Mr. Evans
Mr. James Clarence Evans of
423 Dora street died
unexpectedly Saturday in
Burlington, N.C., while visiting
relatives.
He was a native of Spalding
County and was a retired
mechanic.
Mr. Evans was a veteran of
World War 11, serving in the
U.S. Navy.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Louise Marable Evans;
two daughters, Mrs. Barbara
Heritage of Bamburg, S.C., and
Mrs. Phyllis Vandling of
Burlington, N.C.; a son, J. C.
Evans, Jr., of Burlington;
mother, Mrs. Effie Evans of
Griffin; four sisters, Mrs.
Murtie Martin, Mrs. Doris
Randall and Mrs. Frances
Nelms, all of Griffin, Mrs.
Etherlyn Parham of Clemson,
5.C.,; four brothers, C. B.
Evans, and Horace Evans, both
of Griffin, Herbert Evans of
Forest Park, and Billy Evans, a
stepdaughter, Mrs. Nancy
Jones of Marietta; two
stepsons, Charles Ray Nash of
Marietta and Steve Nash of
Forest Park, nine
grandchildren.
The funeral was this
afternoon at 2:30 at Pittman-
Rawls Chapel. The Rev.
Wayman Merritt and the Rev.
J. M. Wiles officiated. Burial
was in Midway United
Methodist Church cemetery.
Pittman-Rawls Funeral

Mr. Gray
Mr. Garland K. Gray, 42, of
Villa Rica, died Sunday evening
in a Villa Rica hospital
following a brief illness.
Mr. Gray was bom in Newnan
and had made his home in
Carroll and Heard Counties for
most of his life. He was a
member of the Riverside
Baptist Church in Heard
County.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Evelyn Smith Gray; a
sister, Mrs. Mary Magdalene
Chappell of Griffin; a brother,
James Gray, Jr., of Turin;
mother, Mrs. Erma Gray of
Griffin.
The funeral will be conducted
Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock
from the Martin and Hightower
Funeral Home chapel. The Rev.
Cecil Davis and the Rev. Wayne
Webb will officiate and burial
will be in the Abilene Baptist
Church cemetery in Carroll
County.
Mr. Copeland
Mr. Ben Copeland of Man
chester, formerly of Pike
County, died this morning at the
Medical Center in Columbus.
Survivors include a brother,
Robert Copeland.
Funeral plans and other
survivors will be announced by
Union Society Funeral Home of
Concord.
Mrs. Hooper
Mrs. Viola Wilkie Hooper, 92,
of Ellis road, widow of Mr.
William Columbus Hooper, died
early Saturday night at the
Griffin-Spalding Hospital after
a short illness.
Mrs. Hooper was a native of
Forsyth County, Ga., and made
her home in Fulton and Clayton
Counties before coming to
Spalding County in 1932 to make
her home. She was a member of
the Mclntosh Baptist Church.
She is survived by four
daughters, Mrs. M. C. Huguley,
Mrs. Cleveland Jackson, Mrs.
Thomas Jester, all of Griffin
and Mrs. M. M. Brooks of
Warner Robins; two sons,
Hiram M. Hooper and Charles
M. Hooper, both of Griffin; two
sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Wallace
of Fitzgerald and Miss Lou
Genia Wilkie of Smyrna; two
brothers, Grady Wilkie of
Smyrna and Ed Wilkie of
Fayetteville; 12 grandchildren,
30 great-grandchildren and one
great-great grandchild.
The funeral was conducted
this afternoon at 3 o’clock in
Haisten’s chapel. The Rev. C.
Harold Johnston, the Rev.
Bruce Martin and the Rev.
Calvin Berry officiated. Burial
was in Oak Hill cemetery.
Haisten Funeral Home was in
charge.
Mrs. Spear
Mrs. Lizzie Spear of Concord
died Sunday afternoon at her
residence following several
months of illness.
A native of Meriwether
County, Mrs. Spear had lived
most of her life in Concord and
Pike County. She was a member
of the Mt. Calvary Baptist
Church in Concord.
Survivors include a daughter,
Miss Mamie Lee Spear of
Concord; several grand
children, nieces and nephews.
Funeral plans will be an
nounced by Union Society
Funeral Home of Concord.

Mr. Horne
Mr. Louie Dee Home, 74, of
Senoia died early Saturday
morning at the Coweta General
Hospital.
Mr. Home was a native of
Meriwether County and a
retired employe of Southern
Mills in Senoia. He was a
member of the Pleasant Hill
Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter,
Mrs. William Vessell of
lakeland, Fla.; a son, M-Sgt.:
Preston Horne, U.S. Army,
stationed in Frieburg, Ger
many; five grandchildren; a
sister, Miss Thelma Horne of
Senoia.
The funeral was conducted
this afternoon at 2 o’clock in the
Pleasant Hill Baptist Church
near Senoia. The Rev. James
Blalock and the Rev. James
Fuller officiated and burial was
in the Senoia cemetery. Haisten
Funeral Home of Griffin was in
charge of plans.
Mrs. Parker
Mrs. ElizabethMcElroy Hardy
Parker of Sunny Side, died
Sunday night at Brightmoor
Intermediate Care Home where
she had been a patient for seven
years.
She was 103 years old.
She was the widow of Mr.
Fleetwood Parker.
Mrs. Parker was a native of
Butts County and had made her
home in Spalding County 20
years.
She was a member of the
West Sunny Side
Congregational Holiness
Church.
Survivors include two sons, J.
H. Hardy and S. L. Hardy, and a
granddaughter, Miss Connie
Faye Hardy of Griffin.
The funeral will be Tuesday
at 2 p.m. at the West Sunny Side
Congregational Holiness
Church.
The Rev. Raymond
Chambers and the Rev.
Herman Hearn will officiate.
Burial will be in Oak HUI
cemetery.
The body will remain at
Pittman-Rawls Funeral Home
until carried to the church to lie
in state from 1:30 p.m. until the
funeral.
Pike School Board backs
increase in state sales tax
The Pike County Board of
Education has notified its
legislative delegation and Gov.
George Busbee that it supports
a one cent increase in the state
sales taxes for educational
purposes.
The board proposed that the
distribution of the funds be on a
per pupil basis based on
average daUy attendance.
The Pike Board of Education
offered its support of the one
cent sales tax increase after
resolving that local support of
education by the property tax
“is unfair to that class of citizen
who owns property.”
Supt. Jim Mullins said that
the state of Georgia educates
approximately one million
students and that revenue
officials estimate one cent sales
tax increase would yield about
$240-million.

CLU diploma
Ralph Gatlin was recently
honored at the National
Conferment ceremonies in
Washington, D.C., as he
received his CLU diploma along
with other agents who had
completed the required study.
Mr. Gatlin is a local agent
with State Farm Insurance
Companies. He and his wife,
Jane, were awarded an all
expense paid trip to the
conferment ceremonies by the
State Farm Insurance
Companies.
Agent Gatlin completed his
studies over a five year period
and successfully completed his
final examination this past
June.
The CLU program is
administered and directed by
the American College of Life
Underwriters in Bryn Mawr,
Pa.
Santa to visit
Boys' Clubs here
The Griffin-Spalding Boys
Club will have a Christmas
party Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the
East Griffin Club. Santa will
visit and bring food and gifts.
Hu-Sik Oh, a karate expert,
will provide the entertainment.
A group of GHS band members
will be part of the program.
One hundred and fifty
members are expected to
attend. Directors are invited.
Mrs. Vickers
Mrs. Pearl Ix>we Vickers of
Seale, Ala., wife of Marvin A.
Vickers, died Saturday morning
at Brightmoor Medical Care
Home where she and her
husband had made their home
for the past four years.
Mrs. Vickers was a member
of the Seale United Methodist
Church.
In addition to her husband she
is survived by two daughters,
Mrs. Mattie Ix>u Kellum of
Harralson and Mrs. J. T. Searcy
of Birmingham, Ala.; and
several grandchildren.
The body was carried to the
Vance Memorial Chapel in
Phenix City, Ala., and they will
announce funeral plans.

means Pike County would
receive $436,800 if such
legislation were passed. At
present, the Pike Board collects
approximately $499,000 from

Thieves on prowl
during Christmas
A large amount of household
items were taken in a burglary
at the home of Mrs. Eugene
Kelly on Ellis road.
Spalding Sheriff’s officials
said someone pried open the
rear door to enter. The missing
items included an eight track
console stereo, television, clock
radio, AM radio, stereo with two
speakers, police band radio,
tapes and records, towels and
wash cloths, and a large amount
of assorted meats. Their total
value was set at around $1,600.
Burglars used a gun to shoot
out a window and enter a cabin
on Saplo road. Tools, groceries
and three feather pillows, all
worth about $250, were missing.
James Harrison, Thrasher
road, Jonesboro, was listed as
the owner.
A 17-year-old boy and a girl,
15, were taken into custody in
Huntsville, Ala., in an auto they
allegedly had stolen in Griffin.
They were not identified. The
auto, a 1976 Toyota, was stolen
from Tom Smith’s Texaco
Service Station and was owned
by Sandy Glover of College
Park.
Two people have been
charged with a weekend
burglary at East Griffin
Elementary School.
They were identified as
Ix>nnie Cleveland Major, 19, of
Moreland street, and an 11-
year-old boy who cannot be
named because of his age.
Some SSO worth of school
supplies were taken, according
to Sheriff’s officers.
An area lookout has been
placed for a $5,000 diesel tractor
which was stolen from a
construction site at Walker’s
Mill road and Ga. 16 east.
Horace Long reported the
theft.
A motorcycle engine,
handgun and double-barreled
shotgun were stolen in a
burglary at the home of
Cleveland Allen, 823
Hallyburton street.
A color television stolen from
the home of Lucile Mays on
East Broadway was recovered
later on East Broadway, next to
Sybil Mills, police said.
Almost SBOO worth of
equipment was stolen from a
pickup truck owned by J. T.
Clower of Route seven, U.S. 19.
It included two tires and wheels,
a battery and a tool box which
contained approximately S7OO
worth of tools.
A Snapper Comet
lawnmower, valued at SI,OOO,
was stolen from the Kincaid
United Methodist Church,
according to the Spalding
County taxpayers would pay
only $52,200 or less than two
mills for school tax,” Supt.
Mullins said.
The superintendent urged
Pike citizens to write Reps.
Marvin Adams and Bill Jones
and Sen. Peter Banks and voice
an opinion on the one cent sales
tax proposal.

A thief broke open the glove
compartment of Thomas
Foster’s auto and stole a .38
caliber pistol. Police said the
car was parked at Eighth and
Solomon streets when the theft
occurred.
Bill Haisten reported the theft
of his movie camera from the
counter at Pete’s Pool Room.
Mason McDouglas, 808 Pool
road, reported the theft of a $375
radio receiver from his home.
A CB radio and bag of
clothing were stolen from a car
owned by Robert L. Cooper of
Cherokee avenue while the
vehicle was parked at
Parkwood Cinema.
Two people were charged in
separate shoplifting incidents at
Cook’s Department Store.
They were James Edward
Thomas of Thomaston, and
Mary Lee Pollox of Route
Three.
