Blood sugar tests
can be misleading
By Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D.
DEAR DR. LAMB - Can a
person be a diabetic with a
normal fasting blood sugar
level? I have several well
meaning friends who tell me
the glucose tolerance test
doesn’t mean anything.
After a two-hour glucose
tolerance test my blood sugar
always goes high and spills
sugar in the urine. My fasting
blood sugar is always near
normal.
My last two glucose
tolerance tests were 109
fasting and 230 after a two
hour glucose tolerance test
and three months later, 110
and 218. How high does it have
to go before medication is
needed? My weight is a nor
mal 115 pounds.
DEAR READER - I hope
your well-meaning friends are
better friends than they are
doctors. Many diabetics have
normal fasting blood sugar
levels. In these patients the
challenge with glucose results
in an abnormally high and
sustained level of blood sugar.
If you mean your high levels
were present at the two hour
interval after taking glucose
you are definitely in the
diabetic group.
Terminology changes and
one can never be sure even
what another doctor means, it
has changed so often. But in a
person with an abnormal
diabetic type response to a
glucose tolerance test, the
term chemical diabetes is
sometimes used. Such in
dividuals may be entirely
asymptomatic.
Glucose tolerance tests can
be misleading unless the
patient is properly prepared.
If he avoids sweets and car
bohydrates before the ex
amination he may have a
diabetic type (starvation
diabetes) response that could
lead to an incorrect diagnosis.
How high does one’s blood
sugar have to be before begin
ning treatment? Opinions
differ but in an adult with no
symptoms or evidence of
damage most doctors prefer
not to use insulin or medicines
if the levels can be reasonably
controlled by diet. Weight
reduction helps in obese

Diluted bleach
cleans caulking
By Polly Cramer
Polly’s Problem
DEAR POLLY — I hope you or one of the readers can
tell me how to clean the caulking around my bathtub. It
looks black like it is mildewed and nothing I have used
will clean this off. — E M.
DEAR E.M. — You might try applying diluted bleach
with an old toothbrush. That should remove the mildew
and clean the caulking, too. Denatured alcohol is
another suggestion or diluted hydrogen peroxide. Good
luck! - POLLY.
DEAR POLLY — I have several Pointers to share with the
other readers. Try this before renting a steamer to remove old
wallpaper. Soak a fluffy NEW paint roller in hot water and use
it to thoroughly wet the paper. Many times this is all that
needs to be done to make the paper loose enough to scrape
right off.
To remove paint smears from windows, add household am
monia or vinegar to the hot water. Ammonia takes those putty
smears off of NEW windows, too.
Rubbing alcohol will remove that hair spray film that will
not wash off the bathroom mirror. Follow with warm water,
rinse and polish with a paper towel.
Those car shampoo gadgets that attach to the garden hose
and have rotary brushes are a work saver when washing the
outside of windows. Buy one that has a dispenser for suds and
a telescoping handle. Use mild liquid detergent suds on the
windows and sills and then rinse. Bugs and dust are flushed
away. Finish the job with a rubber blade squeegee such as
professional window cleaners use. — MRS. F.W.F.
DEAR POLLY — C.W. wanted to know how to make her
spotted jeans look better. I do not know whether or not the
following will help those particular jeans, but this is good for
making jeans look pre-washed. I fill the washer with hot water
and mix in two cups of bleach and one and a half cups of white
vinegar. Put in one or two pairs of jeans and let run through
the wash cycle. Do not let the water drain out. Stop washer
and turn back to wash cycle again. Repeat still another time,
which gives them three washes in the same water.
After the third wash cycle is completed, stop and add
detergent. Let go through full cycle again and into rinse. You
will have truly pre-washed jeans. My son’s were beautiful
when done this way, but I used warm water instead of hot,
since I did not want so much shrinkage. A store selling such
things gave me this “recipe.” — BETTY B.
patients.
When obesity is not a factor,
as may be true in your case, it
is still wise to change the diet
so that you do not get any con
centrated carbohydrates,
specifically sugar, sweets,
honey, jellies, jams, candies
and sweets that cause the
blood sugar to rise sharply.
You should use vegetables,
fruits and cereals though.
The meals should be equally
divided to avoid an overload
on your insulin production
system.
Then if you are spilling less
than 20 grams of sugar in your
urine for a 24-hour period you
are probably still doing all
right. Most doctors do not like
your blood sugar to be too high
as that leads to complications,
including vascular changes in
the eye that could lead to
blindness.
In normal kidneys glucose
starts spilling into the urine
when the blood level is around
170. If the rise above these
levels is of short duration you
don’t lose much glucose. Even
normal people may have
sugar in the urine after taking
in an extra large amount of
sweets.
Since your fasting blood
sugar is normal it is probable
that your blood sugar level is
within near normal levels
before each meal. That is
usually satisfactory.
Since you are not taking
medicines you might get some
real benefit out of exercise
which also lowers the blood
sugar. Individuals taking
medicine, though, should be
aware that exercises may
decrease their requirements
for the daily amount of
medicine.
