Miller draws
probated
sentence
Roger Miller, 47, who
operates a funeral home in
Griffin, has been sentenced to
two years on probation and two
years suspended sentence in
connection with an income tax
evasion case.
Miller pleaded guilty to tax
evasion charges on his 1971
return, according to Internal
Revenue Service.
IRS said he filed a return
showing no income and no taxes
due when he should have
reported $11,168.19 income and
taxes of $1,947.70.
Judge Albert Henderson said
a condition of Miller’s probation
was that he get his tax affairs in
order.

Mr. Crawford
Mr. John Thomas (Punch)
Crawford of 233 North Sixth
street died Saturday morning at
the Griffin-Spalding Hospital
after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Crawford was the son of
the late Gus Crawford and the
late Cora Woodward Crawford.
He was bom in Monroe County,
was a member of the Middle
Georgia Singing Association
and a member of the Pleasant
Grove Methodist Church.
His survivors include four
daughters, Mrs. Ethel Goodrum
of Griffin, Mrs. Ocie Bell
Gardner of Chicago, 111., Mrs.
Ruby Copeland of Cleveland,
Ohio and Mrs. Bernice York of
East Point; four sons, Marvin
Crawford of Tampa, Fla., Ellis
Crawford, John T. Crawford,
Jr., and Willie Crawford, all of
Trenton, N.Y.; two sisters, Mrs.
Bertha Taylor and Mrs. Sallie
Walker, both of Griffin; a
brother, Homer Crawford of
Bradenton, Fla., 28 grand
children and 48 great
grandchildren.

Mr. Cook
Mr. Nathaniel Cook of Lima,
Ohio, formerly of Spalding
County, died Sunday in Lima
He was the brother of Jessie
Cook of Griffin.
Funeral plans will be an
nounced.
Mrs. Logan
Mrs. Essie Boyd Logan of 3438
Matilda Lane, Columbus, Ga.,
died early this morning in
Columbus.
Mrs. Logan was a former
resident of Griffin and for many
years made her home on Powell
avenue. She was the widow of
Mr. C. E. Logan. Mrs. Logan
was a retired employe of Lowell
Bleachery and a member of the
First United Methoidst Church
here.
Her survivors include two
sisters, Mrs. John Pyle and
Mrs. Evelyn Goodrich, both of
Columbus; and a brother, Otis
Boyd of Jacksonville, Fla.
Funeral plans will be an
nounced by Pittman Rawls
Funeral Home.
Mr. Buchanan
Mr. John Carlton (Tot)
Buchanan, 81, of Route three,
Griffin, Mt. Gilead community
of Pike County, died unex
pectedly at his residence
Saturday morning.
Mr. Buchanan was a lifelong
resident of Pike County, son of
the late John Buchanan and the
late Lizzie Kendrick Buchanan.
He was a retired employe of
Dundee Mill No. Five and a
member of the Mt. Gilead
Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Annie Evans Buchanan;
two sons, Arthur Buchanan of
Griffin and J. C. Buchanan, Jr.,
of Woodstock; a daughter, Mrs.
Grace Gaddy of Griffin; five
grandchildren, Mrs. Joan
Robello of Atlanta, Lynn
Buchanan of Jonesboro, Mike
Buchanan, Denise Buchanan
and Mrs. Lou Ann Cardell, all
of Griffin; five great grand
children.
The funeral was conducted
this afternoon at 2 o’clock in
Haisten’s chapel. The Rev.
Clifford Chandler and the Rev.
Gene Turkett officiated and
burial was in Oak Hill
cemetery.
Mrs. Richards
Mrs. Mildred Richards of 607
Pool road, Apt. 4, Griffin, died
Saturday morning at the
Griffin-Spalding Hospital.
She is survived by two
daughters, Miss Elizabeth
Richards and Mrs. Sarah
Cheeves, both of Griffin; two
sons, Ricky Jones of Griffin and
Emory Jones of New Mexico;
nine grandchildren.
Miller’s Funeral Home will
announce arrangements.
Four hurt
in holiday
accidents
Troopers at the Griffin Post of
the Georgia State Patrol made
185 arrests during the
Thanksgiving Holiday weekend.
They patrol Spalding, Butts,
and Henry Counties.
The arrests included four for
drunk driving. Fourteen
warnings were issued.
Troopers investigated nine
accidents in which four persons
were injured.
Bryant Lamar Conner, Jr.,
30, of 228 Morris street, was
injured last night in a collision
on Bucksnort road in Butts
County.
Troopers said his auto
collided with a vehicle driven by
James Berry, 24, of High Falls
road.
Conner was taken to the
Griffin-Spalding Hospital for
treatment.
The other three injuries
occurred in a wreck Wednesday
night shortly after the holiday
count began.
Griffin Police said William
Barry McCarty, 18, of 339
Carver road, was injured in a
collision last night at South
Sixth and East College streets.
Deck Chester Whitten,
Coventry drive, Hampton, was
driving the other vehicle, police
said.
Crime report
Thieves
kept busy
in Griffin
Luther Clay Blankenship of
209 West Tinsley street has been
charged with auto theft.
Spalding Sheriff’s officers
said he was accused of taking a
1965 Dodge Coronet, owned by
Father Whitlock of 119 South
10th street.
Alton Brown, 28, of 619 East
Solomon street, was caught by
Griffin police officers at
tempting to steal a battery from
an auto during the football
game Friday night, police said.
The car was owned by Ken
neth Lewis Reid of Scales
street.
Brown was charged with theft
by taking.
George Nash, 51, of 860 East
Slaton avenue, was charged
with burglarizing the home of
his neighbor, Homer Williams,
848 East Slaton avenue.
Police said he was accused of
breaking into the Nash home
and taking three quilts and a
blanket.
A 25-inch color console
television was stolen from the
home of Eddie Potts, 428 Circus
street, police said.
Pam Sisson, 1803 Ridge
street, reported someone broke
into her car while she was in the
Parkwood Cinema. Her purse,
which contained S2B, was stolen.
The Spalding Sheriff’s
Department received a report
from James Michael Joiner of
Route Four, Pamela circle, that
an electric guitar was stolen
from his residence. The value of
the guitar and case was set at
$350.
The gym at Spalding Junior
High Unit One was burglarized.
Officials were checking to
determine what was missing
from offices there.
A pistol, CB radio and about
$25 were stolen in a burglary at
Spalding Auto Parts, 108 South
Hill street, police said.
Henry Starks, 827 Westbrooks
avenue, reported that a flexible
hose connection to a gas stove
was removed from his home.
Burglars attempted but failed
to break into the home of Terry
Creech, 1332 Morris street,
according to Griffin police.
S.A. taking
Christmas
applications
The Salvation Army today
began taking applications for
Christmas food baskets.
Applications will be taken
daily through Friday 9 a.m. till
noon and 1 p.m. till 4 p.m.
The Salvation Army
headquarters is at 419 North
13th street.
D.B. Cooper
was no-show
ARIEL, Wash. (UPI) - They
threw a beer and buffalo stew
party for D.B. Cooper, but the
guest of honor was a “no show.”
Two parachutists even made
perfect landings to get the
party, staged behind the Ariel
Store and Tavern, under way.
Ariel, in a remote wooded
area of southwestern Washing
ton, is near the spot where
Cooper parachuted from a
Northwest Airlines 727 Thanks
giving Eve, 1971 with $200,000
ransom in S2O bills. He disap
peared following the jump and
the FBI believes Cooper is dead.
