Christmas parade bigger and better
The annual parade of Griffin will stir
up the holiday spirit Thursday evening
at 6:30. The parade, which originated in
1967 with 40 units when Gary Powell
was executive vice president of the
Griffin Chamber of Commerce, has
grown each year to become one of
Griffin’s largest attractions.

better.”
Smith expects 100 units in the parade;
62 have been confirmed. Last year, 65
units were confirmed; however, 97
units participated.
The parade will include local floats

than some non-filter brands, according
to a study sponsored by Reader’s
Digest.
The Digest paid for tests of 28 brands
of cigarettes, including several of the
new low-tar, low-nicotine varities.
Rather than testing for tar and nicotine
content, the study .examined the
cigarettes for their hydrogen cyanide
(HCN), nitrogen oxide (NO2) and
carbon monoxide (CO) content.
The Digest said carbon monoxide is
responsible for heart disease. It said
hydrogen cyanide and nitrogen oxide
are associated with chronic bronchitis
and emphysema.

results in its December issue, con

“The only brands consistently low in

Now King and Carlton 70,” the Digest
said.
Cigarettes low in tar and nicotine
may pose an additional hazard to
health, the magazine suggested,
because smokers may take more and
deeper puffs per day “in an effort to get
their nicotine fix." The result is also
more inhalation of the three gases the
magazine identified as harmful to
health.
The Chamber of Commerce began
planning for the parade in September.
Street restrictions, float qualifications,
and safety precautions were discussed.
The parade has no main theme. The
Chamber of Commerce feels by letting
each group design its own float, the
parade will show more originality and
float production will go smoother.

The cold front moved in today after a

The leading edge of a cold front
moved into Georgia today. The
National Weather Service issued a
travelers advisory warning of freezing
rain, sleet and snow for north and
middle Georgia.
More than two inches of rain fell in
the Griffin area this weekend.
People at the Experiment Station in
Griffin who keep tabs on rain said their
total through this morning was 2.04
inches.
Part of the total came down Friday
night when Griffin battled Peachtree at
Memorial Stadium in a state quarter
final football game.
The steady rain and drizzle was the
order of the day for most of the
weekend.
But the cold front which began to
arrive today chased the showers.
Extended forecasts indicated this
week would be a cold one with the
possibility of a warming trend
developing by Friday night.
