Female sheriff
Kathy Crumbley, Moot and 275 pounds, walks down the main street of Saint Clairsville after
being sworn in Sheriff of Belmont County. Kathy who had been a deputy sheriff before her
election feels that her size and the .35 magnum that she carries should be enough to fight
criminals. She is one of only three female sheriffs in the country. (UPI)

110 S. sth Street Griffin, Ga.
action suit has been filed in
federal court against the
General Electric and Monsanto
Co. in connection with the
alleged pollution of the Coosa
River by PCBs.
The suit, possibly the largest
such action in Alabama history,
was filed Wednesday. It
charges that the release of
PCBs into the Coosa River
from a transformer manufac
turing plant in Rome, Ga., has
damaged business and pleasure
activities in Alabama.
U.S. District Court Judge
James H. Hancock will hear
the case in which about
3,000 persons in Georgia and
Alabama who depend on the
Coosa for their livelihood are
named as the plaintiff class.
The suit alleges that General
Electric dumped the PCBs into
the Coosa River from its plant
with the knowledge that the
thick, oily chemical was harm
ful to various water life.
Commercial fishing on the
Coosa River from Rome to the
Alabama border has been
banned by Georgia authorities
and a similar suit seeking 5500
million in damages has been
filed in that state.
A warning against the con
sumption of fish taken from the
Coosa River and its tributaries
was issued last November by
the Alabama Water Improve
ment Commission.
Pyranol, which is produced
soley by Monsanto, is the main
chemical in the PCBs that are
used as heat transfer agents in
transformers. Monsanto sells
pyranol to General Electric
and, for that reason, was
named as a codefendant in the
suit.
Environmental Protection
Agency tests have revealed
PCBs are cancer-causing
agents in laboratory mice.
Concentrations of PCBs deter
mined by the Federal Food and
Drug Administration to be
unsafe have been found in fish
taken from the Coosa River as
far south as Weiss Lake near
Cedar Bluff.
General Electric officials said
runoff of the chemical into the
river has been halted and the
use of PCBs will end by late
spring.
Citizens urged
to shiver
in cold
CHICAGO (UPI) - As if
anyone could help it when the
mercury dives below zero, the
city’s health commissioner is
encouraging people to shiver.
As Arctic air settled over the
city and turned people into
walking ice cubes, City Health
Commissioner Dr. Murray
Brown explained Wednesday
that “shivering is you body’s
way of releasing heat to your
muscles.”
Brown said feet are particu
larly vulnerable to the cold, so
pacing, rocking back and forth
on the heels and wiggling the
toes are all good winter
exercises.
And, he added, although
obese people don’t feel the cold
as much as thin ones, they
can’t shiver as much and are
more susceptible to frost bite.
With Thursday’s high expect
ed to reach a balmy three
below zero in Chicago, Brown
advised against running into
the local tavern for a nip or
two. Contrary to popular belief,
he said, liquor doesn’t warm
people up and, in fact, tends to
increase heat loss in the skin —
making people feel colder.
Let women
shovel snow
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (UPI)
— It’s safer for some middle
aged women to shovel snow
than men because many women
are in better physical condition
from doing housework than
their husbands who have white
collar jobs, according to Dr.
Michael Sharon.
Sharon, of the Connecticut
State Medical Society, said
Wednesday snow shoveling can
pose risks to men because the
incidence of coronary attacks is
higher in middle-aged men than
women.
Still, he said, snow shoveling
can be a healthy, invigorating
exercise as long as you observe
a few precautions.
If you are obese, hyperten
sive, or have angina pectoris,
it’s better not to shovel snow at
all.
If you are going to shovel
snow, you should do some
warm up exercises first or take
a brisk walk since this can
prevent back and shoulder
strain.
Sharon said you should take
your time shoveling snow.
Shovel in a relaxed, leisurely
manner and rest frequently.
Even snow blowers have their
health hazards. Sharon said
severe hand injuries are
commonplace in every hospital
emergency room after major
snow storms.
One-legged
watchman
foils holdup
NEW YORK (UPI) - A one
legged watchman used his
crutch to foil a holdup and then
shot the two would-be robbers
with their own weapon.
Police said the watchman, 56-
year-old Harold Peterson of
New York, was confronted
Wednesday night by two men at
the Brooklyn used car lot where
he works.
When the pair demanded
money, Peterson, who has only
one leg, swung his crutch at the
startled gunman and knocked
the weapon from his hand.
The watchman grabbed the
gun and fired two shots,
wounding one man in the mouth
and the other in the hand.
Then he called police.
The men, Anthony Modoffone,
20, and Julio Torres, 24, both of
Brooklyn, were taken to a
nearby hospital, where Modof
fone was listed in serious
condition.

costar of the “Sanford and Son” television series, took out
a license Wednesday to marry Yun Chi Chung, 34, a native
of Korea.
The marriage plans were not announced. It will be the

PITTSBURGH (UPI) — Ailing former United Mine
Workers president W.A. “Tony” Boyle, convicted of or
dering the 1969 Yablonski murders, said he is not pam
pered at Western Penitentiary nor is he addicted to any
drug.
Boyle, 75, who receives about six daily injections of a
synthetic morphine, said in an interview with the Pitt

stop it overnight, if they find something else for the pain.”
Madame sheriff
SAINTCLAIRSVILLE, Ohio (UPI) - Kathy Crumbley,
who has been receiving widespread publicity lately, was
sworn in Wednesday as Belmont County sheriff before a
small crowd that gathered in the county courthouse.
The Moot 275-pound former deputy sheriff, who
becomes one of the first woman sheriffs in the country,
said her election “represents a victory for women in law
enforcement.”
Miss Lillian"
AMERICUS, GA. (UPI) - “Miss Lillian" Carter
remains in satisfactory condition at Americus-Sumter
County Hospital, where she is recuperating from a leg
ailment.
The president-elect’s mother was admitted to the
hospital a week ago when she suffered a muscular spasm
in her left leg. She is undergoing physiotherapy and is not
expected to go home until Monday.
Riegel appointed
LANSING, Mich. (UPI) — Donald Riegle, an outspoken
opponent of the congressional seniority system, has
become Michigan’s junior U.S. senator, five days ahead of
schedule, in a move calculated to give the freshman
Democrat more clout on Capitol Hill.
Republican Gov. William G. Milliken on Wednesday
appointed Riegle to the Senate vacancy created Sunday
by the death of Philip A. Hart, saying the added seniority
could give Riegle an edge in winning important com
mittee assignments.

‘Bubble-gum bandits"
halt traffic
LENINGRAD, U.S.S.R.
(UPI) — Along a lonely stretch
of road in a wooded area near
the Finnish border modern-day
highwaymen lurk behind the
trees — but these bandits are
more interested in bubble gum
than gold.
According to Western di
plomats who travel often by car
to nearby Finland, Soviet teen
age “bubble gum bandits” are
trying to force Western cars to
stop by scrambling out of the
woods and standing in the
middle of the road.
“There have been a number
of instances where up to six
youths in a gang line across the
road and dare you to run them
down,” one diplomat said
Wednesday.
“If you do slow down, they

usually ask for gum or other
Western items."
Diplomats said the incidents
occur about 85 miles northwest
of Leningrad on a deserted
stretch of road lined only with
trees.
“We have dubbed them
bubble gum bandits,” a di
plomat said. “The first time you
run into them you are surprised
because you don’t know what
they are going to do. The best
thing is to keep on driving and
hope they will get out of the
way.”
The diplomats said that if a
foreigner slows down, members
of the gang run up to his car and
start banging on the windows
and the fenders. “That’s when
you put on the gas,” said one.
