Series atmosphere
Braves slug Reds, 10-5
By DAVID MOFTTT
UPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPI) — You’d
have thought the Atlanta
Braves had just won a
championship, or something.
There was a World Series
atmosphere in the Braves
dressing room Thursday night
after their 10-5 victory over the
Cincinnati Reds.
But, you’ve got to under
stand. It wasn’t so much that
they had handed the Reds their
first loss of the season. But,
rather, that it was the first
time in 13 games — dating
back to last June 17 — that the
Braves had been able to beat
the world champions.
They did it before the largest
crowd (15,716) ever to attend a
baseball game on the night
after a season home opener.
And they did it in convincing

Happiest man in the dressing
room was Ted Turner, the
advertising executive-yachts
man who purchased the Braves
last fall for sl2 million on the
installment plan.
“When you win like this, it’s
fun,” said Turner. “And, that’s
what life’s all about.”
Second happiest man was
Braves manager Dave Bristol
who just 48 hours earlier had
been bemoaning his team’s
inability to hit.
“It didn’t just happen,” said
Bristol. “We worked on hitting
for two and a half hours
Wednesday (an off day). It just
shows what I’ve been preaching
right along. There’s nothing
like hard work to produce
results.”

Jerry Royster, a former
Dodger who went O-for-14 in the
Braves first four games, had
four straight hits Thursday
night, a double and three
singles. Former White Sox Ken
Henderson had three hits and
drove in three runs. Former
Dodger Lee Lacy, who was 3-
for-14 the first four games, had
a double and a single and also
drove in three runs.
“I have no idea how it will all
turn out,” said first baseman
Darrell Evans, who, now in his
ninth season with Atlanta ranks
second only to pitcher Phil
Niekro in Braves’ seniority.
“But, win or lose, the new
attitude on this club has to
make us a better team. It runs
from the owner, through the
manager, right down through
the ranks.”
Niekro, 37 and in his 13th
season as a Brave, had his
knuckleball really jumping
Thursday night. He struck out
nine and had seven pop ups. He
gave up only three hits the first
five innings, then struggled a
bit towards the end.
But since the Braves had a
couple of seven-run leads,
Bristol let Niekro go the route
for his second win against no
losses.
“I didn’t plan to let them dig
too deep,” said Bristol. “That’s
a tough club to get out and you
can’t afford to give them* too
much leeway.”

interesting series, especially
the Sunday finale when Andy
Messersmith will make his
Braves’ pitching debut.
“I don’t know how long Andy
will go Sunday,” said Bristol.
“Five, six innings, who knows.
We’ll just have to wait and see.
I know one thing, he’s strong as
a horse. It won’t surprise me if
he does well, or if he doesn’t.”
Tommy John, making his

the mound for the Dodgers
tonight with ex-Philly Dick
Ruthven (1-0) making his
second start as a Brave.
