Opponents don’t get
help from the Bears
Can Griffin continue to play
its almost flawless style foot
ball?
That question will be an
swered Friday night in Marietta
when Coach Max Dowis’ Bears
play Wheeler for the North
Georgia championship and a
berth in the State Triple-A
playoffs.
Judging from recent games,
Griffin isn’t likely to beat itself
with turnovers.

21-14 to win the Region 6-AAA
championship.
The Bears continued their
sound football last Friday with
just one first quarter fumble in
a 34-14 victory over Peachtree
in the quarter-finals of the state
triple-A playoffs.
Griffin was guilty of only one
turnover in six of its 10 regular
season games.
The Bears’ worse game, as
far as turnovers are concerned,
was the first encounter with
Peppier
How long?
ATLANTA (UPI) — The Atlanta Falcons could do worse
than have Pat Peppier as general manager — and may.
The articulate, knowledgeable Peppier has been holding
down two Falcons jobs — general manager and head
coach—since mid-October, but appears on the way out —
in both.
Owner Rankin Smith lured Peppier from Miami two
years ago in hopes the Dolphins magic would rub off on
the Atlanta franchise. But Smith tied Peppier’s hands
from the start, giving him little authority over then-head
coach Marion Campbell or in player selection.
Peppier felt from the start that Campbell, a mild-man
nered, long-time defensive coach who had been thrust into
the head job midway through the 1974 season when Smith
became disenchanted with fiery Norm Van Brocklin, was
the wrong man for the task of revving up the sputtering
Falcons.
He told Smith that last winter after Campbell struggled
through a 4-10 season and mentioned it again from time to
time. When the Falcons dropped to 1-4 this season with an
humilating, 30-0, loss at New Orleans, Peppier insisted
there had to be a change — and Smith handed the ball to
Peppier.
At that time, it all seemed clear cut. Peppier would
serve as “interim” head coach — with most of the real
coaching being done by former offensive line coach Bill
Walsh (the man Peppier had plugged as Campbell’s
successor) —for the remainder of this season, then return
to fulltime duties as general manager.
However, for reasons not fully understood by Peppier or
others, Smith began having second thoughts. Close associ
ates said Smith was hinting he would “clean house” at the
end of this season.
Peppier began talking like a lame duck.
“I don’t know where I stand regarding the general
manager’s job, my role, if any, in selecting a new head
coach, or anything else,” Peppier said Monday. “I don’t
have a contract, just a handshake. But, then, I’ve been on
a year-to-year basis all 30 years I’ve been working in
football.”
To his credit, Peppier insists he isn’t letting this in
terfere with his work.
“Some people say, ‘what’s the use if I don’t know where
I’m going,’” he said. “Some might say, ‘why do all the
work unless you are assured you’ll be around?’
“I don’t work that way, I’m not that kind of person. No
matter what the future may hold, my very nature forces
me to do the best job I can. After all, I still owe something
to the man who signs my paycheck, for as long as he
continues to sign it.”
One gets the feeling Rankin Smith plans a more active
role with the Falcons for himself, especially since he
recently was pressured into giving up his previously
primary job as chairman of the board of Life Insurance
Company of Georgia.
Falcons president Frank Wall was recently quoted as
saying “there will be a complete reorganization of the
team structure,” indicating he would either retire or take
another post in the organization.
“We’ll re-evaluate at the end of the season,” Smith said
several days ago, adding he probably would not make a
decision on a new head coach, or any other position, until
early January.
“At this time, I can’t talk to a professional coach
without being guilty of tampering,” Smith said. “And the
leading college coaches are in bowl games and don’t want
their teams upset. This is not a time to transact business.”
There have been reports of a steadily growing rift
between Smith and Peppier. But Peppier said he saw
Smith at the Falcons’ Thanksgiving party “and he was
quite cordial. He jokingly told me, T read in the papers
I’m not speaking to you.'”
LaGrange.
Griffin helped LaGrange to a
24-14 victory with three fumbles
and a pass interception.
Griffin turned the ball over
three times at Jonesboro but
won, 16-0.
Statistics show Griffin has
committed only five turnovers
in its last five games while
opponents made 15.
Griffin coaches feel it will
take another near perfect game
to beat Wheeler.

SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) - It
was a great ending to the home
season — beating the playoff
bound Minnesota Vikings — and
in some ways it might have
been the San Francisco 49ers’
best game of the year.
With Wilbur Jackson and Del
Williams running for 309 yards
between them, rookie quarter
back Scott Bull making only
one mistake in his first pro
start and the defense shutting
down Fran Tarkenton in the
final minutes, the 49ers beat
the Vikings, 20-16, Monday
night and they did it before a
national television audience.
“I never was prouder of this
team than I am right now,”
said rookie Coach Monte Clark.
“They played as good a game
as they have all year, but it
makes me wonder ... I can’t
help but think if we had been
able to run this way all season
things might have been a little
different.”
The victory gave the 49ers a
7-5 record but still left them 1%
games behind the Los Angeles
Rams in the NFC West with
two games left to play. The
Rams can clinch their fourth
straight division title with no
worse than a tie in their two
games.

Williams, who had 153 rush

wasn’t because he became the
first San Francisco player since
J. Smith in 1959 to reach the
1,000-yard plateau.
“Beating these guys was
sheer ecstasy, ” said Williams.
“It feels great to get 1,000
yards but I like to win first....”
Jackson, who had 156 yards,
scored on a two-yard smash in
the first quarter and Bull went
a yard in the second for the
San Francisco touchdowns
while Steve Mike-Mayer booted
field goals of 45 and 38 yards.
Tarkenton threw 18 yards to
Sammy White and eight to
Ahmad Rashad, and Fred Cox
booted a 37-yard field goal to
account for the Minnesota
points. Cox also had a PAT as
he passed the 1,300-point level.
Only Lou Groza and George
Blanda had scored more than
that in NFL history. ,
The San Francisco defense,
despite a half dozen injuries,
was almost spectacular, led by
Tommy Hart. They sacked
Tarkenton three times and had
Nelms, both starters a year ago,
and several other prospects
won’t be available until the
football season ends.
That could be another week or
two.
Once they join the team, it
will be a while before they are
ready to compete on the hard
wood.
Because of that, Coach Bobby
York feels Griffin fans may not
see the “real” Bears until after
the Christmas Holidays.

PHILADELPHIA (UPI) -
Philadelphia Flyers center Rick
MacLeish, suffering from mild
sprains of the left knee and
ankle, may miss Wednesday
night’s National Hockey League
game against the Minnesota
North Stars in Bloomington.
A team spokesman said
MacLeish was injured Sunday
night in the first period of
Philadelphia’s 5-3 win over the

him runing for his life most of
the game.
“We got licked good,” said
Tarkenton.
Despite his problems, Tarken
ton almost pulled the game out
in the final minute even after a
15-yard penalty for grounding
the ball had shoved the Vikings
back to their own 38. On the
next three plays Tarkenton,
who had 16 completions in 37
overall attempts, moved Min
nesota to the San Francisco 28
and with no timeouts left, he
threw out of bounds to stop the
clock with three seconds for
one more try.
On the next play, which
would have been the last of the
game, he threw a perfect strike
to Bob Grim in the end zone
but Mel Phillips got there at
the last split-second to tip the
ball away. But the officials
signaled no play because they
had called a motion penalty on
Minnesota at the snap of the
ball.
The police had the job of
trying to clear about 1,000 fans,
who had streamed out of their
seats, off the field so the last
play could be run off again.
That took five minutes and with
fans lining the sidelines and the
back of the end zone Tarkenton
threw too long and the game
was over.
Jeff Treadway will open
tonight’s game at the point.
Mark Andrews will be at center
with Calvin Dixon at the low
post. Reginald Touchstone will
be at one wing and Jerome
Garland at the other.
Besides Holmes and Nelms,
other football players Coach
York is counting on are Kenny
Barrow, J. C. Davis, Tommy
Joe Coleman, Clint Hosely and
Bubba Andrews.
The basketball action starts
today with the “B” team girls
taking the count at 4 p.m. The
“B" boys play at 5:30, the
varsity girls at 7 p.m. and the
Bears and Rams clash about
8:30.
