Theos group starts
own organization
By JOHN T. WATTS
Copley News Service
Dear John: I am writing in
regard to letters recently
received from various parts
of the country, mostly Cali
fornia, in regard to “Theos”
program for widowed.
I am no longer connected
with Theos, a marvelous
program, but the majority of
the members preferred to
start our own West Coast
organization and help our
people adjust and realize
there is still a good life ahead,
though they are widowed.
Our name is Creative life
Time, and involves creating a
new life in the NOW. It is also
Christian-oriented, and many
are finding understanding,
care and love of people and
life through this program for
widowed and divorced.
I am referring the East
Coast letters to Mrs. Bea
Decker, the founder of Theos,
and also the many California
letters.
Anyone wishing to start a
Creative life Time in Cali
fornia can contact me, or
Mrs. Decker for Theos. We
feel it doesn’t make any dif
ference which one is started
— just as long as there is a
Christian-oriented organ
ization to help.
Our program is just an ex
tension of Theos on the West
Coast, with a few changes.
Theos does not include the
divorced, or anyone over 62
years old, and we feel this
group hurts also — so we give
help, all we can, to each and
every one.
— Griffin Daily News Thursday, July 8,1976
Thank you so much for your
cooperation in our program,
so much is needed to be done.
I hope and so does Mrs.
Decker, that before long
there will be Christian
oriented organizations in
every part of our country.
The friends made and the
wonderful fellowship are a
joy to each one of us, and in
helping each other, we our
selves are helped. Your help
in this area is great. —
Roberta West
Dear Roberta: Thanks for
the news about the new
group. I am sure from the
letters I receive that many
will be interested in it.
I didn’t recall that Theos
didn’t take persons over 62.
What could be the reason for
that? It would seem those
over 62 would need the most
help.
Recent discussion of the
pros and cons of retired
persons living in a house,
apartment or whatever have
inspired the following
tabulation of what P. J. I.
considers the advantages and
disadvantages of living in a
house or apartment:
House assets — freedom to
grow things, room for visitors
or big parties, feeling of
security with familiar sur
roundings, pride of posses
sion, no rules from landlord,
no neighbors above or below,
own laundry facilities, more
walking required gives exer
cise.
House liabilities — work
and expense of upkeep, home
repairs, securing home
against intruders, work re
quired to clean large home,
loneliness.
Apartment living liabilities
— emotional adjustment in
separation from home,
sounds from other apart
ments, remembering to be
considerate of other tenants,
limiting parties to smaller
groups, getting dressed to go
to laundry room.
Apartment assets — free
dom to enjoy more activities,
friends, hobbies, less concern
of vandalism, no re
sponsibility for lawn or re
pairs, apartment services
such as delivery of car to
door, mechanics on duty,
painting services, trash
handling, less loneliness,
choice of activities, opportu
nity to choose new friends.
P. J. 1., claiming
experience in the move,
adds: “With good attitude,
the move can be exciting. But
the decision must be made
ahead of time that your
reactions will be positive.
“After the initial adjust
ment, these can be wonderful
happy years of life. As in all
areas of living, it is not.what
happens to us so much as our
reactions that cause us pain
or joy.”
