relates to jobs are
great,” Greene said at a news
conference in the Senate chamber at
the Georgia Capitol.
The Georgia Tech project uses a
method called “pyrolysis,” which
breaks down the raw material.
“Pyrolysis is what you get when you
bum toast. You get a charry material
and smoke,” said Dr. John Tatum,
principal research scientist at the Tech
Engineering Experimental Station
which devised the waste-conversion
project.
Tatum said the smoke can be
condensed into a latent oil, which either
combined with the char, or used
separately, makes a “good, clean fuel”
which can, for example, be burned in
But the government stead
fastly refused to allow anyone
to get off the plane. The
hijackers spent the night locked
inside the jet with their
hostages.
The plane arrived Tuesday
after a seven-hour flight from
Karachi, Pakistan, the fourth
refueling stop on the hopscotch
hijack that began at gunpoint in
the Philippines ors week ago
today.
Libyan officials initially or
dered the plane to refuel and
fly elsewhere.
A short time later, one of the
hijackers made an impassioned
plea for permission to stay.
“This is the hijacker spea
king,” he said. “Sir, I would
like to talk to (Libyan leader)
Col. Moammar Khadafy. Please
allow me, sir.
“We are Moslems from the
Philippines. We have come here
for a purpose. We have come a
long way to see you. I would
like to beg you sir for me to get
off the plane.”
Airport sources said the plea
was passed on to Premier
Abdel Salam Jalloud’s office in
Tripoli for consideration.
One of the hostages, PAL
Vice President Rafel Igoa,
asked a Libyan official three
times to let him off the plane
for a conference. The requests
were denied and no one was
allowed to leave the aircraft
throughout the long negotia
tions.
The hijackers began their
odyssey last Wednesday when
they commandeered a short
range PAL BACIU jet on a
domestic flight in the southern
Philippines.
They released the 70 original
passengers and two crewmen in

boilers.
Alquist said using the waste
conversion system would help meet the
nation’s energy needs and also solve the
problem of waste.
“If we keep on going, we will bury
ourselves in our own filth,” he said.
Alquist said because of Tech’s initial
exploration into the project, the
Georgia school will probably help
design the California system.
“We will look to Georgia Tech for
some help and some design and
guidelines in developing our program,”
he said. “We are going to need some
assistance in writing the design
specifications of the system.”
While in Georgia, the California
legislators visited a waste-conversion
plant, which Tech helped design, in

After refueling in Kota

Malaysia, they flew to Bang
kok, where they switched to the
longer-range DCB after replac
ing five crewmen and surren
dering their grenades.
The gunmen then flew on to
Karachi and Libya —a total
estimated hijack distance of
8,800 miles.
