Mint’s COPE goofs again
ST. LOUIS (UPI) - The new
money-making machine at the
Bureau of Engraving and
Printing in Washington is
having trouble coping with its
duties.
The mint’s “Currency
Operating Printing Equip
ment” first issued hundreds of
$1 bills with the serial numbers,
treasury seals and district seals
printed upside down. Then,
earlier this month, four $5 bills.
Tuesday, Barry Faintich, co
owner of Midwest Money Co.,
bought a dollar bill with no
serial numbers, treasury seal or
district seal on the front of the
bill. Instead, the numbers and
seals were printed on the back
of the bill.
“The bills are printed in
sheets of 16 so there must be 15
others like this one,” said
Faintich, who bought his funny
dollar from a St. Ixjuis bank
teller for S4OO. “I heard some
others turned up last week in
Richmond, Va."
He said the mistake occurred
when the sheet was inserted
with the wrong side up for the
third printing process, in which
the numbers and seals are
added.
“This is the biggest rash of
currency errors in the history of
the BEP, and that goes back to

ST. LOUIS—COPE, the newest printing equipment at the Bureau of Engraving and Prin
ting in Washington, has goofed again. Barry Faintich, co-owner of Midwest Money Co.,
bought this dollar bill yesterday with no serial numbers, treasury seal or district seal on the
front of the bill. Instead, the numbers and seals were printed on the back of the bill. Months
ago an error by COPE, which stands for “currency operating printing equipment,” resulted
in hundreds of $1 bills with the serial numbers, treasury seals and district seals printed
upside down. Earlier this month, four $5 bills with similar errors popped up. “The bills are
printed in sheets of 16 so there must be 15 others like this one,” said Faintich, who bought his

Faintich said the number of
recent printing errors do not
detract from the value of the
messed-up money.
“We’re not talking about a
great mintage error,” he said.
“The bills containing errors still
are scarce items."
Ford
rejects
routes
WASHINGTON (UPI) - The
Civil Aeronautics Board says
President Ford rejected for
“foreign policy reasons’* its
proposed changes in overseas
routes of major U.S. airlines.
The CAB announced Tuesday
that Ford decided Friday to
overrule its approval of the
plan. The board had no
comment.
At the same time, Ford
approved a CAB decision
extending the authority of
supplementary airlines to pro
vide charter and cargo service
to new foreign points.
The announcement said the
President explained he was
rejecting the board's decision in
the Transatlantic Route Pro
ceeding because some freign
governments are “presently
dissatisfied*' with bilateral
agreements governing interna
tional air travel.
The CAB decision would have
provided flights to Europe from
many U.S. cities that now lack
direct overseas service. Pan
American World Airways and
Trans World Airlines opposed
much of the decision granting
routes to competing airlines.
The decision would have
transferred Pan Am’s authority
to serve Norway, Sweden,
Finland and Iceland to North
west Airlines. Pan Am would
continue to serve Denmark and
Northwest would be barred
from flying there.

ATLANTA (UPI) — Delta Airlines officials expect a
“considerable additional delay" after learning President
Ford had returned to the Civil Aeronautics Board the
company’s application for nonstop service between
Atlanta and London.
The CAB had recommended last July that Delta be
certified to operate nonstop flight between Atlanta and
London plus certain other flights. The CAB also recom
mended other carriers for primary Texas-London nonstop
rights, in addition to nonstop New Orleans-Tampa-London.
Ford asked the CAB to take another look at its decision
in view of a new international aviation policy adopted
after the recommendation was approved, Delta said.
Trial for girl
BLAIRSVILLE, Ga. (UPI) — Union County officials
say they have not yet decided whether to try as an adult a
15-year-old girl suspected of participating in the slaying of
her father-in-law on Nov. 30.
Debbie Hedgecock and her 19-year-old husband have
been charged with the murder of Oscar Hedgecock, 49,
whose body was found near his home on Dec. 4.
She was confined to the Regional Youth Development
Center in Gainesville. Her husband, Michael Hedgecock
was being held in the Towns Union Jail Tuesday night.
They were returned from Greenville, S.C., where they
were arrested Sunday, said R.C. McCracken of the
Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Hedgecock’s father was last seen near his home on Nov.
30. His bound and gagged body was discovered face down
on Dec. 4 near his home.
Hedgecock had suffered multiple stab wounds in the
chest, McCracken said.
Suspect nabbed
ATLANTA (UPI) — Atlanta police said a “fast
thinking” bank teller helped them catch a robbery suspect
Tuesday after the man opened a money bag which also
contained red dye.
A spokesman for the police department said John
Gaillie, 25, was captured in a wooded area near a chur
chyard a few blocks from the site of the midmoming
robbery.
Gaillie allegedly dropped a bag containing an
unreported amount of money when a red dye bomb placed
inside the sack by the teller exploded as he fled, police
said.
