Differences in
various diners
Get it right, urges our Language man, testily: A glutton is
just one who eats and drinks much too much, indiscriminately.
A gourmand is one who's excessively fond of eating and drink
ing, although not necessarily one who overdoes it, and not
necessarily one who is expert. A gourmet is a specialist who is
highly knowledgeable about food and drink, whether or not
partaking lavishly of same. And an epicure is one devoted to
the satisfaction of sensitive and discriminating tastes, most
particularly in food and drink. Watch this space for further
profoundly significant linguistic revelations. For example, the
difference between the late late TV show and a drive-in movie
is the way you spell wall-to-wall car-petting. Stuff like that.
ANTI-RABBITS
Rabbits don’t like garlic, evidently. That’s useful data to
some home gardeners. They’ve learned they can keep the rab
bits out of their lettuce, cabbage and tomato patches by spray
ing said vegetables with a pint of water into which they've
crushed several garlic cloves.
Am astonished to hear that a Japanese man can be excused
quite honorably from the military service if he is detected to
radiate too much of that simple thing called underarm odor.
The money men recently calculated that the average cost of
having a baby has jumped in the last five years from $1,600 to
$2,194.
The Duchess of Windsor has been credited with the obser
vation: ’’You can never be too thin or too rich." Client asks if
she's either. That's a judgment call. She's retired out of the
mainstream with a nurse in Paris. She's reportedly quite frail
now, exhibiting little inclination at age 82 to spend her
estimated SSO Million.

We’re

‘Little George’
Dear Sir: We would like to take this
opportunity to say thanks. The people of
Griffin and Spalding County still have a
heart as big as ever.
On August sth, we had a set of twin boys.
We lost one of them and the other one was
sent to Columbus Medical Center. After six
weeks, four in intensive care, and two in an
intermediate care nursery, he was sent
back to Griffin Hospital to stay for two
weeks. We now have “Little George”
home and he’s doing fine.
We would like to express our deepest
thanks to Dr’s. Cox, Krepps, and Smith,
Dr. Dunaway, the 3rd floor nurses and the
nursery staff. Also say thanks to the
ambulance service at the hospital and the
City Police and Fire Departments and
Grace Baptist Church, the Gospel Out
reach Mission and Haisten Brothers.
We would like to say a special thanks to
Dr. Smith, Dr. Dunaway, Dundee
Volunteer Fire Department, Central Lake
C.B’ers, and all the people that gave to the
fund to help “Little George.”
We would like to say thank you for all the
prayers that were said for our son,
because without God and the special care
given “Little George” we wouldn’t have
him today.
God bless and keep everyone of you who
so unselfishly gave to our son. We are
more grateful than words can ever say.
Thank you and may God bless you.
(Signed) Mr. and Mrs. George C. Parham,
Sr., and “Little George, Jr., 115 Elm

Note
To: “Since I am a teacher I am not
signing my name”: Since you did not sign
your name, we cannot print your letter or
even know whether you really are a
teacher. You should be answered though,
so we quote your first paragraph thus, “As
a teacher and supporter of Ray Simonton
in the Board of Education race, I couldn’t
help but wonder why his name was left out
of your ‘New Faces’ editorial in the paper.
»»
Here is why. The editorial followed the
runoff election in which Mr. Simonton was
not a candidate, having won three weeks
earlier in the original contest 5,546 to 2,581
and not having to go into the runoff. There
was no reason why his name was left out
except that. Also left out was the name of
Dr. Fielding Lindsey who won first time
around without opposition. So you see,
there was no intentional slight of anyone,
merely an unintentional omission.
Just to keep the record straight, the new
Board of Education will consist of five
members elected this month in the original
and runoff elections, plus five holdover
members whose terms will continue for
two more years. All terms are for four
years, and half the members are elected
every two years.
The newly elected members are Post
One, Dale Carley; Post Two, Fielding
Lindsey; Post Three, Russell Smith; Post
Four, Ray Simonton, and Post Five, Lin
Thompson.
The holdover members are Post Six,
Thomas Hunt; Post Seven, Yvonne
Langford; Post Eight, Mary Stinson; Post
Nine, Henry Walker, and Post Ten,
William Westmoreland.
You probably are aware of all of this, but
‘All of US ANSWER
are sinners’ Al
DEAR DR. GRAHAM: I once read in the
Bible that nothing unclean can enter
Heaven. Since Christ was the only One who
was sinless, does that mean that He is the
only One Who will be in Heaven? I am
confused. — F.S.
DEAR F.S.: Yes, the Bible does teach
that nothing sinful will be in Heaven.
Ephesians 5:5, for example, says “For this
ye know, that no whoremonger, nor un
clear person, nor covetous man, who is an
idolater, hath any inheritance in the
kingdom of Christ and of God.” You are
also right in saying that Christ was the
only sinless One Who ever lived.
The Bible says that all of us are sinners,
and we all stand condemned before God.
“For all have sinned, and come short of
the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). None of
us, no matter how good we may think we
are, can be saved on the basis of our good
works. God’s standard is perfection. If
salvation were based on our obedience to
God’s law, we would all be condemned,
because “by the works of the law shall no

Letters
The Griffin Daily News welcomes
letters to the editor and features them
on this page every Wednesday.
Here are the ground rules:
All must be signed and include the
writer’s address. We may withhold a
name upon request, but only with the
understanding that we will provide it to
anyone with a good reason for asking.
We will not withhold a name signed to
any letter critical of any individual.
Letters concerning race, creed or
religion are not acceptable. Nor are
letters for or against political can

some readers may not be.
Several times editorially we have ex
pressed pleasure that so many capable
people sought election and thus unselfishly
offered their services in one of the most
important and least compensated areas of
public affairs. Again we hereby wish all
the new members every success as they
along with the other members work
together for the education of the children
and young people of this community.
Likewise, we wish the same continued
success to the teachers, administrators,
and various employes of the system.
Good deed
Dear Sir: Recently, I was privileged to
witness an act of honesty in a little comer
grocery store which proved to me that the
cliche of “Every man for himself” cer
tainly doesn’t apply in every case.
A woman stood in the check out line with
tears running down her face. It seems that
she had cashed her weeks’ pay check in the
store earlier in the day. While I was in the
store she had returned to purchase a few
items and at that time mentioned to Mr.
Johnson, the owner, that she had lost the
entire balance of the check she had
previously cashed. When he asked her how
much exactly she had lost, she replied
$lO5. At that time Mr. Johnson held out his
hand and placed that exact amount into
her hand. He had fourid the money laying
on the floor of his store that morning where
the woman had apparently lost it.
I felt compelled to share this act of
honesty with you, especially since the
woman had no idea where she had lost the
money.
This good deed has strengthened my
belief in my fellowman and makes me
proud to be a part of a community where
such things still happen. Sincerely,

Youth football
Dear Mr. Melton: Please publish the
following letter in your “We’re Listening”
column of your paper this Wednesday if
possible. We would appreciate it very
much.
The Youth Football Program sponsored
by the Griffin-Spalding County Recreation
Department has just concluded one of the
most successful seasons in its history and
we have many people and organizations to
thank for this.
Especially do we want to say a heartfelt
flesh be justified” (Galatians 2:16).
But God loves us, in spite of our sins, and
He wants us to spend eternity with Him in
Heaven! This is why Christ came into the
world — to make salvation possible. The
Bible says that He died on the cross in our
place, and took the punishment for our
sins. “But God commendeth his love
toward us, in that, while we were yet
sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
When we accept Christ as our Lord and
Saviour, God forgives us of our sins and
adopts us as His children (Romans 8:15-
17). God gives us the righteousness of
Christ, and we are now able to enter
Heaven.
If you have never accepted Christ as
your Lord and Saviour, I urge you to do so
now. Confess your sins to Him, and ask
Him to come into your life. He has
promised to do it, and to give you eternal
life if you but trust Him. “But as many as
received him, to them gave he power to
become the sons of God, even to them that
believe on his name” (John 1:12).

“Thanks” to everyone who worked so

Youth Football Week truly an exciting

Dear Mr. Melton: On behalf of our new
organization P.W.P. here in Griffin, I
would like to say thank you for the news
coverage you have given us in the past fe .r
weeks.
Also thanks to Mayor Goldstein and
Governor Busbee for the proclamation
Nov. 21-27 as “Parents Without Partners”
Week.
We feel this is a very important
organization to parents who have lost their
partners through death or divorce. We are
sometimes treated as a fifth wheel,
therefore we tend to withdraw from the
public, and this also has an effect on the
children.
Our purpose is to be recognized as an
individual who needs encouragement and
help in raising our children.
I have found through this organization
that it is a growing through period in life
instead of going through time.
We can help each other and our children
by having discussions by professional
people, and keeping busy with activities
for the family.
Not everyone is looking for a wife or
husband. We need respect, friendship, love
and understanding which is found in
P.W.P.
Thank you for listening. (Signed) Elsie
