Yesterday’s stars today
‘Mean old Lady’
debuted as teen
By NANCY ANDERSON
Copley News Service
HOLLYWOOD - “I think
I’ll write Margaret Hamilton
and tell her I’m playing her
this year,” Jane Kean
laughed.
“I’ve never played such a
mean old lady before, but in
‘Pete’s Dragon,’ I’m a char
acter like Margaret Hamilton
in ‘The Wizard of Oz.’
“It’s quite a departure for
me.”
“Pete’s Dragon” is a new
musical fantasy from Walt
Disney Productions which
combines animation with the
action of live performers in
cluding Helen Reddy, Red
Buttons, Mickey Rooney,
Shelley Winters and Kean,
cast as a stern, turn-of-the
century teacher.
Previously Kean has large
ly specialized in comedy,
probably winning widest pub
lic acceptance as Art Car
ney’s wife, Trixie, in Jackie
Gleason’s “The Honey
mooners.”
A performer most of her
life, Jane made her Broad
way debut as a teen-ager in
1943 in “Early to Bed.”
She also appeared on
Broadway in “Call Me Mis
ter,” in which she replaced
Betty Garrett; in “Will Suc
cess Spoil Rock Hunter?” in
which she replaced Jayne
Mansfield; and in “Along
Fifth Avenue” with Jackie
Gleason.
As a matter of fact, she’d
amassed an enormous list of
credits on stage, screen and
in television before she de
cided to settle in Florida
where she met a club manag
er named Joe Hecht to whom
she’s happily married and
who she’s lured into perform
ing.
When Jane met Joe, he was
managing the Racquet Club
in Miami, and she was play
ing club and theater dates all
over the place, “coasting,” as
she called it, “on the Jackie
Gleason show."
Because of Jane’s sched
ule, Hecht was able to see her
only by flying to 11 cities
within a year.
“He had jet lag all the
time,” his now-wife declares.
So he gave up club manage
ment, and, after a short
(llayton Jr. College
gets nursing grant
MORROW - A $30,525 grant
to support the nursing
education program at
Clayton Junior College has
been awarded by the
Department of Health,
Education and Welfare
Dr. O.C. Lam 111, Chair
man of the Division of
Natural Sciences and
Mathematics under which
the Department of Nursing
operates at the Morrow
institution, received
notification of the grant from
Jessie M Scott, Assistant
Surgeon General and
while, became Jane’s man
ager and her occasional co
star.
“We worked together all of
last year in Las Vegas,” Jane
relates. "I’d gone to Las
Vegas to do ‘The Mind With
the Dirty Man’ for four weeks
at the Union Plaza, but it was
such a success we stayed for
a year thus setting a record,
because no other straight
play had ever done well
there.
"Joe wasn’t in the original
cast, but he was over visiting
me when a man dropped out
of the show, and we didn’t
have to twist his arm to get
him to step in.
“We like working together
so well that we’ll do it when
ever we can.”
Because of her musical
comedy and otherwise
comedic background, Jane
was afraid the Disney organi
zation would think she was
“too jazzy” for the stern
schoolteacher role in "Pete’s
Dragon.”
But she was cast without
even reading for the part.
Naturally she’s delighted to
be in the picture, though she
confesses, “Movie making
isn’t as exciting as stage
work, because you don’t get
an immediate feeling about
what you’ve done.
“By the time a picture I’m
in comes out, I’m wondering,
‘Did I really and truly do
that?’"
Because, she says, there’s
a shortage of nightclubs,
Jane’s been offering her act
on “the condominium cir
cuit.”
“These big Florida condo
minium complexes have
thousands of residents,” she
points out, “and some have
beautiful theaters to go with
the built-in audience.”
Jane also draws well at
fairs, “because people who go
to fairs love television per
sonalities,” but, she deplores,
“fairs are terrible to play, be
cause there’s always a wide
racetrack between the audi
ence and the stage.”
Kean likes doing television
and would like to appear
regularly in another situation
comedy.
"I don’t know what the hell
that is,” she says, “but I’d
like to do one.”
