Victory over Peachtree Griffin’s biggest
Griffin has won some big
games in its history but none
were bigger or more important
than the one here last Friday
that vaulted the Bears into the
North Georgia championship
game.
The Bears won the 6-AAA
championship three times and
participated in the state
quarter-finals three of the last
four years prior to the 1975
season.
Friday’s 34-14 victory
over Peachtree advanced
Griffin beyond the quarter
finals.
Now they are one of only four
teams remaining in the state
tournament.
That’s not bad for a team that
never was rated in the top 10 by
the so-called "football experts.”
Griffin plays Wheeler of Cobb
County Friday at Northcutt
Stadium in Marietta for the,
North Georgia title and a berth
in the state finals.

(Wayne County moved into

with a 7-6 victory over

Wheeler moved into the North
Georgia championship game
with a 34-0 victory over Nor
thside of Atlanta.
Coach Corky Kell’s Wildcats
ran up 388 total yards against
the outmanned Northside
squad. Three fumbles and two
pass interceptions hurt Nor
thside.
Like Peachtree, the Wheeler
Wildcats who are 9-3, feature
the running and passing of an
excellent quarterback, Jeff
Paulk.
Griffin will throw a versatile
football team at Wheeler.
The Bears are strong of
fensively and defensively.
Griffin’s offensive line has
developed into one of the Bears’
strongest points.
Tightends Clint Hosely and
Bubba Andrews, split end
Rodney Jester, junior tackles
Kenny Hunt and Keith Barrow,
guards John Jackson, Mike
Jackson and Stewart Ogletree
and center Dee Duncan plus
blocking help from fullback
Kenny Barrow and wingback
Curtis Holmes ripped
Peachtree’s defense apart in
the second half here Friday.
Punter Bobby Vines was used
twice in the first half but his foot
wasn’t needed in the second.
Griffin scored its first four
times on offense in the second
half.
Griffin’s versatility also
showed up in the scoring.
The first TD came on a 72
yard run by tailback Russell
Miller. The second was the
result of a nine yard run by
tailback Joe Bogan.
Fullback Kenny Barrow
made the third, an eight yard
run. Tightend Clint Hosely
made the fourth on a 31 yard
pass from quarterback Craig
Nelms.
Barrow scored again on a 36
yard burst up the middle.
Ricky Williams, who leads
Oilers recover against Falcons
HOUSTON (UPI) - It took
the Houston Oilers awhile, but
they finally played as well as
their 16-year veteran quarter
back.
John Hadi, 37, a backup to
Dan Pastorini until three weeks
ago, competed 18 of 26 passes
Sunday and fired two touch
down tosses to direct Houston’s
20-14 win over the Atlanta
Falcons.
His performance was typical
of his three starts. The Oilers,
however, bumbled away close
games to Cincinnati and Pitts
burgh the last two weeks while
extending a six-game losing
streak.
“We didn’t play much better
today,’’ Hadi said following the
game. “Atlanta’s not a Pitts
burgh.”
Os his strong passing game,
he said: “I’ve been throwing
well for 15 years.”
That comment set the tone of
the Oilers’ locker room, which
for six weeks had been subdued
and out of character.
Billy Johnson, the breakaway
wide receiver who set kick
coverage teams on their ears
last season, had 169 yards
Sunday on runs, receptions and
returns and scored on a 40-yard
screen pass from Hadi.
Griffin in scoring with 12 touch
downs, did not penetrate the
Peachtree end zone. However,
he gained 59 yards to go over the
1,000 yard rushing mark.
Griffin played an exceptional
defensive game, stopping
Peachtree, a powerful offensive
team, with just 14 points.
The defense was burned
twice, once on a 44 yard pass
and the other on a 53 yard run.
Except for those two plays,
the Griffin defense dominated
Peachtree.
Griffin’s linebackers and nose
guard accounted for 27 tackles.
Barrow made 10, Bobby Willis
nine and Randolph Vaughn
eight.
Tackles Kent Head and
Danny Coker made 14 — Head
eight and Coker six.
Defensive ends Alfred
Moreland and Curtis Holmes
played an outstanding game.
Moreland was in on two sacks
and Holmes one.
Griffin’s secondary also
played a key role in the victory.
Hosely had eight tackles, Ken
Reid seven and Frank Trout
man three.
“There is, always was, and
always will be a White Shoes,”
he said.
Oilers head coach Bum
Phillips this past week got a
vote of confidence from owner
K.S. “Bud” Adams — and he
passed it on to his team.
“This team has had good
character all year, but we have
had no luck,” he said. “At this
point any win would be
satisfying. But Atlanta had
beaten a couple of good teams.
They weren’t a bunch of rinky
dinks.”
With more than two minutes
remaining to play, the Falcons
(4-8) had a first down at
Houston’s 12-yard line with a
golden chance to win the game.
Three runnings plays netted
six yards and then, on fourth
and-four at the six, substitute
quarterback Kim McQuilken
passed incomplete to Alfred
Jenkins.
“I had a chance to be a hero
and I blew it,” said McQuilken,
who replaced Scott Hunter in
the third quarter. "There was
an option on the play. I could
either throw to the back in the
flat or the wide receiver on a
post pattern. I couldn’t see the

Coach Max Dowis is shown discussing strategy with
quarterback Craig Nelms in Griffin’s 34-14 victory over
Peachtree here last Friday. Griffin plays Wheeler Friday
back. Someone obstructed my
vision. So I was forced to throw
into the endzone.”
McQuilken, a sometime start
er this season after Steve
Bartkowski was injured, per
formed well enough in driving
his team 74 yards before the
incompletion to keep Hunter on
the bench.
“I could have come back in,"
Hunter said, “but Kim was
doing a good job.”
Hunter, who had led the
Falcons to three wins in their
last four games, was sidelined
when Oilers defensive end
Elvin Bethea hit him in the
face on a pass rush. Bethea
was flagged for a personal foul.
“A second earlier and it
would have been a legal blow,”
Hunter said.
“It cost us 15 yards at the
time,” Bethea said, “but in the
end it helped us. It got the
other quarterback in.”
One play after Hunter went
out, McQuilken handed off to
Jenkins and the wide receiver
threw an interception leading to
Butler’s second field goal and a
six-point lead.
Earlier in the game, which
was played before 25,838
persons because there were
15,201 no-shows, Bubba Bean’s
49-yard halfback pass to John
Gilliam moved Atlanta to a 7-3
lead following Skip Butler’s 22-
yard field goal.
