STATESBORO—Thanks to
an endowment from an
anonymous donor a program
to bring distinguished
scholars to Georgia Southern
College will be established
here soon
The program will be under
the direction of Dr. James H.
Oliver, Jr., Callaway
Professor of Biology at
Southern. According to Dr
Oliver, the endowment of
$15,000 will be used to
establish the LeConte
Visiting Scholars program in
biology. “The donor wants to
encourage further ex
cellence in research and
education in biology,
especially in the areas of
entomology, parasitology
and reproduction," Dr.
Oliver added
The endowed program is
named in honor of the late
Joseph LeConte, a
prominent scientist and
educator who was born in
1823 in Liberty County,
Georgia. LeConte graduated
from Franklin College
later named the University
of Georgia—taught there and
at the College of South
Carolina, following a brief
career as a physician in
Macon, Georgia. Following
the Civil War he moved to
California where he and his
brother, John, were in
strumental in founding the
University of California. For
many years LeConte was on
the faculty at the University
of California at Berkley and
was the author of numerous
scientific books and papers.
In fact, the listing of his
scientific writings for the
period 1850-1901 fill more
than four legal-size pages
typed single space.
