First
Aboriginal
governor
ADELAIDE, Australia (UPI)
— Sir Douglas Nicholls, Aus
tralia’s first aboriginal gover
nor, Wednesday began a five
year term as Governor of South
Australia.
In a ceremony at Govern
ment House, Sir Douglas,
accompanied by Lady Nicholls,
state premier Don Dunstan and
other high officials, was sworn
in by Chief Justice Dr. Alan
Bray.
Replying to the speeches of
welcome, the 69-year-old for
mer football player and boxer
said: “I am an Aborigine and I
am aware that in holding this
high office I have equal duties
to every citizen of the state,
irrespective of creed, color,
standing or age.”
Student
files suit
DAYTON, Ohio (UPI) - The
18-year-old who was handed an
empty folder instead of his high
school diploma at graduation
ceremonies last June has sued
the Bethel Township Board of
Education for $353,000.
Donald Smith was expelled
from Bethel High School last
March for smoking, but Miami
County Common Pleas Court
ordered the board to reinstate
him because he was expelled
without a due process hearing.
Smith returned to school and
completed all requirements for
a diploma, according to the
suit, but the school still refused
to give him one.
His suit, filed in U.S. District
Court, asked for $150,000 in
punitive damages and the
remainder for damages suf
fered to his wage earning
capacity and mental anguish.
Historic
place
WASHINGTON (UPI) - The
summer vacation retreat of
poet Robert Frost in Franconia,
N.H., has been placed on the
National Register of Historic
Places.
The office of Sen. John
Durkin, D-N.H., said Tuesday
the listing means the house
cannot be torn down and will be
marked as an historic place.
Frost, who died in 1963 aged
88, lived in Franconia with his
family during the summers of
1915 to 1920. The one and one
half story house is now
privately owned, but the town
of Franconia is negotiating to
purchase it
‘Jimmy’
PIAINS, Ga. (UPI) -
President-elect Jimmy Carter’s
aides and secretaries all call
him “Jimmy."
But all that will change when
they get into the White House.
"I Intend to call him Mr.
President," said press secre
tary Jody Powell.
Other Carter aides are
expected to follow suit.
Carter is expected to continue
to call himself “Jimmy Carter”
and plans to sign legislation
that way.
