Congress overturns veto WASHINGTON (UPI) - For the 12th time in 27 tries, Congress has overturned a President Ford veto. This one was a |56.6 billion appropria tions bill for the Departments of Labor and Health, Education and Welfare, and there werd votes to spare. The bill, which Ford said was $4 billion more than he requested and therefore infla tionary, became law Thursday over the President’s objections immediately after the vote. Ford has vetoed 59 bills since taking office two years ago. Another confrontation was avoided when Ford announced later in the day that he will sign two priority Jobs bills — one establishing a $3.7 billion I TREMENDOUS CLEARANCE SALE I I AT I I Wynnes’ Jewelers I 114 North Hill Street I 3 days only • Oct. The Labor-HEW appropria tion is one of biggest to come before Congress. Ford’s veto message called it “a perfect example of the triumph of election-year politics over fiscal restraint and responsibility to the hard-pressed American taxpayer.” Congressional advocates re sponded that the bill funds programs affecting the lives and welfare of every American and that shortchanging vital social programs now would result in added costs in the long run. Republicans joined Demo crats in overturning the Labor- HEW veto by substantial margins in both chambers. The House’s 312-93 vote was 42 more than needed, while the Senate’s 67-15 vote was 12 more than the two-thirds required to overturn a presidential veto. Democratic vice presidential nominee Sen. Walter Mondale, D-Minn., was present to vote for the override. His Republi can counterpart Sen. Robert Dole, R-Kan., was absent. Two provisions in the legisla tion helped attract support for an override. One prohibits the use of federal funds to finance abortions for indigent women except to save the life of the mother, while the second exempts farms with 10 or fewer workers from Occupational Safety and Health Act covera ge. Computer fire SYDNEY, Australia (UPI) - A fire early today gutted a $52 million computer complex at the Australian Iron and Steel works at Port Kembla, 50 miles south of Sydney. A spokesman for the plant said total damage caused by the fire could reach $125 million. Police believe the fire was caused by an electrical fault. The blaze broke out only hours after 300 workers at the plant called a 24-hour strike over the death of a worker. 7- JJgj i Ik L?c<m. Mom’s house habits a sign of illness By Abigail Van Buren (?) 1976 by Chicago Tn buna N. y New* Synd. Inc. DEAR ABBY: I'm 26 and the mother of two boys, ages 3 and 5. My mother, a widow, lives about an hour’s drive from me, but I refuse to visit her again because of the condition of her house. She NEVER washes her kitchen and bathroom floors! The toilet doesn’t work, and the stench is unbearable. She has so many cats running around you can’t count them, and you can smell their urine even before you open her front door. (She burns candles to mask the odor.) I don't claim to be a perfect housekeeper, but I can't tol erate filth and germs. I'm so afraid my children will pick up something there. My oldest son refused to sit on her toilet. I cleaned up the place a year ago but she hasn't done a thing to it since. The last time we were there she wanted to give us dinner, but we lied and said we just ate. (My husband won’t even have a glass of water there!) Abby, I’ve done all I can. I feel guilty not visiting her, but I just can’t stand the way she lives. Am I wrong? ONLY DAUGHTER DEAR DAUGHTER: Yes! Your mother must be sick to live with the conditions you describe. Please pack her up immediately and take her to a doctor for a thorough physical and mental examination. She should not be living alone! DEAR ABBY: How do you tell your ex-mother-in-law who insists that you are still part of her ’’family” that you don't want to be? I hate to come right out and insult the woman, but I may have to. I have been divorced from her daughter for three years and am now married to another woman, but when ever my former mother-in-law sees me, she calls me “Son.” She keeps trying to be friendly with my present wife, tel) ing her that she is also now part of her family. This irritates me to no end, Abby. There is no religious reason for her ignoring my divorce since she is an atheist. BOTHERED IN NEW MEXICO DEAR BOTHERED: If she wants to consider you and your wife part of her “family," let her. YOU know better, but nothing will be gained by insulting her or making an issue of it. DEAR ABBY: I am a 40-year-old attractive divorcee who has been going with this 59-year-old widower for the last two years. He has five grown children and I have four. My youngest is 18, and she recently got her own apartment. I really love this man, but he says he will never marry me. He has money and he’s very generous. We’ve taken several nice trips together, and he is fun to be with. But I have the feeling his children don’t care much for me. Sometimes I think maybe I should be looking out for my future and spending my time with men who might marry me. Do you think if I go with him for another year I might be able to break him down? UNDECIDED DEAR UN: Thank your lucky stars he was honest enough to tell you he's not marriage materia). Look for a man who is. Everyone has a problem. What's yours? Suicide troubles Detroit police DETROIT (UPI) — The apparent suicide of a top Detroit police official a day after the firing of Police Chief Philip Tannian has further shaken the troubled depart ment, whose top echelon is the target of a federal drug probe. Police said Deputy Chief Reginald C. Harvel, 47, a 21- year police veteran and the department’s fourth-ranking of ficer, apparently shot himself twice in the chest with a .33- caliber police revolver, authori ties said. The cause of death was tentatively listed as suicide pending further examination. Harvel’s body was found early Wednesday at his Detroit home. The apparent suicide was another blow in a series of upheavals that have rocked the police department. Police Chief Tannian was fired by Mayor Coleman Young on Tuesday and Deputy Chief Frank Blount, the department’s second in command, who is under investigation in a federal drug probe, was relieved of his duties last week. A federal grand jury is probing allegations of drug dealing among top department officers but a taw enforcement officer close to the investigation told the Detroit Free Press Wednesday that Harvel was not considered a “target” in the case. Harvel earlier this week told the Free Press in an interview that he had been concerned about the drug probe ruining his career because he was a protege of Blount. Blount went on indefinite educational leave last week. A police spokesman said Harvel, a former undercover narcotics officer and father of three children, had been under a doctor’s care for some time and had been suffering from physical ailments, including hypertension and a bladder problem.
