Prinze charged
LOS ANGELES (UPI) — Freddie Prinze, who costars in
the television series "Chico and the Man” as a Mexican-
American mechanic, was charged Tuesday with driving
under the influence of a drug.
Prinze, 22, was stopped on the San Diego freeway by a
Highway Patrol officer Nov. 5 for allegedly driving
erratically.
The officer confiscated a bottle containing two ounces of
a liquid, later identified as methaqualone, a prescription
tranquilizer, and said a test at the Van Nuys jail showed
Prinze’s blood contained a quantity of the drug.
Take it easy!
RAMONA, Calif. (UPI) — President Ford’s youngest
son says he is encouraging his father to slow down a little
when he leaves the White House.
“He’s the kind of person that has to keep going,” Steve
Ford, 20, said Tuesday. “I would like to see him slow down
a bit.”
He confirmed that his father is considering moving to
Palm Springs, the desert resort Ford visited last week.
“Personally I think they ought to settle either in
Michigan or in California, and the nice thing about
California is that there is plenty of golf here for dad and
it’s warm for my mother.”

IjOS ANGELES (UPI) — Less may be better when it
comes to clothing Playboy magazine’s centerfold girls.
But for the Playboy Corporation’s stockholders in recent
years, less has been money.
But founder and Playboy-in-Chief Hugh M. Hefner had
some good news for them Tuesday. He reported the first
quarter of fiscal 1977 was the most profitable in the cor
poration’s history.
Profits of more than $3.7 million, compared to less than
>900,000 in the same quarter last year, which quadrupled
dividends from 10 cents to 41 cents a share, he said.
Saxbe resigns
WASHINGTON (UPI) - William B. Saxbe, a former
attorney general under Presidents Nixon and Ford, has
resigned as the U.S. ambassador to India.
President Ford, who accepted the resignation Tuesday,
appointed Saxbe to the post in February 1975.
Saxbe was controversially outspoken while attorney
general. On one occasion he branded kidnaped heiress Pa
tricia Hearst a “common criminal” before she was
charged.
Colby on probe
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (UPI) —Former CIA Director
William Colby says he does not expect the new in
vestigation into the assassination of President John
Kennedy to add anything major to the original probe.
But, Colby said, the reopening of the investigation would
not be useless because it could help settle some of the
“nagging questions” people have had since Kennedy was
assassinated 13 years ago.
"I know of no particular information that would contest
the basic decision of the Warren Commission that Mr.
(Lee Harvey) Oswald operated essentially alone,” Colby
said in an interview Tuesday.

Blazing Saddles
YONKERS, N.Y.—They sure are. The conflagration and name on the building conjures up
the days of yore when heroes of the wild west fought the wilderness to make it safe for the
pioneers, doesn’t it? But in reality Blazing Saddles turns out to be a motorcycle club at Main
st, in this suburb just North of New York, which had a fire early yesterday. (UPI)

Fingerprint pattern linked
to female heart condition
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (UPI)
— Heart specialists may
consider fingerprinting female
patients as a result of a new
report linking a peculiar
fingerprint pattern with a heart
condition prevalent among
women.
It was found that patients
with a heart valve disorder that
can cause chest pain and
irregular heart beats are much
more likely to have an arching
pattern in their fingerprints
than people free of the defect.
Dr. Mark H. Swartz, cardiolo
gist at Mount Sinai Hospital in
New York, reported the discov
ery Tuesday at the annual
meeting of the American Heart
Association. He said finger
prints may help doctors spot
people with the problem.
The disorder is called mitral
valve collapse. That means a
valve in the left portion of the
heart fails to close properly
when the heart pumps. This
allows blood to flow in the
wrong direction.
The condition is found in at
least 6 per cent of the nation’s
women, but in only half of a
per cent of men. It often
develops in the 20s and
occasionally leads to serious
complications.
The idea to look at finger
prints of patients with the
disorder was prompted by
speculation the problem is
inherited. It is known the heart
forms in the unborn child
between the third and eighth
weeks of pregnancy. It just so
happens that fingerprint pat
terns are initiated during the
same period.
Swartz speculated some gen
etic or environemtal factor
interfered with the orderly
development of the mitral valve
and, at the same time, with the

development of ridge patterns
in fingerprints.
He and his associates studied
the fingerprints of 100 patients
with mitral valve collapse and
compared the prints to those
from 100 people free of the
disorder.
They found generally rare
arch patterns in 16.8 per cent of
all fingerprint patterns of the
patients, while only 2.5 per cent
of the patterns of the compari
son group had arching.
Swartz said the condition is
difficult to treat, but some
relief of the symptoms is
obtained by drug treatment.
